Why would Stewart not be the obvious candidate?

Anyway, I'm happy with Dangerfield as a leader. God knows that nobody has put in more on-field effort over the last seven years to put the club on his back and carry us over the line. He's also pretty clearly a natural leader in the way that he carries himself.

He's not Selwood. People seem to want him to be Selwood - understandably - but he's not the same kind of person, or the same kind of leader. Selwood is more of the old-fashioned type; Dangerfield is a bit more nuanced. Neither is necessarily better than the other, in that sense.
Worth listening to Howie games interview with Selwood. He said as a young captain he lead by on field effort and display of ourage etc (not verbatim).

This may be the challenge for Danger. His mind wont take him there any mote week in week out whereas both Danger and Sel could do that at ages 21 to 31 almost without fail.

SDK averages 4.44 marks per game, Ratugolea averages 4.79 - not really a big difference there

Even against Port, there was only 1 mark difference between the two with Ratugolea taking 8 to SDKs 7

What was interesting though is that there were a couple of times Ratugolea was out on his own, he was looked at but ignored by teammates who looked elsewhere for an option - teammates still targeted SDK as an outlet option
I think they mean contested marks, which he leads 1.6 to 0.6 a game. Or perhaps intercept marks, 3.1 to 1.4 a game. Ratugolea also makes spoils more often, with 6.92 a game to De Koning's 4.73. Then when it comes to Esava's supposed weakness, defensive 1v1 contests, he has lost 23% of them compared to 29% for De Koning.

Sav has comfortably had a better year when it comes to contested situations and repelling attacks.

Like you said, De Koning gets involved in more possession chains and is used as a link up player more often.

I assume Bews is fit? He should definitely come in to play on Elliott next week, W Rioli had so much space on Saturday night and I fear Elliott will kick six on us if he is afforded the same.
Yes, although Bews stopping power and rebounding plays aren't what they were, we can't have a defensive unit without a small lockdown defender. It doesn't seem like they are keen to get O'Connor to do that, so I'd say it will come down to a choice of dropping him or Tuohy.

Good to get the win. Port we’re seriously undermanned so we are still well off the pace to be contending for premiership.

Miers has been outstanding all year. He will win our B&F.

Close (8 possessions) and Stengle (11) just isn’t enough. We don’t have a high possession midfield so these guys need to work harder and compete better 1:1. Our small forwards were the best in the league last year and have been well down all season.

Kolo didn’t seem to have a good match-up. He played poorly but will have more suited opponents next game.

Rioli was just too quick and evasive, Fox tracked him and showed up Kolo's lack of nouse. He had the opportunity to go with him, but mentally slow and too far off him. Consequently Rioli gets his running tail up.
The whole back line has lost cohesion. Stewart only has to be off his game and we're sunk. Close was wandering around not knowing who to pick up. I eventually said FFS get Close out of there. There's only one Gryan, and where he used to help run the ball out, he's now often further downfield, for that wing play we all know. We're harsh critics, and I get the midfield blame, but they are just not fast enough to man up even when the ball comes in at a slower rate. Compounded by now not being able to get the kick out of D50 smoothly.
Stanley's kick straight to Port was laughable. Maybe if Parf stays in would help, or listen to most BF posters and play Knevitt for a bit of urgency, because right now we go into important games (fast forward lines) slowly, on a hope and a prayer.

The facepalm is simple - the notion "At least Ratugolea can take a mark", implying that SDK isn't holding his marks is false when looking across the season

In the 9 games played together:
  • Once the same number of marks; 2 each against Essendon though SDK did finish with a fractured cheekbone
  • 3 games Ratugolea has taken more marks; Collingwood, WCE & Port
  • 5 games SDK had taken more marks; Carlton, Suns, Swans (x 2) & North

By that notion, we should select SDK ahead of Ratugolea as at least he takes more marks in games both play...

That’s a bit misleading though. Not all marks are equal in terms of difficulty. If you’re talking about an uncontested chip across the D50 from a teammate, literally any AFL player can mark that.

Twice as many contested marks and intercept marks is clearly a significant difference.

This is not me saying that SDK should be dropped, but it’s clearly misleading. I am curious why some people though are so reluctant to criticise SDK or praise Esava. Would you seriously argue SDK played better on the weekend?

Hopefully he's had a strong week on the training track

But if the previous week's VFL is anything to go by, he didn't look close and Elliott would probably love playing on Bews

We might need to use O'Connor more as a small defender and bring someone else in for the midfield rotations

Couldn’t agree more. To my eye I wouldn’t pick him based on that VFL performance. But I understand that the club often backs long term players after a taster in the VFL…so if he is showing full recovery in training maybe they play him. But then we need to think about who comes out…

J. Henry: sorry but I don't by that someone stood on his big toe/foot and that's why they subbed him out. There was a clear issue he was concerned with before the game where he didn't look comfortable during the early warm-up, wasn't moving freely & left the ground early, talking with staff on the way out. He should have been a late change at that stage, and I wouldn't risk him this week - plus, he really didn't offer us much up forward

Tuohy has had an indifferent season, with a few real top games but also a number of below par games where the end looks to be getting close. If he was struggling running around KP, I'm not sure I want to see how much he'd struggle at the MCG, so this could be a good "managed" opportunity

Those are two potential outs to start with

Here we go with the throwing of extra shade on Danger. Had the the temerity to speak the obvious, on his personal extra motivation to drag his chronically injured body through the pain barrier. That segues into a discussion on his worth as Captain, and his failing skills. Go and ask the players and Club what they think. Or if you're a dinosaur, or have no medical knowledge, then develop some empathy for a chosen Captain, who as late as last Saturday, saved our arses.

He was following Stewart's instructions, "kick to the players in teal"...
Interestingly, 24 players from Saturday night's game had more turnovers than Stewart. Given only 4 players has more disposals than Stewart then I think his effective disposal to turnover ratio was pretty good. I guess 91.3% disposal efficiency backs that up too.

I still haven’t even seen his quote tbh so I can’t speak on it but I’m guessing people here took it at as “it’s mentally hard to get up now that I’ve won a flag”

Yes I think one did say that, using the benefit of their Psych Doctorate I guess. Or maybe his Grandma is a BF aficionado.

Dude, you need to have a laugh sometimes, just chill and relax rather than taking everything so seriously

Duuude it's totally cool, I was just providing a finding that may have surprised you. Why can't we just chill out and laugh about that, dude? I'm not saying all of your takes are bad but a surprising number are.

That's weird. Personally I love reading someone who's done their homework.

I'm well aware of the turnover stats from Saturday night

It's just having a laugh after the way Stewart was turning the ball over against Fremantle and then his first quarter against Port when he was doing the same thing

Funny thing is that they are both great posters for stats etc. when most CBF.
differences of opinion I guess.

Edit: oops Catso09 I think we crossed. He's very valuable and knowledgeable even if can get up your nose occasionally. ;)
