Toast Chad Wingard Retires

Just for fun, I was looking up 2011 Phantom Drafts, and I came across the highly respected Quigley who thought GWS should have taken Wingard with the number one pick. In fact, everything said in the writeup seems pretty well spot on. In the end, it means nothing now - it all comes down to how well Chad plays from here on out, but I thought after Chad's year so far being phenomenal for a second year player, it was nice to read the opinion of someone who rated him very highly as a junior.

Another awesome pickup by Quigley is putting Toby Greene in the top 10, which no one else did (and to us at Pick 6, saying we needed the ball magnet inside midfielder - Ollie Wines anyone?).

He also had Nathan blee going to Hawks at 33

In fairness Blee was coming off an outstanding year in the WAFL as a fullback despite lacking the extra centimetre or two required to fill the role at the highest level.

Even so, playing as third or fourth banana in the Hawks defence would've been career-preferable to playing as midfielder/tagger/HBF/third tall for North Adelaide/the worst Port Adelaide team in 140 years.

Yeah spot on. There were a fair few comparisons of him to Ben Stratton at the time, which I think was a very justifiable call. Blee (1) never put the weight on that Stratton did and (2) wasn't played in the role that got him drafted. Niche players in terrible sides/lists have a lot up against them to succeed.

Sometimes it's funny how the Universe works, I was quite bitter that we bottomed out during a period of expansion as we got crap picks for the position we finished in especially when you consider Hawthorn finished in the same place and got Buddy, Roughy and Lewis for virtually the same price (pick 6 versus 3 of the first 7 picks thanks to the AFL's priority picks system).

But then a young South Australian may have intimated to GWS that he didn't want to leave the state (or maybe play for a start up in a non traditional state) and he fell through to us when others had him pegged for number 1 so I guess it's all swings and roundabouts when you consider we still got the best player from that draft (and possibly the last 10 drafts).

My big board from that draft was:
1. Patton
2. Coniglio
3. Buntine
4. Wingard
5. Tomlinson
6. Tyson

Ah well, still the #1 Wingard fan on BigFooty.

Nah that's a very fair position knowing what was known at the time.

Patton was a no brainer at one. Often wonder what we would have done if we actually had that first pick, would selecting the big key forward have been a mistake? I think it would have made a lot of sense in theory.

Coniglio was and is a gun. Had proven himself in the WAFL seniors from the age of 16 and there was no reason to doubt he wouldn't become a very good AFL footballer. And there's no reason whatsoever to change that assessment now - no, not as good as Wingard, but still a fine player nonetheless.

Buntine was an interesting one. Sounded pretty Luke Hodge like in theory and that's what his performances in his draft year indicated. Hasn't completely found his feet yet, but have seen him take some pretty good steps last season and think he'll have a long career.

Chad at the time had the question of size going against him. Took him no time at all to show that he was not going to be held back by it, but it was a valid concern nonetheless. Really was awesome how that draft worked for us.

I thought Blee had some ability, and as you say was never played in the role that got him drafted, and was used as a spare parts man at Prospect.
I'm assuming he went back to the WAFL, if so did he return to the fullback position and regain his old form?

Just imagine if we had some of the old concessions that rained upon Vic clubs like confetti and we were able to get Wingard and Patton.

Then we wouldn't have Dixon.

Maybe we wouldn't need him.
That is quite possible.
Also possible that we wouldn't have drafted so many talls after that or even traded for Ryder.

PORT Adelaide and Chad Wingard are closer to another deal amid reports they are on the brink of extending the high-marking forward’s tenure for another three seasons.
A club spokesman tonight said he had heard nothing but positive things from the negotiations, but said the club was yet to confirm an agreement had been reached.
Wingard is one of two key signings for the Power alongside Ollie Wines, whose roots in country Victoria have had fans nervous he could be tempted by offers from Melbourne-based clubs.
Wingard, who is close to his family in Murray Bridge, has never given any reason for supporters to fear losing him.
When it was widely speculated Hawthorn was keen on his services earlier this year, he sent out a message via twitter to debunk the rumour.
