Ratten is a hack. No doubt. Hope the Blues keep him.

Man, that Watson has a gigantic head on him, does he have any Ebert in him? It's a whopper

It's a fair pumpkin isn't it :D

If he ever grows into it he's gunna be a BIG unit.

Happy with how he performed last night, was chopped up on occasion but stuck at the task. Liked his composed kicking throughout the match. Didn't seem to panick.

Need to protect him as the third tall, having Bower back in the team will do this.

Still have a few players to come back into the side ( Henderson, Bower, Kruezer ) that are crucial to our structure.

The only thing that was exposed last night is that Carlton will push into the the eight this year, how far into the eight is the question, but the potential is there to have a real crack.

Should be a real interesting game next week. Will provide some answers to both clubs as to what improvements they have made.

Carlton by 40 + :p

Give him time, he's just growing into it.

I thought Carlton weren't too bad. Still need another decent kp forward, obviously- someone like, well, Kennedy.

Carlton's top 4 or 5 midfielders competed well on the whole, they probably need a few more players to add depth to match collingwood in the midfield rotations but at the top end the difference isn't huge.

This :thumbsu: Everybody goes on about our defence and/or forward line but I thiknk midfield depth is the key. Its the main reason Collingwood are so good imo. At this admittedly early stage, the Grigg/Collins trade may bite us (and yes, i know Grigg requested to leave).

We just had a crap game plan. Too much farting about in the back half which played right into the Pies hands. .

In round 21 last year Adelaide played that way against us and we only won by a few points. The media were jumping all over it like a team had finally learnt to crazk the Pies style. But in reality Pies were going through the motions the last 3 rounds and it was hugely overblown.
Carlton tried to copy it last night and it is just a terrible idea because it gives us plenty of time to get into position. I hope Gavin Brown didn't come up with that

I thought Carlton exposed Collingwood in the first quarter. Centre clearances are crucial and it proved no matter who's backline it is, if you get it in there quickly enough and produce one on one contests, Collingwood struggles just like every other club.

Well done to the Blues.

Agree thought carlton were good last night in a finals type pressure cooker, if it wasn't for a couple of poor umpiring decisions and some stupid foolish efforts by waite, walker, betts and a couple of others it may have went to the wire.

I thought the margin flattered them in the end tbh. I was hoping they could put a dent in Collingwood and eek out a win.

They were once again carried by Judd and a few of their top 6.

Garlett's great game made it even more embarrassing for Eddie Betts. Eddie looked to be going at half pace, fumbled consistently and packed his dacks on more than one occassion.

Not sure what Eddie is like in other pressure games but from memory he tends to crumble?

Yarran crumbled under pressure a few times also but he's got time to iron that out. Don't know why the commentators keep on harping about Yarran when he's yet to play one really good game at AFL and hasn't even strung together a few good games!

Jarrad Waite is still a seriously dumb footballer. Does 1 or 2 good things but makes so many mistakes you want to pull your hair out. You can't rely on him as your forward as you'll never get a consistent 4 quarter effort.

The bottom 6 got exposed by the Collingwood machine. That guy Duigan looked so far out of his depth it was like watching a suburban footballer given a charity game at AFL level.

Carlton defence looks solid enough with Jamison and Bower to come back. Ruck stocks look good too.

I think what it showed last night is how far Carlton are away from Collingwood and they are not a team that can challenge. I walked away thinking Carlton aren't even a top 4 side.[/quote]

I walked away thinking the opposite! Carlton won the first quarter by a point, drew the third quarter and lost the last quarter by a point - the only time we "lost it" was in the second; competitive effort from the Blues against a full-strength Magpies outfit (arguably Dick could come in) that "came to play". With Kreuzer, Henderson, Bower and Houlihan all to come back in the weeks to come I reckon we're looking good for this year.:D

How were Carlton "exposed"? We all know they are an ordinary side, nothing special, glaring weaknesses, and certainly won't see much September action, if any. Collingwood are pacing themselves at the moment, if they really wanted to smash Carlton last night, they would have. They did what they had to do, nothing more, nothing less.

I was a very proud Carlton supporter last night. Alot of media people are saying that Collingwood have improved on last year, and given that they thrashed us both times in 2010, then Carlton must have improved also.

A couple of observations though. Not sure why we dropped Armfield, given he would have been perfect to play on Blair.

Time for Gibbs to become an attacking midfielder.

I'd also put Waite back to CHB. Yes he can take a mark or two in the forward line, but he played his best footy as a backman, and prior to doing his knee, was in career best form. This also frees up Bower to play on the 3rd tall, which he is much more suited to.

