He sounds as stoked to be at Port as were to land him.

Chad Wingard

And what a level headed kid he sounds. Im confident this kid will leave no stone unturned to get the best out of himself. By all reports its the way his Mum and Dad brought him up which has given him this attitude so kudos to them.

And agree, Wingas should be his nickname

As others said, he speaks very well and maturely, I can see why he was U18 captain. I like the Wanga's comparisons, if he's half as good as Wanga's I'll be stoked.

The midfield is starting to form very well now. Lets see what the coaches can do.

I'm Jelly.

Probably a bit of poetic justice you picking Wingard up considering he's who you should have got had your draft position not being ****ed around by the GWS' entrance concessions.

Nah that would've been Coniglio.

Ah, ok. Well the #1 pick is a startup concession also - its not like GWS won the wooden spoon either.

Forgive me, I mean to insert the word 'ridiculous' or 'over-the-top' to describe the concessions.

Doesn't seem unreasonable to give them some way to field a team next year.

Anyway, Wingard, embrace the love!

Oh, and one more point that hasn't been raised yet. I hope this has taught people who said we should've tanked and 'won' a wooden spoon that would forever be a black mark against our club for the difference between pick 4 and 6 the error of their ways.

We fluked missing the wooden spoon and we fluked wingard dropping to 6.

Pity we couldn't fluke a bottom 2 finish in any other year instead of this one...

We have a really good young group of leaders coming through

Boak, Trengove, Hartett, Brad Ebert, Wingard

Pittard and Jacobs under-rated in this post.

Both outstanding leaders and communicators.

Was thinking about those two, then i felt obligated to put in Surjan, Schulz and Chaplin as well and then i might as well mention the whole leadership group but i think that

Wingard, Boak, Trengove and Hartlett will the main four coming forward, may add in Pittard by the half way mark of next year

The keys for us going forward with this midfield group, will be (1) to keep Hartlett, Gray and Wingard fit and (2) to get the quartet of Moore, Ebert, Pittard and Jacobs as close to A-grade as possible.

We have 7 early round pick ups plus Gray to work through onball rotations. They offer a mixture of size (Moore, Ebert), x-factor (Gray, Wingard), run and carry (Hartlett, Pittard), possession accumulating ability (Jacobs) and grunt (Boak). It's a good mix, before we start considering the potential of Newton, Young, Broadbent, Banner, Irons, Jonas, O'Shea, AhChee or the contributions from Pearce, Salopek and Rodan.

But make no mistake, those first 8 names are key.

Distinct lack of:

Just watched Wingard's PTV interview and to be honest I don't think I've ever seen a kid so excited and happy to be drafted by Port Adelaide. So refreshing. Great speaker and so damn modest.

Lets not confuse good in front a camera with leadership potential. They need to walk the walk, not just talk the talk. Which immediately rules out the likes of Chaplin. I'd rather not nominate players as future captains on drafting. With Wingard I'd rather the next 12 months are spent getting some bulk on him. If that means he doesn't play AFL at all, or misses some SANFL games due to needing to recover, so be it.
