Rayner was fantastic tonight back in his third tall role. Just got highlighted on Fox. 2 goals, six score involvements and left a heap of Pies players hurt as he smashed contests. Third tall is his role, watch him flourish come finals!

Thought he was great tonight, once again he plays his best footy when we're two tall and he acts a pressure high forward that can pinch hit in the middle.

He won't ever be a 30 touch player but he is a solid line breaker around the contest and a decent hit up forward.

If get gets his 13-16 touches, gets a goal or two and some decent score involvements, job done for me.

Lucky footy isn't played on paper because he'd look very average.
Mason Cox had a huge impact on the game last night and the commentators looked at his stats and he had 2 touches.

Yeah when I saw that I yelled out BUMP HIM and cheered when he did, then to get the ball back and kick the goal was huge.

But taking out Murphy - the softest hardman I can recall was brilliant.
Murphy is such a serial flopper and stager, that it's so hard to work out whether he's actually hurt, and whether anyone actually hit him.

I preferred this:

I noticed with Rayner last night with that goal (and another one from one of their other small forwards), is that they ran towards the goal when they had the ball in the F50. It caught the defenders off guard and created goals.

Most small forwards retreat backwards when they get the ball in order to give themselves space before having a shot at goal. Defenders anticipate that retreat and react accordingly. They will usually corral the player with the ball as they retreat.

In that clip, Rayner instead bursts towards the goal in order to find the space he needed to get a shot off - and it caught the defenders off guard. They weren't expecting it.

Good pickup. Fletcher I think was the other. Caught them all by surprise

One thing that has become clear with Rayner is he needs to work on his first touch. He seems to hit the sherrin at pace but fumbles the ball so often. If he can fix this his game will improve majorly. He needs to spend a pre season with Lachie to get his hands sorted.

Cam is a footballer, not an athlete. Can struggle with the full ground press running requirements.

However he is tough as teak, powerful, smart, an excellent kick on both sides, strong hands and can jump on heads.
He can and does make things out of nothing and brings other players into it with his quick hands, selflessness and generally good decision making.

The ACL obviously has set him back but I have no doubt he will become a topliner in the next few seasons.
