Geelong has finalised its 2016 coaching structure, with Matthew Scarlett taking the role as assistant coach overseeing defence and Shane O'Bree taking over as VFL coach.

Matthew Knights and James Rahilly will work with the Cats midfielders and Blake Caracella will be forwards coach.

Paul Hood who coached Geelong's VFL unit last year has moved into the club's player development area as player development manager, while Nigel Lappin will work with the Cats younger players as part of the club's academy program.

As has been previously announced, Simon Lloyd has joined the club as director of coaching where he will head the performance and development of coaches and the player development program.

It is always a very very good thing when the Greatest backman of all time is coaching the backline.
O'Bree shunted out of the middle is a good go aswell, I also like Knights and Rahilly as mid coaches and of course Lloyd comes highly touted.
Good changes.

Can't see a mention of a dedicated ruck coach there. Given how young our ruck stocks are would have thought they would at least have a part time ruck coach

Dangerfield's got a career high best of 6 hit outs in a game I think so think he will use the experience from that to lead the ruck group from the front in 2016 ;)

Can anyone post a comparison between ins/out of positional coaching? I cant remember who was defense/mid/forward coach for 2015.
Perhaps refer to this.

I won't vouch for its veracity through.

Also, as a matter of interest, it says Knights & Lappin were in charge of the midfield this year while O'Bree was moved into a development role.

So, while it is a board hobby to kick O'Bree about our clearance work, it doesn't look like he was in the position of midfield coach in 2015.

Perhaps just blame him for laying the ground work. ;)

O'Bree no longer involved with the seniors.

Not too sure of this tack with regards to ruck coaching:
Cook mentioned money in the footy dept was too tight for one in 2015.

Likely to be the same reason in 2016?

Hood back to VFL coach, O'Bree to centrelink viola free cash

Wow. Considering ruck has been a major hole in the Geelong structure since 2011 you'd think they might have either found money or rationalised other positions to create a ruck coaching position.

I am pleased (along with everyone else) to see Matty on board more fully.

I think he will instil a very hard and demanding edge on the backs, which will flow through the team as a whole.

No nonsense, his way or the highway, footy full-on, no quarter asked or given, stand up as men and set your jaws as steel, etc, etc.

Yeah well blame the clubs for pushing for a footy dept spending cap.

We need fitness staff, physios, doctors, midfield, defence, forward coaches. What can we cut that's in the footy dept?

2 midfield coaching positions?

Can someone with some actual knowledge of O'Bree's input into the club provide me an explanation as to why he is so despised on this board?
I'm flummoxed at how our midfield has gone backwards with O'Bree in charge.

There are a number of factors involved but the most obvious is the positioning and structure and the stoppages... we simply get destroyed in this area, and it's obvious players stand in the wrong positions for a start.

It is more complex than that however but the buck stops with him.
