Cats have played 10 first gamers in 2012.

Yes and in a few cases, no. If we are sticking with Dawson Simpson as ruck, he needs to play regularly. Jordan Murdoch is interesting too. He really hadn't done anything wrong, but is dropped when we need his leg speed. You'd hope Scott and his assistants know what they are doing, though. And I put my faith in the guy.

2010 I seemed to remember Menzel and Duncan getting dropped for no other reason than older regular players were returning from injury. Joel Corey being one of them. He had a horror '10.

As a Geelong fan, looking at the list of that 10, I am worried. Few have shown anything. I think Smedts will make it. Murdoch looked ok in his two games.

If you'd looked at these names in 2002 you might have said the same thing - Chapman, Ablett, Kelly, Bartel, Johnson, Ling, Corey, Enright. How anyone can possibly know how good any of them will be after 10 games or less is beyond me.

Have this discussion when they've reached 50-60 games. At least. Because, as Hawkins showed last year. It's still far too early to tell.

Nah, they were all in decent form leading up to the Hawks game, but they lost form the moment the Hawks got into them. Stop worrying about the Hawks, worry about your own ailing squad. Geelong ... voyage to the bottom of the ladder now showing at a football ground near you.

Funny, your posts are normally intelligent too. The evidence for this is...?

If you ignore the crap in this thread, it appears the cats young players are not getting a decent run of games to prove themselves.

Cats fans, is this a weakness of Chris Scott to not stick with the youngsters?

Interested in honest opinions.

I don't think so. The fact is we don't know what goes on at the club (much as we wish we did, or think we do), and all clubs now are so much better at managing the workloads of developing players. I wouldn't mind betting Scott has a ideal number of games he wants debutants to play for the year, and he's not going to go beyond it for fear of wearing them out. I suspect too he won't give players too many senior games in a row if they are still a little undeveloped (hence Mitch Brown getting omitted for the stronger Josh Walker). That's probably a reason why Corey and Stokes continue to dodge the axe, not on performance but because they are mature bodies and he only wants so many youngsters out there. That's the best reasoning I can come up with.

It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario. If he doesn't promote youth we're too old and finished. If he does, we're too young and inexperienced - and finished. Interesting.

I'd also bet that by say 2014 Scott wants the bulk of the side to be between 50-100 games at least. Not 7 players between 150-250 games and 15 in single figures. Then you would see them plummet.

The only youngsters that have been given extended runs this season have been Taylor Hunt, Motlop and Guthrie - each has only missed one game. The likes of Smedts and Murdoch have been in and out of the team. And we also have Christensen, Duncan and West who only established themselves as best 22 players last year. No doubt Stringer would also be in the team at the moment if not for his (alleged) off-field stupidity.

Despite having two debutantes tomorrow night, our experience levels are pretty similar to when we played Collingwood in round 8. From that game,

OUT: Bartel, Podsiadly, Stephenson (was his third game), Stringer (was his fifth game)
IN: Scarlett, Christensen, Walker (first game), Sheringham (first game)

Good on them, may as well get a look at the next generation in a winning environment. Has to be a better approach than how many teams wait until the end of a season before deciding to turn the wheel and tip out all the experience at once. I'm still sure no team would like to meet them in September should they make it.

I strongly feel Murdoch will be a late inclusion tomorrow night, maybe at the expense of an older body like corey ...we could be even younger...
If it is wet, no way - Corey is a wet weather specialist.

Smart by Geelong IMO. They know that there is NO substitute for playing with champions. Look at how christensen, selwood Menzel have totally fast tracked. This feeling side are once in a lifetime good and they realize the window to be mentored by the likes of corey, Scarlett, enright et el is vanishing by the day. They are happy to sacrifice this year to a degree in order to smash games into kids while they have this unique opportunity to fast track experience from legends of the game, rather than squeezing every last drop out of the current group then be left with a list of Kids with no experience all coming In together with No experience

Think the comp is even now...?

22 guns will be running around for each team each week in 2014 going on these sorts of assessments.

Alright then, the kid will be a champ!

Nah, My team will have 22 guns, all other teams will have 22 spuds.

Don't like the argument that blooding youngsters for a few games a year is suddenly a sign of depth (Which doesn't appear to be what this thread is about luckily).

The rubbish over the Collingwood debutants was just stupid, suddenly players like Williams, Elliot, Sinclair & Paine are a sign of depth is just idiotic.

Not saying anything about these players individually (Or the Geelong boys) but the odds of having a debutant provide reasonable cover in a premiership year would be incredibly low.

I personally don't like the idea of giving young players 3-4 games a year, particularly so many of them in Geelong's case, but I'm also personally pretty low on coaching experience compared to Chris Scott so what would I know.

Chris Scott knows he needs to re-invigorate his side and pronto, as well as get as many games into his youngsters as possible before most of his best players retire over the next few years, hence the large amount of first gamers. I don't expect to see many/any of them playing if Geelong makes this year's finals though.

It's going to be mildly interesting to see if Geelong can avoid bottoming out as the Bulldogs have over the coming years. History has shown once the bulk of a teams best 22 passes a certain age it gets very tough to remain competitive. At least the Ablett compensation picks will help them slightly.

I kind of think that giving a large group of young players 2-4 games a year in the AFL doesn't really make them develop any quicker. Most young guys take 50+ games before we even start to see them perform on a consistent level. I'd rather see them play fewer young guys but just concentrate on the best ones going forward. Give them 12-15 games over the season to continue to build them up. But this is a sign that the Cats are working towards the future that's for sure. I wouldn't be claiming the Dynasty is over if we still make the 8 this year because given who we are selecting each week that is a pretty good effort.

I think the Cats have some really good up and coming players like Duncan, Vardy, Menzel, Smedts, Murdoch, Horlin-Smith, T Hunt, Guthrie, Brown & Stringer all come to mind easily as the future of our team. But many of them haven't even played 20 AFL games yet. So we cannot expect them at this time to play with the same experience and intensity as some of our senior guys.

The Club has real balancing act at the moment with trying to build for the future and also hopefully cash in on still having a great bunch of senior players still there. Time will tell if they can pull it off (trying to do both simultaneously) and I suspect if they do succeed every other club will be trying to copy their model in years to come. Especially those faced with transitions from success to middle of the road as stars retire etc.

I am not confident it can be done but I admire the cats for trying these things and it just shows what a great club they are.

Agree, I think Geelong should not have dropped Murdoch and Brown. They played pretty well last week, but Josh Walker deserves a spot, It is a young Geelong team. Geelong have never had they're best team on the park this season and the majority of the media forget that. Always hearing about Collingwood's injuries, but not Geelong. Missing from Geelong Vardy, Menzel,Varcoe,Bartel,Wojo And J Pod.
probably because they're top 4 and you're aspiring to scrape into 8th

Jarrod Blair, Alex Fasolo please meet 90% of the other debutants in a premiership year. Take your time there's a few to get round.

100% of Collingwood's debutants in their premiership year 2010 played in, and contributed significantly to, said premiership.
