And in form opener Hughes goes out for a duck.

I think dropping him was wrong, but bringing him back into the test team when he is completely out of form is a disaster waiting to happen.

One can only assume that Hauritz and Ponting have fallen out of love

If Peter Siddle was the pick of the quicks in Adelaide, then Australian fast bowling is at its lowest ebb

Fair enough. Warnie gets an opportunity to crack shit jokes in the commentary box.

Beer will be 12th, anyway.

Oh, wait.

Michael Beer replaces Xavier Doherty in the squad. Michael is a left-arm orthodox spinner who has been very impressive at domestic level this year. He took wickets against England in the tour match earlier this summer and we expect he will bowl very well against the English on his home ground.

So from this:

“Doug Bollinger has been omitted from the squad. Both Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus did not play in Adelaide but will be strongly considered for selection in the Perth Test match where conditions will suit them. Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle were the pick of our quicks at Adelaide Oval and these four make up the pace attack for the Perth Test match.

it appears that the 12th will come from Johnson and Hilfenhaus.

LOL!! :D :thumbsu:

Nice one! What a stunning pace attack!

I agree.

Pick of the bowlers. Harris for sure but Siddle? How well do you bowl to be one of the picks of the bowlers at 0/100. Consecutive 0/100's.

Harris was the pick, no-one else got close in regards to out mainstream bowlers. Now we have Siddle AND Johnson in the team. a 0/100 specialist and a bloke who went 0/170 and couldn't hit the pitch at times.

Goodbye Ashes.

Hilf and Beer fighting for that last spot IMO

Good to see we just recycle the quicks ad nauseum among the same select group, but we won't go back and pick Hauritz.

Very hard to understand. Either bring in new quicks, or bring back Hauritz, it's a huge mixed message.

Geez not good, 4 pace attack doesn't look that much better than 3 + 1 when you have Siddle and Johnson who can leak runs at a rate of knots. If we are using Smith I'd prefer Hauritz or O'Keefe as the spinner to keep it tight and allow Smith to attack.

Phillip Hughes - 13.56 average (53.04 strike rate) from 9 Shield innings so far this season, including 4 (from 10 balls) and a duck (from 9 balls) in the current match against South Australia. Hasn't even scored a 50 this season.

Considering what led to him being dropped from the Australian team (doubting himself and lacking confidence in what got him there in the first place), he shouldn't even come under consideration until he's scoring heavily and brimming with confidence. The selectors are just setting him up for further failure.

I hope Shaun Marsh tons up against Queensland (19 from 72 balls currently), because he deserves to replace Katich over Hughes based on current form.

25, and you can bet he'll be disappointed with it. He hasn't converted his 50s into 100s, which was a strength of his last season (he may even have had a 100% conversion rate). He's still a gun batsman, just maybe losing concentration perhaps? He is generally getting starts and isn't falling in the same way each time, so it doesn't appear to be a technical issue. He's young, raw, and he'll be back, but it's indicative that he's probably got some maturing to do before he's ready for Test cricket.

For the record, his bowling average this season is a very solid (for a spinner in Australia who isn't Steve O'Keefe) 38, with a SR under 60, and he bowled beautifully and with much more control than usual (generally) for NSW today. He is looking much improved already in that department.

Times are tough when we're picking a bloke that's averaging 25 with the bat and 38 with the ball this year. Would be good if his bowling average was his batting average and vise versa...

It was a bit of a kick in the guts for David Hussey today, he was really keen to get a gig and they didn't even wait to watch his innings. The bloke deserves a bit more respect, an average of over 55 after ten years of cricket... And before you clowns start carrying on about bringing youth into the team don't bother, Australians want to win the ashes first. We can worry about that when we play NZ and Sri Lanka. Australian Cricket needs a shake up, it is a disgrace at the moment.

haha brilliant piece of slap stick comedy there from CA:thumbsu:

so when does the real squad get released?

why would you pick hauritz?

3/106 in the current shield game (combined innings)

i'd prefer them to try at least bowlers like doherty rather than persist with this fill in bowler anymore because that's all hauritz is, or was.

the only bemusing pick for me is hughes over marsh.