When we get Kreuzer back, play him in the goalsquare, and get Warnock to do the majority of the ruckwork. Then you can simply rotate the two bigmen between FF and ruck.

Thought the Blues were quite good last night.

They were playing on some serious raw emotion and intent to "prove" something to the AFL world i.e. before the game in the rooms an assistant or staff member had a piece of paper/newspaper revving them up so the game meant plenty to them. They probably won a little bit of respect last night.

However, my only knock is that they never looked like they were going to win the game. They played well enough and minimised/contained the damage, however, you never sat back thinking, "they can go on and win this game".

It happened alot to Collingwood throughout 2007- early 2010 where I remember last year we lost to Geelong in our first encounter early in the season by about the 20 point range and there was still that "knock" on us about getting the job done in the big games against the best teams in order to be a genuine contender.

Carlton need to claim a big scalp or two throughout the season in order to really be seen by the AFL public as a genuine threat capable of winning silverware ala Collingwood in the 2nd half of 2010 where we went on to defeat all other premiership challengers (particularly round 16 vs St Kilda and round 19 vs Geelong).

If the Blues are around the mark (top 4 wise come round 17ish) where they meet Collingwood again before finals, they need to win that game to give them the belief that they can defeat the better sides. It is just as much "mental" as it is physical. Being "competitive" just ain't enough in the cut throat games- you need to know how to win them.

Bay 13.

Collingwood are a lock-down to win the big one this year, but a couple of sides will really close the gap this year (and set a strong foundation for ultimate success in 2012), and I reckon one of those sides will be Carlton from what I seen last night.

If Carlton had one reliable semi elite tall forward and one reliable semi elite tall defender they would be a consistent top 4 side.

The wonder Chris Judd has done for Carlton has been somewhat undone with Josh Kennedy coming back to Western Australia. Kennedy in that side would have made Carlton a real force.

Definitely agree.

Thought they were quite impressive. The one thing I'd say has been holding them back is playing too many not so smart footballers like Armfield, Robinson but Robinson's suicidal endeavour and athletic abilities were on full show last night and smarter players with more composure like Watson are making a difference already. Yarran still lacks composure but he will settle eventually and obviously he has talent to burn. Garlett is becoming top shelf.
Scotland is severely underrated IMO. Parkin always lists him as a B grader, what the hell does he have to do to be A grade? Smart user, dual sided, knows where to go to find it. Fantastic player. Still better than Gibbs at this stage.
Imagine how much better they would be with Fev? Seeing him in the stands last night thought if he manages to stay sober and fit they could pick him up for peanuts at the end of the year for a tilt in 2012.

Scotland very rarely plays a sub-par game and he is a very smart footballer - severely underrated as you said. Has been very consistent in our B&F and doesn't really get the accolades he should.

Must admit that at the end of last year I thought the Blues didn't have enough improvement in them to challenge for the top 4 in 2011. I sort of thought that they'd probably be about the same as 2010. But from what I saw last night I think they've made some real progress. They've added in some solid players who won't be stars, but will give them depth and make them a more competitive team. The style they're trying to play requires a few preseasons to build up to so I can see them starting games strong and gassing out in second halves throughout the season. This year feels like there's a changing of the guard and we'll see a change in who makes up the top 4. I think the Blues are in the mix and could force their way into a position to challenge as some teams slide. I don't think they're a legit challenger yet, but they're on the right path and in September anything can happen.

gonna be a cracker of a game no doubt. I can't see you winning by that much, but you did better than I thought you would last night. Not sure if that's a reflection on Collingwood though, but you can't take anything away from les blues

Give him time, he's just growing into it.

I thought Carlton weren't too bad. Still need another decent kp forward, obviously- someone like, well, Kennedy.

yeah true.

I really like Watson, for the record. He is showing some great composure for somebody his age, and you can just see he's going to be a really good defender for many years. Big bodied, long dependable kick. He's literally exactly the player Carlton have been crying out for.

What did you think about the look into their match committee? I was a bit surprised, it was like they were reading out a bigfooty thread.

TBH I only caught snippets, didn't really start focusing on the box til bounce down, but yeah, now you mention it I did look at it thinking wtf? It's hardly "brainstrust" stuff. Doesn't help he looks like Alfred E Neumann

I think the game by Carlton was their absolute best, but the game by Collingwood was not their absolute best.
No doubt Carlton are on the rise but I think the gap is far wider than last nights result
