Pretty simple - 7 and 9 want to pump in as many ads as possible and they can't do it when it is live.

It is a great TV deal hey?

Its to encourage people to attend games. By not telecasting live against the gate they're reducing the chance that people will opt to watch the footy on tele rather than actually attend the game.

No its not. The AFL has given Ch 7 permission to play friday night games live against the gate.

I dont believe its got anything to do with live against the gate, and anyway why wouldnt they show this game live in SA if that was the case.

I reckon Bomber is right, squeeze as many ads in as possible.

yes all to do with advertising more adds, plus after 10.30 the adds are cheaper except if the show runs over which the footy does so from 8.30 to 11.30 the adds all the same price which oevr a year is alot of money.

BH&G rates pretty well in the 7:30 timeslot, so they try to capitalise on good lead in ratings. And they also don't want to go live against the gate to get reduced crowds/revenue from the gate for clubs.

Probably the #1 reason in front of the live agains the gate scenario.

I thought by now it has been well established that "live against the gate" doesn't affect attendances. Ask Cricket Australia. It may actually may encourage attendance.

I don't get home 'til 7.30 P.M. Good enough for me. The game is the same, your thinking has been traduced by an obsession with the irrelevant, human construction of time.

Right. That certainly explains why the game has yet to even start in Perth.

I read about ratings being down for Seven as compared to Nine last year. Does anyone know whether Nine was showing live games this time last year, or were they delayed as well?

2 words: advertising. They can control the amount of ads they stuff in when they already have the footage in the can. When it is live they are restricted to a rushed ad between goals and in low scoring games that hurts their revenue.

Commercial networks need lots of people to watch so they can show potential advertising clients their great ratings. In effect the game is just a coat-hanger for the advertising. Please don't think the coverage of it is the important thing to network executives. If they could they would show advertising only but of course no one would watch. So grudgingly they have to break up the ads with something they think the people will approve of. It is the same with movies and other programming.
