Captaincy, Leadership & Marc Murphy

I think that its noble for him to come out with these sorts of comments but in reality, his view on things are just not an accurate assessment of where we are at :

Clearly he didn't read the memo !!

Yeah but what is he going to say .... How about ....

"We are stuffed. It is looking like the coach will get the axe sometime after the next round. Apparently I am going to get traded .... What is Blacktown like? The players are completely disenfranchised from the club by being told by the administration in round 2 that there is little hope and we are rebuilding. Motivation really is at a record high."

.... I am being a bit facetious. I don't really think Murph was the right choice for skipper purely for his persona, but I feel really sorry for him at the moment. Tough job - his only way out is by winning some footy. Hopefully we can turn things around with the next 4 "winnable" games.

Hendo for mine. Big, strong player and visibly gets over to players to speak to them, pat on the back, directs the forward line etc. Hes a barometer. Animated character and plays with heart. Give him the captaincy and see him thrive. I feel as though we need to get away from this idea that a 'lead by example' captain is enough. Hes gotta be vocal. Hes gotta be extroverted and physically able to intimidate. MUrphy got 6 free kicks on the weekend and he lead by getting ragdolled all day. Its not like Selwood who gets 6 free kicks by getting his head knocked off, murph just gets shoved around like a kid. I respect him dont get me wrong, but I just see us thriving with that style of captain.

Hendo is not intimidating

I love Hendo but I'm not sure he's actually physically intimidating. I'm not saying he's timid or anything like that, I've seen him do brave acts like going back with the flight etc but he doesn't actually seem extroverted or a basher of men.

MARC Murphy has heeded the advice of his coach Mick Malthouse to develop a “harder edge” to his leadership, by winning the medal for the best player in the club’s first of the season against St Kilda last Saturday.

Malthouse, who breaks Jock McHale’s coaching record on Friday night, said during the preseason that he understood Murphy was a “nice kid”, but insisted he needed to develop a tougher edge to his leadership.

....they say MM can't develop players:D

Carry Blues midfield and got heavily tagged in his first dozen games as 18 years old is not soft just need “harder edge”:D

I want to see Marc Murphy perform against a top 4 side, that applies a tag and plenty of midfield pressure.

It was probably this time last year, I and a lot of Blues fans were thinking Bryce Gibbs just would never get it, however he put his head down and played best footy of his career. I reckon Murphy can do the same, he has copped a lot of criticism and its how he bounces back that could be the making of him.

It has taken three years for Murphy to just begin to grow into the captaincy role, in my mind thats a hail of long time.

i think for the first year he never really owned the captaincy and was probably still relying on Judd to lead the team, 2nd year he had his injury issues and hopefully we get to see for the rest of the year what he can do.. If he isnt the leader we need, then i hope he steps down at the end of the year and lets the new coach select who he thinks is the best fit.

Are there any examples of weak or ineffectual captains who held the role for a longish time? Can't be too many.

Neale Fraser ,
Sat courtside in a banana lounge sunbaking and drinking iced tea during Davis cup matches for what seemed like decades .

AFL love the "jobs for the old boys" caper but i reckon tennis may even have them covered ...

Got a good feeling about Murphy ATM. Loved his game on the weekend was very hard at it.

Only thing missing was a goal or two. He will really benefit from having Judd Cripps and Whiely

Doing the heavy lifting inside this week.

As a player - looks like his confidence might be on the upswing.

However I'm still not liking that Simmo and Judd seem to be doing all the talking in the huddles. Would not be at all surprised if Murph hands over the captaincy at season's end.

What would people think of a succession plan with Simmo taking the reins for a year (ala Bob Murphy at the Dogs) with a view to Docherty or similar stepping up when he retires?

Watching young Cripps in his recent interview, he has captaincy written all over him.

Well spoken, down to earth & was the VC for the WA U/18 team, he is our next captain for sure, you can bookmark that one right now.

Its an early call, but they way he plays makes him look like a leader, the type of player that will just put his body on the line and get the job done when game is on the line. Still i doubt he will be ready for leadership for another 3 years and not sure Murphy will hang on that long.

Kernahan was named captain in his second year at the club, anything is possible.
