Is Ed Curnow tracking for a round 1 return? I noticed he isn't in the contact drill group.

Great that he is fit and all.

I was watching the round 3 game against the pies and he was doing very well so I hope he hits that form again. (I watched Watson too who did well considering his opponents)

Not a joke.
Ed didn't win our time trial for nothing.
He sets himself a quick pace over 200 or 400 and maintains it to wear his opponents (?) down.
Judd will put in the burst at the end, but Curnow already has too much on him.
There seems to be a healthy respect between the two, which engages this type of mini competition between them.

Armfield? I don't know.

Sorry, when you said sprints I thought 50/100 metres tops. Good on Ed though, both hard distances to run well.

Midfield is looking great this year by the sounds of things Harks. Gibbs and Murphy seem to be training well and Judd seems to be coming along pretty well too. It's great to hear the Curnow is going so well, would you say he's ahead of where he was this time last year? Lucas sounds like being a part of things and I hope he is. Plenty of talk around Joseph too and even Mclean is training well from what I hear. Any chance of seeing Touhy on the ball this year? He was impressive in this role when he got a chance at the end of last year and seems to have all the tools for the position. I guess there is a good chance Gibbs will play a similar role to Kouta of 2000 if he plays on the ball and a bit up forward which is really exciting.

Thanks again for the great report Harks! Did you happen to notice how any of Bootsma, McInnes, Collins, or Kerr went today? And, did Casboult show anything to suggest he may get a game in 2012?

Yeah the thing with Mclean is with just a 3 man bench it's hard to pick him as most midfielders can rotate through other positions like the forward line and somethimes the backline. Makes it even harder with Curnow and now Lucas looking so good but there are always injuries and if he's fit and improved he'll get a few games no doubt.

It will be interesting to see how it all works out with Ellard, McLean, Joseph, Armfield, Lucas, and Curnow.

Especially with Ellard, McLean, and Curnow. McLean really should be ahead of both them. We'll see how it all pans out.

Kerr: Stepped up and almost looks regular senior quality through training, if you know what I mean.
Goal-kicking is also looking good right now.

You'd think they'd chuck Kerr in to give Betts a scare if he is out of form.

Maybe the match up against GWS is a good opportunity for Kerr?

No games to those who are undeserving.

We can't afford to simply give games to certain players for the sake of it, regardless of who the opposition is.

Picking Kerr to play GWS would not be the difference between winning and losing, and it would give him good experience, but that's not everything we need to worry about.

The competition is very even this year. Whilst we should finish in the top 4 and I expect us to, there's no telling what may happen. Percentage could well come into it and as such we need to bury the teams that we should.

Play our best available squad at every opportunity, particularly early in the year. If GWS was later in the season there may have been a case for playing Kerr, but as we play them early I'm not sure there is.

Get into a good position first and foremost, then think about resting players/promoting for the experience. Ratten is on record lamenting a missed opportunity to rest key players late in the season because we severely under-performed in certain matches. Arguably that cost us dearly in the end as other teams at the top were just fresher than us. We can't afford to, and don't want to let that happen to us yet again in 2012.

If Kerr gets a game it should be because he deserves it, or because we simply don't have a choice. Not for a moment am I saying I don't want to see him, nor am I saying he doesn't deserve selection. If he's there or there abouts at any stage throughout the season, particularly in the early and middle stages of the year, it should be based on merit and nothing else.

Bootsma: Didn't stand out as much as other days, but that's not really saying anything. He's a good one, have no doubt.
I'll tell you what though: The kid can really kick. He'll boot an easy goal from 50 out, goal post high.
Not expected from such a skinny kid, but he has that lean and extension that just sends the ball on its way and it just keeps going.

McInnes: At least he's on the park now. Along with a few others, looks solid without standing out.

Collins: Same old story on Collins. A beautiful mover and a good kick but hasn't been quite involved in recent weeks.
The practice matches should start telling us where he's at.

Kerr: Stepped up and almost looks regular senior quality through training, if you know what I mean.
Goal-kicking is also looking good right now.

Casboult is Casboult: Took the strongest contested mark on the park today, but needs all those other things to start working for him before he'll be considered for senior selection.

Thanks for that info.
As Kerr is stepping up, I wonder whether he would be considered as only a possible replacement small forward (for Betts or Garlett) or maybe for another position, perhaps in the midfield.

Oops, I meant Hampson.
Henderson was involved hence my glowing appraisal of him.

EDIT:
You may have had a different viewing point to me.
What did you take away from the session?

First training session in a couple of years that hasn't been a practice match, so wasn't sure what to look for. The vast number of new faces threw me out a bit. Eddie's got a good 10cm on Bransgrove  (I think it was him).

What struck me most was just how much leaner Judd looked. Definitely closer to the WCE Judd than the ball of muscle that he's been in recent times. Covered the ground brilliantly, though he's still got that ungainly kicking style. Very interested in seeing how a thinner and hopefully more agile Judd will go, as I thought his bash and crash approach made him too predictable for the opposition last season.

Spent a good 10 minutes looking for Gibbs but once I found him couldn't take my eyes of him. Funnily enough the first time I glimpsed him was him being uncharacteristically tackled in a drill. Genuine man crush for the man and while he didn't star, he just moves so well and looks to have lost a bit of that boyish puppy fat.

Marc Murphy was Marc Murphy - burst of speed and excellent use of the footy. Doesn't make mistakes and should earn a second AA jumper barring calamity.

On Henderson, how much more confident does he look with ball in hands in defence? While up forward he looked timid and unsure of himself at times, down back he's got a daring unbecoming of a bloke his size. Love watching him sidestep guys half his size. :thumbsu:

Garlett seemed to be taking it a bit jovially at times and copped a fair spray for not paying attention in the match simulation. Eddie on the other hand impressed me with his voice (including a certain 4 letter S word he shouted at the footy :D).

Kane Lucas looks so much surer of himself than he did last season. Running and carrying with the footy, instructing other blokes, solid with his disposals. Based on today, staking a real claim to be in the 22 come round 1. Dylan Buckley wasn't as slight as he looked in the pictures and seems to have a fair kick on him.
