Captain Judd!!

This one is for trivia buffs. Is Judd the first captain since Carlton was established to not have played a game for Carlton? In the early years was there a guy bought to the club to be a captain coach or something?

Ern Henfry was our premiership captain in 1947 and had never played a game of VFL, came from Perth and made his debut as captain!

Im still not an advocate of Judd being named captain, but captain he is and I'll stand by that! I know he'll be a great captain and everyone already looks up to him which is great.
I really hope Stevo's not too disappointed with the decision and get on with playing great footy.

But why was he a reluctant captain? And how do we really know that? If he was so opposed to what was going on at the club that he eventually had to leave, then why take the captaincy in the first place?

A genuine leader would have taken on the job - but only based on a number of commitments by the club to make changes - eg new leadership group, tighter discipline, more drug testing. He did none of this. He either agreed with how the club was run and was hence part of the problem OR didnt agree and hence is not a genuine leader to stand up for what he believed in....

Either way, I wouldnt want him captaining my club (not that my club Hawthorn doesnt have a total leadership void as well!).

Some people are born into greatness, some are forced into it! Why are we discussing a genuine leader? Sometimes you go with the best man for the job!

He stated publicly that he didn't want to be the Eagles captain, but the board and match comity convinced him that he was the best man for the job! A reluctant leader...WCE wanted him to be captain and made him so! Why did he take it on? would you? He still had a contract to fill!

The facts stand at, He is a brownlow medalist and a premiership captain. If we had one already i'd want someone who has bleed for the club to lead it, but we don't. You have to look at things as they are though, and we had the worst leadership group last year! Judd moved to a club where he was always going to be the stand out player with an impeccable work rate to boot.

Truely when you sit back and ask yourself the question, i'm sure you along with all my hawks mates would love to see him lead your team out, he is the best player in the comp with an awesome work ethic! Every club would, its just happened in uncommon terms!

I'm a bit disappointed. Just reading the articles leading up to this, Judd seemed reluctant, and Stevens seemed keen as.
The press conference today left me underwhelmed... Judd spoke like he wasn't too keen to be there, but when Stevens spoke you could see his heart was broken. Dunno, Judd might be the guy they all look up to, but he seems like he was just pushed into this out of obligation.

Nice trivia work, guys. Hopefully this Blueseum 'identity' will be superfluous in years to come, but interesting to note that both Diggins and Henfry were indeed appointed Captain at a very early stage. Diggins was appointed Captain and won a Premiership in his first year. Henfry had played 2 games for the Club before the appointment.

Interesting to note that both players, plus Barassi, were recently highlighted by the Blueseum in the attached article which focussed on the highest profile recruits to Carlton over the years.

While I've got you, the link to the RIP article at the bottom of the EH entry is a bust.

i think it is a good selection for you guys, i can see the arguement that he hasnt played for you yet, but no doubt he has many stellar seasons ahead and he is still reasonably young.

He also brings a good image and profile to the role off the field which cant hurt, hope it goes well

Can't say I agree with this decision at all. You use to have to pull on the jumper and give it everything you had for it week in week out for years before even been considered to captain the mighty blues. The role in my eyes seems to have now lost it's significance a little.

Stevo should feel cheated, has giving his all to the club in their darkest period, for no reward. I hope he's not one to hold a grudge.

I wish Judd all the best, but feel for Nick Stevens and really hope this doesn't affect his attitude or on field performance.

Well said. Hope he can get over the disappointment of missing out. That's 3 enormous blows for him in around 12 months.

TYPING IN CAPS IS REALLY ANNOYING.........IT'S USED TO SHOUT ONLINE.

Try taking the caps off and use them when you want to emphasis your point.
GOT IT!.:D
BTW welcome to big footy bonnie4

The same way you do those wooden spoons?
Never heard fellow supporters sooking about them. Not happy about them but certainly not hung up about them either .

Kernahan played only one season prior to being named captain .

Congrats to you Juddy . Would've been happy with Stevo or Simmo as well . Have faith in the clubs decision people !

i think stevo will be ok. he seemed to handle being chosen over lance pretty well last year for the first 3 games. plus he seemed to be the "Spiritual Captain" for those games anyway cause lance did SFA.

i think being judds deputy will suit him just fine.

that would Rule Stevens out then.

lets not forget that the greatest captain of them all only played one season of vfl footy before getting the gig in 1987.

notice henfry, diggens, sticks all won flags in 1st season as captain, lets hope judd joins this group

If Stevens can't come back and play good footy after this, it shows he didn't have hte strenght to be captain in the first place imo

I'm VERY happy with the appointment of Judd as captain. Right choice imo. You can't look past a guy with his resume. And to the argument that he's never played a game for us before, I say that doesn't matter if the players wanted him captain. Great decision CFC!

.... only wish Simpson coulda been named joint VC

Well done Juddy:thumbsu: ONLY guy for the job.Look what he has bought to the club already without even putting on a pair of boots.
Round one bring it on!!!!!!!!!:D

Edited for accuracy.

Unfortunately for the Blues what other option did you have?

Stevens......didn't even want to go to the Blues in the first place and messed around off field for the first 1-2 years.

The fact that the Blues really had no one else with even close to what is needed to Captain a club is a poor reflection on the current playing group and on the recruiting department. And that is an indisputable fact.

You can bag the Eagles based on the poor behaviour of a minority group all you like but when you compare Pridis and Cox both coming from the rookie list and both now in the leadership group and well set to be a future Club Captain.

One thing there is no doubt about is the quality of Judd as a Captain. Unlike many other posters I hope and look forward to seeing him getting 100% fit and showing the footy world how a champ can play the game.:thumbsu:

A great interview with Judd on 3AW - http://www.mytalk.com.au/aspx/pages/mediaplayer.aspx?t=audio&w=6878

Juddy said he discussed the captaincy with Stevens whilst soaping his back in the shower. :D

He might play in the NAB cup final if we don't get knocked out.

Juddy plugs the Hyundai green car and isn't happy with 18 teams or expansion.

He is such a cold fish and a robot. ;)

WHAT!!!

I'm guessing (hoping)Judd was soaping his own back and NOT soaping up Stevens.

Hey, Judd could market the Carlton Soap on the Rope product line with Stevo just to clarify what happened.:D

I'm all for the players to bond but there ARE limits......
