They won't pay overs. They need points for their academy kids as well. They won't give those points away.
They already have heaps of points and with picks coming in from Marchbank, WHE, Steele etc they are only going to have more points. Some picks may be for next year but they will have plenty of points anyway. Can definately see them paying overs if they are desperate for McGrath.

3 & 5 will be gone before anyone bids.
which is why i think they come after 1 (to get McGrath), then load up on a couple of late picks from us for 3 & 5.
1, Hibberd pick, EFC 4th rd for example.

We will get pick 5 from Carlton for Marchbank and maybe throw in Pickett and Stewart. We will then trade pick 3&5 to Essendon for pick 1.Its all about a replacement for Heath Shaw in 1ir 2years which is McGrath .Mcgrath + his leadership potential is what we want.Quality over quantity with our list reductions
No need to trade, because according to landsberger essendon will bid on setterfield . We don't match it and after Brisbanes pick we take one of Ainsworth, McGrath or McLuggage.

Landsberger is a fool, reckon we will definitely bid on Bowes and have said that for weeks but think we are zero chance of bidding on Setterfield

Interesting development, Hagdorn normally is clueless but he does get a lot of his info from McCarthy's manager, Colin Young. A spanner in the works of the Hill deal if true.

Oh Crumpet Face you've done it again

Why the hell would pick 71 be in the trade. It was overs before 71 was included but that just seems a very strange addition to the deal.

Word is he wants to play in Vic

Not sure how correct this is
heard that too.
Gotta be the reason Freo let 3 go. SPS would be great, but if he's keen on Melbourne or his club of support, Freo had to think the risk not worth it.
if we trade into 3 and 5, i have to admit, missing McCluggage but getting 2 of SPS, Brodie, Taranto, Ainsworth. Offer that to any team 12 weeks ago and they'd sell you the keys to the club.

Given the only sides with a top 10 pick are essendon, carl, richmond and st kilda that melb option is looking very unlikely

Especially since richmond and carlton look like trading their picks to an interstate side

Fair enough, if you are being serious, but i would think gws need that pick more for their academy kids.

Then again i have no idea ;)

They've still got picks coming in for Steele, Marchbank, WHE & Pickett.

Bet there is a little req not to bid on GWS players this year to Freo, Pies, Blues & St K included in the deals.

The cry baby finally gets to go home
Odd thing is Leon has consistently said he's too good a player and a person to be lost to the game. Last time we were in Perth a group of players caught up with him. Supports the cub's line he remains popular with the playing group and the opposite of the vibe from the club re Boyd for example.
Give him a break

Pretty good deal for both clubs. Freo can still get a good player at 7 and 33 is a bonus. Interesting to see how McCarthy comes back after a year away.
On a straight points value, McCarthy was traded for pick 71.

As at today (after the Compo picks, Freo gave away pick 3 (worth 2234 points).
They got back picks 7 (1,644 points), 34 (542 points), and 72 (19 points)... Which total 2205 points.
So, the net difference is 29 points, which is equivalent to pick 71.

The only intangible is if GWS's move up the draft order is a strategic one, where they get a player they really want with pick 3, because they believe he won't be there at pick 7. Otherwise, on a purely points value, pick 71 for McCarthy is a steal for Freo.

my guess is sps is likely to be available at 7.
he is sliding

Last time GWS did this, they did it with Tyson, a former top 3 pick who they traded for the equivalent of pick 15.

They picked Josh Kelly.

I think the draft pick value doesn't capture the disproportionate value of really early picks where you know who you can target. Sydney offered picks 6 and 14 for pick 3 in 2009 to draft Martin. That would be considered massive overs as a "fair" trade would've been the equivalent of pick 6 + 14 for picks 3 + 30. Richmond knocked them back.

That is what happens when the afl create a monster, that can just give away decent players for nothing
