It's because they literally don't seem to know how to recruit commentators/interviewers that aren't former successful AFL players, but there aren't any of those from the AFLW yet so they just went with the current player who earns the most cash. If they knew how to hire someone based on aptitude for the position in question...

I don’t understand this incredibly sexist point.
It used to be that women only got jobs becuase they were “sleeping with the boss” now it seems to be “political correctness” or “token female”. At what point do you start believing women actually deserve their jobs? And why can a woman not commentate or be involved in football? They’ve been enjoying it as long as you have. They know just as much (if not more) about it. They can usually string an articulate sentence together and avoid the cliche boys club banter.
I don’t understand the problem.

Think I said it earlier in the thread but Daisey Pearce has been a great addition to SEN with her special comments and game analysis

Listen to Brenton Speed commentate the amazing soccer goal last night. He was able break out of another comment he was making immediately to convey the excitement of the goal. If Basil or Hamish commentate on that they would finish whatever they saying and then commentate on the goal

So on ANZAC day, BT called Michael Hurley Paul Van Der Haar. Then last night he called a Dogs player Stringer. If he's doing the Richmond vs Collingwood game tomorrow, will see a trifecta of mistakes from BT in the one round?

Watching the Fridaynight game was terrible the 3 of them Ling Darc and Hamish just laughing all the time in the show afterwards
BT while bad is different compared to the rest
Also confused to were Sam Mclure came from? The guys that commentate the local league games are actually alright

WA callers, be they footy or racing, seem to have good voices for it. Where is the next Dennis?

Maybe the AFL should invest in a commentator academy.

Sandy is dreadful. Easily the worst current commentator.
Loosely ranking the current TV guys:

Good:
Huddo - good solid caller, especially for Buddy games!
Brenton Speed - solid caller who does 3 sports in 3 days
Adam Papalia - very good up and coming WA caller
Hamish Mc - surprisingly competent but needs a good commentator alongside, easily sidetracked
JB - better on radio but he's reasonably accurate, with a good team around him he'd do a good job
Jason Bennett - not as great as some think but he does a good job and should get more chances

Bad
Eddie McGuire - I don't mind him, but he chooses a side - usually the Victorian underdog - and rides them. Overly enthusiastic
Bruce - sadly way past his best, his infatuation with Esava was sickening on Friday night
BT - a clown. Should only be on radio.
Basil - Freo can still win this

Ugly
Luke Darcy - please don't say that again
Deerrrwayne - chaos ball
Sandy - the worst. Calls behinds as goals. Knows no players outside of Saints games and that has it's own problems

Jason Bennett should see more action for 7.
Kelli Underwood (yeah I know) should get a go on Fox, and Leigh Montagna wasn't bad doing AFLW.

Bruce vocally sucking esava off friday night was utter cringe, just dead cold silence from the other commentators after the first couple times he mentioned how beautiful and thick his legs were. Bruce just loves the fact he gets to hang out with these has been footy players who all secretly laugh at him behind his back, he would be well aware of that as well but can't bring himself to stop the sucking up. Just a man with no soul, a walking cliche.

Did anybody see BT & Watson interview the Saints coach today? The three of them did the slow waltz across an otherwise empty field about an hour before the game. It looked like a kidnapping. Absolutely hysterical. Those two idiots wanted to walk & talk, but the coach kept stopping to answer, so they not so subtly prodded him from one end of Etihad to the other. If that's not bad enough, they had no cameraman with them, so 7 used a long range shot from the grandstand, and half the time their backs were to camera. Shockingly amateurish.

And thanks also to 7 for the close-up of Jake Carlisle's double snot rocket today. Here's a tip to the moron directing this train wreck: if a player raises his finger to his nose, it never leads to anything pleasant. You'd think they'd cut away after the first blow, but no. There's never enough snot for 7. They should change their motto from 'we just love the footy' to 'never enough snot'. And get Kleenex to sponsor them.

You guys need to get a grip, AFL football is by far the hardest sport on earth to commentate, yet we have BF posters who seem to sit down with pen and paper in hand waiting for any mistake the commentators make so they can jott it down and bag them on BF, if any of you had to call a game you would stuff it up royally, even after years of practice, get a grip FFS.

If you want to bag commentators, have a listen to some of the French trotting, "1 is passed by......(ten second pause).....

It's less about the mistakes and more about the commentators putting more effort into amusing themselves than calling the game. The "have you changed your mind yet Lingy?!" during the Carlton Dogs game last week was horrible masturbatory rubbish.

And what do you notice with that group? None of them are ex-footballers. Maybe if the networks concentrated on getting actual commentators to you know, commentate the game maybe we'd be better off.

Move the old guys on. Keep bringing in some of the younger commentators (and Peter Donegan, best sports caller in the country).

Keep a handful of special comments types who don't talk over the commentary (Daisy Pearce has been quite good doing this).

Get rid of the rest. Hard to believe I used to think Wayne Carey had something to offer. Boy, was I wrong.
