Positive signs towards the end, but cannot allow good sides a strong start against us or else it's going to be very difficult to come back obviously.

I thought Jamison made a really good comeback, unlucky to not have three goals to his name. We also played fairly well considering Judd had no impact, there were a few moments where stupid skill errors killed us, missed targets etc. Needed to be much cleaner aswell.

On a positive I thought Hendo was good. looks really good when the ball hits the ground. 2 of buds goals were cheapies.

Worse game I have ever seen judd play for the blues.

Duigan is struggling.

only 3 players I trust with the ball : Yarran scotland and murphy. Every 1 elses skills need a lift.

And forwards WHEN U ****ING HAVE CHRIS YARRAN BOUNCING UP THE WING WITH NO 1 INFRONT OF HIM BUT YOU, WOULD IT KILL YOU TO MAKE A ****ING LEAD.

While we are on the topic of Chris Yarran I'd like to see him take on more people, he is clearly much faster than anyone else. Burn them buddy, have confidence in yourself. (if i had that pace i'd be going nuts).

I haven't seen you guys play for some time, and to be perfectly honest couldn't understand the hype pre-game. At half-time I had merely reinforced my opinion. I learnt a lot about what the Blues are about in the second half.

In a high-pressure, high-intensity game it was a question of whose skills would stand up, and for the majority of the first half, it was the Hawks. Lacking the "depth of Carlton's midfield" (according to every media source this week), and with Mitchell and Burgoyne playing out of the centre-square, it was left to the likes of Hodge, Lewis and Sewell to beat their more fancied rivals. Judd and Murphy were both noticeable in their absence.

The second half was a different story. Bailey noticeably tired, and Warnock and Kreuzer asserted themselves on the contest, spoon-feeding your midfield. In a sign of the modern-game, once Carlton started winning the centre contests and Hawks were working it out from defensive positions the game turned around, the Hawks looking shaky and the Blues with loose men in dangerous positions.

In the end a close win for the Hawks, far closer than perhaps it should have been.

Some random thoughts on your players, including some that I learnt about:

Betts - Far harder worker than I thought. Consistently working hard up to (and past) the wing to present, doubling back to link up handball, and getting to dangerous positions. It wasn't his night, but he just worked so damn hard.

Yarren - I just don't get it. Must have had 10 or more shanks when kicking under little pressure. In the first half was one of Hawthorn's biggest contributors.

Warnock - Not sure why, but he gets away with looking at the opposition ruck in contests, and uses this to his advantage. Once Bailey tired he became the most influential player on the ground.

Kreuzer - Really don't see him as a forward, he does so much around the ground and his skills are almost good enough to play as a midfielder.

Judd - Personally think he is incredibly over-rated by the general media - good ballwinner but without the skills, or even the breakaway pace of his youth. You cannot question his work ethic though. Thoroughly thrashed by a rotation of Lewis and Hodge in the first half he just kept battling. Not many sides would run-off him as much as Hawks did - perhaps a new experience for him?

Duigan - he's in my DT, but I've never really paid much attention apart from scores. Cool, calm over (and under) the ball and much stronger in the air than you'd expect. A real find.

Jamieson - forwards just get noticed so much more, don't they? Reads the ball extremely well, perhaps he will become a more permanent option for you up front.

Gibbs - absolutely wasted down back. In the midfield is influential as the outlet option due to his nous (and obvious skills). In defence he doesn't get involved in enough play unless your midfield is on top - it's a luxury at this stage.

Henderson - Did a great job outmatched on Franklin (who incidentally is learning to run onto the ball instead of wanting it on his head - much harder to defend). Good spoiling and strong in the body. Also plays the ball not the man which is refreshing to see in defenders.

Good luck for the rest of the season, finishing 5th you could well have Essendon and then Eagles in Perth....if you make the Prelim you'll have earnt it.

Thanks for writing what im thinking:thumbsu:

Pretty poor rant thread. I expected a lot more bitterness when we narrowly lost to a very good side
Kick 8.18 and only turn up for half a game and you are bound to lose against quality opposition.

We are just lucky they couldn't kick straight either, else the margin wouldn't have been as flattering.

Robbo looks sore. Needs the rest. Duigan has to go. He is so unreliablewith his skills. Ellard has given us nothing for a long time.

On a positive note, Jammo did really well. One goal thanks to Duigan and another thanks to Thornton. Buddy really kept under control otherwise. Aj did well on Cyril. Carrots on mitchel fantastic. Simmo and Scotland superb.

Once they realized they are miles faster than the hawks than ran the footy. Pity they forgot that in the first half.

The side still has no self belief. They need to make the Prelim so they can have faith in themselves.

Finish where we deserved to. Didn't beat a top 4 side in 5 games this year.

Isn't this the same Duigan who has to go?

Thought he made a few mistakes and he had plenty of mates but overall he was a bloody long way from our worst

How goods yarran
Like hendos game
Loving the pickup of Laidler
Well done simmo
AJ on rioli(great)
Ellard early on Mitchell(great)
Scotland and Murph just keep on going (consistent)

Betts cant keep on being goaless against top 4 teams all the time(you get a name for doing that)

Gibbs cant be kicking 4 points

Garlett needs to slow down and relax(panics)
Tbird hold your feet
Warnock too soft(how many contested marks for the year?)
Army skills are under 12 like

Pretty spot on post.

I thought Walks did really well in the second half too.

YOu can't give any team, let alone a good one, a 45 point lead and expect to reel them in. Having said that, we came close and if we had taken our chances could have pulled it off.

To the hawk supporter: yarran was probably 2nd best on ground after Simpson for us. Get a clue. Also Gibbs was mainly a mid forward you peanut.

Hendo was ok. Thornton was great in the 2nd half while dropping back. Was really happy for jamo though he shouldn't have been out there.

Gibbs had a shocker IMO but mainly from the perspective of his misses. Really cost us.

That first half though... My. Lord.

And juddy looked tired guess a good time to get a break.

Second half showed why we should GTFO of Etihad as soon as possible.

My biggest rant, though is about the man love that Bruce has for Rioli, FFS Joseph pantsed him and he, sure as hell, is no champion.

I don't understand this position, if we are losing at Etihad, what are all the other teams doing that allows them to beat us there so frequently - the soreness factor is not going to fly, this is especially troublesome since we play there all the time and should be able to become a specialist Etihad team - but no.

I'm a tad worried that Juddy may be carrying some kind of injury...i hope he just had an off night .

The sooner we get away from that shitty venue the better...it suits Tassies style of play down to the ground ..on the wide open spaces we can use our run and carry ...unfortunately that wouldn't help our atrocious goal kicking.

Good comeback by the boys ..but we should never have been that far behind .

Ellard needs a rest.

Kreuzer is awesome ..almost another midfielder .

Buddy pushes and holds players and gets away with it more than any other player i have seen .

We are setting our side up to be a MCG side IMO. Our contract with Etihad is up sooner rather than later and we play half our home games at the G anyway.

Last specialist Etihad team to win a flag? Essendon in 2000. Enough said.
