Yes it is a no brainer to keep them out till after the bye, give them both a good fully fit training block in the 2-3 weeks prior to the game after the bye.
Potentially it's last roll of the dice for Zorks and Richy.

We kept hearing pre season how much fitter they were than the previous couple of years and no doubt they were.

If we can get them 100% and factor in 8 weeks for them to play and they get through that it would be a good outcome . Zorks plays a bit of a crash and bash style for someone his size ,always putting his body on the line, and Richy likewise cops punishment not being blessed with pace and having to use his experience and physicality. So as they get older for them hammys ,calves and assorted niggles can become more problematic

My thoughts:
  • Berry should be straight into the midfield against Cripps. This is why he should be in the team, l don't mind if he is on the wing for lower clashes/teams with smaller bodied players. However, for teams like Carlton, Geelong, Melbourne he should go in the middle as l don't think his position on the wing is good enough to hold on it's on.
  • Payne onto McKay, Joyce onto McKay, Andrews as the interceptor/resting ruck. If Andrews is on McKay, then McKay will deliberately take him out of the defensive half - like we used to do with McStay on other's gun defenders.
  • Prior (or Madden)/Dev both in. At some point, you have to reward reserves form. Dev has been killing it in the 2's for a while and we keep waiting for a player who plays the same role/position as him. Well Zorko is that mid/fwd that Dev can play. I think playing him in the midfield in the reserves but then playing him on the win in a completly different role that he is practicing in then of course he won't look as good as he does in the reserves. Time to play him where he is learning his craft.

Some early judgements being made on Gunston.

Learning a new system, 3rd or 4th in line, we are adjusting to having a lead up forward, looks to be putting pressure on himself too.

Just give it some time to gel, I reckon he’ll be huge in the second half of the year once he finds his feet.

I guess a positive that Zorks has done a different hammy given how long he was out with the last one. On the downside they are both pinging now! I would try to get him back for 3 quarters v Adelaide.

Rich calf - old man injury. Get super fit and come back post bye. Tell Prior the position is his for now.

Is that a mid-season trade to finally get the twins to play a match together?

I wish i had your faith!

I agree we seem to be going better. But if we lose this match then hard to be confident about that. It feels like a fork in the road to me. Would not shock me if we win well. But equally i can imagine a big blues crowd and a suddenly confident Carlton winning the midfield battle.

I would probably try Joyce on McKay and Payne on Curnow and see if Harris can float. Starce on Silvagni?
I'm thinking we could either bring Prior or Madden in to play on Silvagni. Prior has the disposal + mongrel and will contest hard. Madden has pace + decent leap. Since we're replacing Rich, I'll lean towards Prior for his kicking skills.

Andrews to play on one of the smalls so he can peel off wherever needed. He was sort of doing it in other weeks, runs with a small to keep himself free but does the handover if there is a fast break so our nearest small defender takes on his man and Andrews is free to read the play n intercept.

Its a con. It's the same person moonlighting and getting paid from 2 clubs apparently. True story.

Agree. I have the same feeling regarding Neale/Dunkley/Ashcroft combo. Last week was the first time I saw Ashcroft at the bottom of the pack, flat on ground and scraping for ball. He looked up to see where Neale was and tapped it out of congestion. Now imagine this happening on instinct when all 3 know where each other will be. They are going to find a few more levels together in terms of cohesion and it'll be poetry in motion by then.

end of the day he was found innocent. ah chee was unfortunate but Cripps didn't seek out to hurt him. wrong place, wrong time.
Cripps was not found innocent. The case was thrown out under a legal technicality and he could have been re-tried if the AFL chose to do so. The technicality was around the the advice given to the panel before their deliberation which was only slightly different to the charge. Had the advice been the same as the charge he was guilty as per the first finding, the appeal was on the advice given but absolutely nothing to do with the fact he attacked the head of Ahh Chee.

For want of a bad example - Cripps was charged with manslaughter, but the advice to the jury was to find him guilty of murder when it should have been the manslaughter - what ever way - there was still a dead body on the ground and the crime had been done.

