Collingwood is likely to fine Cameron Cloke after the young ruckman was found to have been in a Ringwood nightclub at 5am on Sunday when a patron was savagely beaten.

According to police and the Magpies, Cloke has been cleared of any involvement in the incident, after which the victim, a male in his 20s who remains in a serious but stable condition, was admitted to the intensive care unit of Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Police investigating the bashing yesterday spoke with Collingwood and assured the club that the 20-year-old was not implicated, but the Magpies are unhappy that the second of the three Cloke brothers on their list was out at such an hour and intend to discipline him.

"The police contacted us today but, as it was explained to us, Cameron isn't and won't be the subject of any inquiry," chief executive Greg Swann said last night. "It seems that he just happened to be there when this fight or incident occurred.

"According to the police, basically, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The police are apparently looking for some bloke who whacked some bloke who ended up in a coma, but we've been assured Cameron had nothing to do with it. From our understanding, the bloke in question isn't even known to Cameron."

Police spokesman David Fitzgerald said the fight started inside the nightclub and then spilled out onto the street. "We believe an unknown offender has struck the victim once to the face. He has then fallen backwards and hit his head on the kerb or pavement," Senior Constable Fitzgerald said.

"Cloke is not part of the investigation. I wouldn't even say he is assisting police with inquiries. He's just not part of the investigation."

Swann dismissed suggestions that the victim was beaten by a friend of Cloke's and described the idea that it could have been a "minder" of the player as "absolutely ridiculous". "We're confident Cameron wasn't involved . . . But we'll be doing something internally about the fact that he was out at 5am," he said.

Cloke could not be contacted last night. "He's not available," said Cloke's father, David, adding his son did not know the injured man.

In May last year, Cloke had his driver's licence cancelled for six months and was fined $360 after being clocked at 144 km/h

Such a crime, isnt it. Still, he broke a team rule.

If this wasnt a Cloke - or any other 'name' player - no one would even know about it.

would anyone else cope with being told what you can and cant do once your working hours are up.
with more and more players getting fined by their clubs for "being out past curfew" i would expect to see this become a major issue, with the players association getting involved sooner rather than later.
certain nights can obviously be controlled (night before a game or an early morning training session) but surely players can be granted one night at least where the club has no say in what they do as long as they stay within the law.

Its an iffy one, but I suppose its a matter of following team orders. The whole fines thing is a bit vague to me and I'm unsure how a club can enforce a fine on a player. Presumably in a situation like this, the club has backing from the players association and the AFL, otherwise the player could well be in a situation where he refuses to pay the fine and the club is able to do anything about it.

However, one trump card the club will always have up its sleeve is the control of who takes the field on any given weekend. That is a pretty powerful motivator to straighten up & fly right and if young Cameron has that put to him, my feeling is he'll snap-to pretty damn quick!

WTF? why can't he be out at 5am on a SUNDAY nite?? the game is well and truely over, and if he shows up on time to training or recovery whenver it is, what is the big problem?

People on this same board complained about the Dockers commitment when they were seen at the airport eating fast food after their loss, even though all teams players have been seen doing the exact same thing.

I assume Cameron Clokes committment to his team and game is at question here, only he knows that answer,

Do they let donkeys into nightclubs these days.

Hilarious.

5am! Was he there having breakfast!
Dad David really shouldn't speak. He just makes things worse. Stating his Son is a name player is ridiculous. Any AFL player in a nightclub until 5am during the season would have the finger pointed at them. Particualarly from a team that's struggling. There aren't any unknown Players anymore, what is this idiot talking about. Cam is a chip off the old block!
I'm sure we'll be hearing more tales of stupidity from both of them in the future.

Strange that the police are now informing people they weren't involved in crimes.

I'm expecting a phone call this morning to confirm I'm not part of a drug syndicate in Bali or a stabbing overnight in Sydney (I presume there was one).

Did they inform you that you weren't involved in Gehrig's p1ssing on a female incident

Remember these guys are paid a ******** load of money, more than most of us will see in about 5 years of our lives. There is too much at stake for players to be out at 5 am - too many risks especially in an environment with alcohol and wannabe heroes wanting to knock the tall poppy afl players down a rung or two.

During the off season, sure let the boys do what they want, but during the season, it's pretty foolish being out that late.

The media are always hanging out for more. They were hoping Cloke was involved with the crime that night. It's kind of like what happened with Norman's latest indiscretion. Although he only had an arguement with his girlfriend, the media were suggesting straight away that he bashed her face in.

LOL - typical, try and make this about St Kilda.

Collingwood's off-field record is second to none. How's those assault charges coming along?

I'm led to believe it's club culture. You can take the club out of Collingwood . . . you know the rest. :)
