ABOUT
Everything appeared to be going well for Chad Morrison up to the start of the 2001 season. A couple of high finishes in the club champion award and he had relatively quickly racked up close to 120 games. Then disaster struck in round 13 against Melbourne when he landed awkwardly and badly damaged a knee which required a reconstruction. He was well advanced in his recovery the next season, going through a routine drill at training and then it “went” again. After missing virtually two full seasons of football, Morrison was eased back into football and went on to play another 28 games for the club before requesting a return to his native Victoria and joining Collingwood for the 2005 season. Morrison could ultimately blame his knees for falling just two games short of life membership of the club, finishing on 148.

PLAYER HONORS
3rd best and fairest 1997 (equal), 2000; AFL Rising Star nominee 1996.

PLAYER STATS
Brownlow Medal: career votes 5.

FROM ARTICLES
In better news, the 26 year-old is enjoying his finest football since a return from two knee reconstructions that destroyed his 2001 and 2002 seasons. His 25 possessions at the weekend followed 27 against Essendon, and an average of 18 per game across three weeks in defence.

Had he played at Collingwood and still gained the same stats in 2004 he would have come in the following positions in our stats:

Going by the top three stats (Kicks, Handball, Disposals) he would have realistically come in the top 4 or 5 of the best and fairest this year at Collingwood.

Here's my two cents on the Chad-

Pros: Very good reader of the play. Finds the ball virtually at will, and can get 25-30 touches seemingly without any effort at all whether he plays in the midfield or backline.
Is quite a damaging goal kicker when played up forward also- again, his knack for being in the right place at the right time means he gets a lot of opportunistic goals when used up forward.
Pretty good mark overhead, composed under pressure. Whilst not always accurate, his kicking on the run has pretty good depth- give him the ball 55m from goal on the run, and he'll have a fair crack at nailing it.

Cons: Dual AC means he is not overly quick or agile. Certainly not slow, but just not lightning fast. In defence he certainly isn't an accountable player- he's more of a loose sweeper.
Not a natural hard nut. Generally he's disciplined enough to put his head over the ball or back into a pack but there are times when his concentration lapses- the impression I've always gotten is of a guy whose first instinct might be to pull out, but is well drilled enough to commit his body to contests.
Biggest weakness imo is his disposal, which at times is pretty sub-standard. Often when he marks the ball in general play he takes a maddening amount of time to dispose of the ball because he isn't at all confident of hitting a target. This is the big limiting factor on him- he gets a lot of stats but doesn't use the ball especially well.

He's not a star and he has some weaknesses, but he's basically a decent player with a lot of good football left in him.

Ironically, though, I think Callum Chambers was the far better prospect of the two guys we traded.

im pretty sure he played for the Big V aswell one year

he played in 1999 before his did his knees.

What Mead said pretty much sums Morrison up.

This season he played 18 games. Started poorly, was dropped back to the WAFL in the middle of the year but came back and played a very good last half for us. Gets a lot of the footy and was generally one for us that got under the guard of other clubs, but his disposal and decision making are dodgy at times. He's a good player and i think the move back to Melbourne will be good for him, especially having MM and Bluey on the coaching staff. They both know his game well so wouldn't have to spend a season figuring out where/how to play him.

He's played 148 games and will be 27 next year so i would say he has another 50-80 games in him if he can stay injury free meaning you'll probably get about 4-5 years out of him.

A very handy pick up ,but I totaly agree with Mead for your side Chambers would have been a better option. He will do very well at Carlton as he can run all day, and he should be as effective for them as Scotland was this year.

From your perspective he could release Ben Johnson from the HBF . Johnson IMO would make an outstanding midfielder.

Anyway well done on a good pick up and I wish Chad all the best as I thought highly of him when he was with us,

Thanks for that.

I still maintain he plays like O'Bree except for with better footskills!

the dude looks like a washed up soft ********. avg of 1.1 tackles a game? hahaha

I marked it up before - not sure if so on bigfooty - but Chad Morrison plays most of his football as a loose back flanker, and rarely has an opponent. He tends to stand out of the play as a reciever.

Morrison is not soft, but he will need to be damaging when loose.
