Can we fill our teams needs in this draft.??

drafting is about looking at a players potential (using that players physical, athletic, skill and style based traits) and then using other traits (work ethic, attitude, predicted physical change, adaptibility) to predict to what extent they will fulfill their potential.

Your thesis has potential.

I've been thinking about this for some time. Will picking NN over a MID at 2 put us any closer to a premiership? When was the last time a team with 2 gun ruckmen won a flag? Our last flag was won with a great midfield and defence and one good ruck... same as Geelongs. It was the hawks defence and midfield pressure that won them the flag on the day this year (IMO the cats lost it). Jolly/Ball in 05 were ok but not outstanding.

Can Cox and NN play at the same time and both influence the game?

I'm all for NN but do we draft him as a MID or a Ruck? This draft is good enough for us to draft for needs and not only the best available. I feel classing NN into a role will define how the we go with the other picks.

The next post after this answers your question.

It has been said we lost the 2005 game due to when Cox was off the ground and our second ruck in Seaby was ineffective, the following year we just made it but still went backwards on the scoreboard when Cox was off the ground.

You asked the question with NN are we drafting a ruck or a mid. NN from all reports will be as agile if not more so than Cox. We will have the luxury of having 2 200+cm ruck roving machines, NN was third in clearances in the U18 championships, we desperately need players who can win clearences.

AS to a tall forward as NN develops and Cox racks up the km's we will see Cox play deep forward more and more IMO. Likewise NN will cause some major matchup problems sitting in the goal square.

The ability to play is several positions is more important today than ever before. Next year will see the likes of Staker 196cm, Lynch 196cm, Cox 200+cm and Naitanui 200+cm all running through our midfield.....and I mean running, not loping:D

Likewise I am keen on Walters and think we can afford to take a risk with Swift. We have plenty of backmen to cover tall and small, more so tall. I can see S Selwood, Davis and McGinty developing into the small backpocket with stints in the middle.

Thanks for your reply. I enjoyed reading it.

Is it worth using pick 2 to attempt to solve this issue? Couldn’t pick 18/20 be used?

It goes without saying we need gun mids to win a G/F. 3, maybe 4 of them with another 3 or so solid mids. Whilst Cox as a package is the premier ruckman in the comp as a midfielder alone would you class him in the top 15/20 of the comp? Do you see NN being in the elite bracket as purely a midfielder? I’m all for NN I just hope with picks 18 and 20 we draft the best mids available (preferably Swift and Walters, maybe Zaharakis) and worry about our other holes with the later picks.

It is continually stated that Nicnat would be our second string ruck. No doubt true...but consider, also, that he covers 30 metres in half a nano second..also has strong telescopic arms, is a ferocious, never give up, tackler. He's more than a ruck...he's a midfielder monster. Can any other ruckman do this?

What happens if he is suddenly "rested" in the goal square?....Panic stations, and disruption in the opposition's defence. He might not be the best kick, but bound to kick truely many times, or dish it off....but would still create that panic.

His huge leap would be very effective, also in defense in times of crisis. He is still very raw but he could be moulded. If he turns out to be half as good as his "potential", our worry should not be whether he would achieve it, but will we get him!

Couldn't picks 18/20 be used to get a mid? I reckon the difference between naitanui and say roughead is far greater than the difference between rich and swift/blease/hill

Very true. I'm hoping we draft 2 mids that can play FP at 18 and 20 and not think that one plus NN is enough.

I'm just trying to answer the question of the thread.

 That is phenomenal!!

We can only fill our needs if none of the players we draft fail and don't end up cutting it at AFL level.
Considering the success rate statistics of new draftees it's unlikely that they will all be good enough.. don't get too far ahead of yourself EA ;)

For me any 4 of these from 18-52 will make me happy:
James Strauss, Ryan Shoenmakers, Mitch Brown, Jarrad Blight, Charlie Sharples, Michael Walters and Clancy Pearce.

Shoenmakers, Walters, Blight then Pearce would sound about right.
Still I think Sharples will shock people next season or be a smoky on draft day.
