True, but it's not the break out that you said was coming. The Collingwood games happen maybe 2-3 times a year. Sure, anyone playing for a top 4 team is going to be a contributor but I think it's been another underwhelming season thus far despite all the Brisbane fans coming out in droves post the Collingwood game.

Let's sum it up post finals, that is what will matter most. If you isolate Rayner's games forward, 17 goals + assists in about 7 matches and 15 Sherrins and over 6 contested is pretty tidy.

How about 2.3 goal + goal assists. Or 2.5 if you take out the game that he was knocked out and subbed out in the first quarter. :)

Nice try Dan, but Spargo is getting under 2 contested Sherrins per match, an AFL all time low. His tackles, pressure acts, possessions, offensive 1 v 1's are all spew worthy returns. He has shown a huge improvement in one key area you really value though, Joe the Goose receives. So you must be delighted. :)

Nice try. You're changing the narrative. You said Spargo would be dreaming to average 1 goal per game OR 1.8 goal assists. Yet here he is smashing both. It's okay mate :)

Now back on to Rayner.

6 game sample Danster. But ok, if he gets through a whole season averaging his current goals + goal assists his dreams will have come true. The trouble is those numbers attached to under 2 contested possessions per match is not sustainable, or if it is sustainable, then just about every player in the competition could achieve what Spargo is achieving if they were in his position ie. receiving joe the goose shots at goal for a living. ;)

Stats are almost exactly the same this year as last, which is surprising given the expectation that he was primed for a break out year, 2nd year back after a reco.

May never get to the level you hope a pick 1 would get to, but don't think the Lions will be complaining about that particular draft. Even if Rayner gives no further improvement, they got 3 other players who will be critical to their prospects of winning a flag this year and in the near future.

Hey danster168, just wondering how you rated Rayner’s performance last night (asking for a friend) ;)
Just wondering how you've rated Rayners performances since the Collingwood game (asking for a friend). Hell even before the Collingwood game. Why can't we all just settle on Rayner being a so-so player. Melbourne had a player similar to him and that was Colin Sylvia (RIP). He had multiple seasons where he averaged 20 touches a game though and still had big games like 37 touches and 4 goals versus the hawks.

Not a good, or fair, comparison. Sylvia had no work ethic. Would show up in the preseason out of shape (did this at the dockers too). Rayner is different, in attributes and application.

I agree regarding Sylvia's work ethic. but at the age that Rayner is now, Sylvia was averaging 22.3 disposals and 6.8 marks and 1 goal a game. So despite having poor work ethic he was still more consistent than Rayner's current output.

I am worried about Rayner come finals time - him and Daniel Rich. I know others are flying for the Lions at the moment but those two can absolutely kill you when playing well.

Regards

S. Pete

First of all, RIP Colin Sylvia and wished he was still around.

Regarding Rayner though, he’s just playing his role in the team at the moment. Would I like him to play a more dominant role in our side (YES) but if the team’s winning, that’s the main thing I suppose and Rayner can continue playing that 15 disposal, 1 goal a game.

Glad both clubs are in the Top 4 though, which is always refreshing to see 👍

Haha? Danster wouldn't waste his time in a thread, only to be proven wrong mate...
As you were saying? Another season rolls on by and another season of 14-15 touches and 1 goal a game. In a top 4 side. How is he going to take his game to any good levels? Is it a fitness issue? or just talent? Having a knack of finding the ball is included in talent.

Thought he'd elevate his game this season but another lackluster affair.
Looks like he may have reached his ceiling as a player.

West Coast next week, perfect opportunity for Cam to turn it on against the bottom dwellers.
Could be a lesson for West Coast, Harley Reid might be a better player than Rayner, but Rayner was compared Dustin Martin & imo they don't play alike at all.

Sylvia had top 5 in the competition kind of talent.

Rayner, in spite of his draft position, does not.

You two have not watched much of him this year and are looking at the stat sheet and coming to a conclusion and it shows. His impact has been unquestionable.

Stats do not always paint a good picture fellas.

Martin is more skilful and creative than Rayner. But there are definitely some similarities in terms of ability to break out of tackles and create space.

I'd say Rayner is more of a Jamie Elliot type but with better skills and creativity.

I'm not saying he plays like him. But rayner is a strong lad with a burst of speed (similar to dusty). Core strength off the charts. Just can't capitalise or maintain his efforts. "If" it clicks for him then watch out. But it's looking less likely every game.

Rayner would need to step up a few levels to clean Jamie's boots. Ridiculous comment.

How's it a ridiculous comment? I'm saying they are a similar type of player as they have similar attributes. Elliot has clearly done more in his career as he's been around a lot longer.