Excellent, I will continue to pick "Guilty but not suspended due to a technicality in the wording."
Thats a good way to put it. He was never tried for his crime. He was charged, found guilty then the case dismissed on appeal under a procedural matter. He could have been re-tried following correct procedures and again would have been found guilty. There was never any defence that Ahh Chee's head was not attacked just the AFL stuffed up, by only a few words, given to the deciding panel. Has the case been re-tried as it should have been Cripps would have been found guilty again.

Not guilty is a legal term in no way to be considered a one on one correlation with being innocent!

ever heard of innocent until proven guilty? end of the day he was cleared to play.

blame the afl lawyers not cripps.
I don't think many are blaming Cripps, it's the bungling of the process that has caused the angst amongst Lions supporters and sympathy for Lachie.

FWIW Cripps and Neale are actually great mates, I have seen them together on Podcasts. I don't think Lachie is too perturbed about missing a 2nd Brownlow, no doubt both of them would happily give up their Brownlow for a Premiership.

Sure I have. But your claim (initially) was that the system had declared him innocent which is not an accurate statement ... many people go to jail for crimes they did not commit and many perpretators walk free. Conflating not-guily with innocent or law with justice etc are common misconceptions.

Oh and I would have had more 'sympathy' for Cripps if his post-incident reactions had been something other than complete satisfaction and a sh*t eating grin after having laid out Ah Chee so think of his actions as deliberate professional sniping** which was, admitedly effective

Anyway moving on from past trolling to our coming engagement - will be a good test for both teams :)

** (then again what do I know - I still think of Jobe Watson as a drug cheat)

Look at this West Coast injury list - all I can say is 'lol':

if the afl lawyers had put forward the right charge, Carlton's defence would have been different. we have no way of knowing what they would have said, so we cant say hes guilty.

if you think youre defending theft and youre being tried for murder of course your defence will be different. the afl stuff up caused for the charge to be rightfully thrown out.

It could be argued Cripps is hard done by because he wasnt given a proper chance to fight the correct charge.

fwiw other than this week I hope the Lions do well. need someone to stop the Pies from winning the flag!

100% ideal scenario would be Joyce being able to play on McKay, with Andrews playing off Silvagni to impact the contest. The issue will be the former not becoming a liability for us.
If we can keep offering quick options , I reckon Joyce and his calibre will be fine.
It's when we don't move into spaces quick enough to give early options , players either have to make a good kick to find someone free or go backwards(hopefully not) or wait a few more seconds and then go down the line to a contest.
I think it's as much on the team in these situations to how well his or any player disposals will be.
As someone else mentioned sorry forget who, Kiddy might find form in Richies absence .
Here's hoping anyway , without Zorks and Rich we need him to start hitting targets .
McKenna certainly doing his job in this area, which is a pleasant surprise as didn't know much about him before he came to us.
This game will give us and the rest of the comp a very good indication of both teams.
Should be a cracker, both teams gotto be up for it.

Lester is a dilemma. He is a much better player than Joyce. Reads the ball better and use of body - doesn't give away free kicks. However I'm concerned if Payne or Andrews got injured who would go to Curnow or McKay?

I would put Wilmot down back for this match to play on one of their little forwards who can be damaging. Bring Prior in as winger who can play off half back as well. Prior has a nice leg on him as well.

Dev Robbo probably the obvious replacement for Zorko.

Like many others have said Berry needs to go to Cripps for entire match.

Lyons to be sub. He could be very handy last qtr.

The game against the Doggies at Marvel we were painfully slow moving the ball. Need to try and find corridor more against Carlton. Gunston - Daniher and Hippy all up forward worries me when the ball hits the deck on grounds like Marvel. it comes out too easy. Be very tempted to replace Gunston with Ah Chee and have him play defensively forward to stop the likes of Saad - Docherty and Newman strolling out of the forward 50. Ah Chee also capable of sneaking an important goal or two.

That said you just know Gunston will be selected.
