Changes for Round 2 v Brisbane

Bower will go for Grigg
Russell will go for Walker
and maybe Jacobs will go Hampson

No chance mate, the MC arent going to start stuffing around with the back six, esp since they are appearing to be gelling quite nicely. FINALLY!

Grigg in for Garlett and Walker in for Joseph.

But that's not bagging those guys, they both did well for their first games. Especially Jeff. But Grigg and Walker are vital members of our 22 and our Club's future. They need to get a game.

Joseph and Garlett have time to prove themselves - they know that they are capable of playing AFL, and if they stick to it they'll play more games.

Russell turned the ball over way too many times and didn't do much. He will be out for Walker straight up.

Johnson won't be going anywhere, anyone who says he got towled up needs to take another look at the 3rd quarter.

Grigg may come in for Joseph, but I don't rate Grigg all that much so it will be a call for the match committee I guess.

Fisher in for Cloke, he will get a week at least for his bump on Cousins.

Yarran will come in for Garlett eventually, when he is fit enough to play a full game.

The big question is who goes for Stevo next week?

You don't rate Grigg. One of the young rising stars for Carlton. Maybe you should pay more attention to him on the football feild. The bump against Cousins was behind play...nothing really in it at all. Just a bump to say welcome back into AFL. And Stevens is out next week again. Under suspension. So he will not be pulling on his boots.

Only 1 change I would bring Grigg in for Russell who continues to frustrate by making basic skill errors, poor football decisions, letting the opposition walk past him without a whimper and he gives up chasing at the drop of a hat. Call me an arse clown if you like for saying it. The vision of him running outside the boundary line just inside the fence last year when 'chasing' is imbedded in my mind.

You're an arseclown.....if you call for someone to be dropped it should be for what they did or did not do in their last game. Not for something they did last season or because of the stigma that's associated with the player. Russell was fine last night, he wasn't superb but was far from bad.

I was there, although up in the nosebleeds. Hoops just seemed a bit sloppy. I see he racked up the possies, but I just didn't see his value last night. I may need to watch the replay?

That would be advisable.

Houlihan was very useful. No chance of him being dropped.

He's a valuable member of our best 22.

Rather than guys getting dropped for poor performances it may be an issue of looking at an opposition and selecting the team best balance and equipped to beat them - from the whole list.

I agree it is hard to drop someone after an 83 point loss but remember, as much as we were good, the Tigers were terrible!!!

There will be hard luck stories all season hopefully this is used as a positive resulting in driving overall performance up, so that, when a guy gets a chance he plays his heart out for the club.

No-one played a bad game last night, some played better than others, sure, but picking out individuals is problematic, the ultimate goal is winning, and the MC will likely use this as the ultimate measure on who plays or not in the following round. Just my opinion.

The good news for us is that a number of our players, despite playing well, were well below their own best.

Hoops was good without being great, but we know he is capable of more.
Gibbs is in the same boat. I've seen him have 20 touches with more damage inflicted than his 30 last night. Not saying he played poorly, just that by his own standards he can do better.

So yes, I would agree that Hoops may have been a bit sloppy, but his value to the team is still well ahead of those outside the team who would seek to replace him.

I think the decision will be made after Brisbane play this week and our coaches get to assess their game plan etc etc..

But to be honest I seriously think if Simpson does not get reported he still will be dropped, give him some incentive to work on his skills a bit more (he has the heart, but his application last night was lacking).

Cloke I sort of think is a chance to be dropped, but last time we played Brisbane he was our match winner if you all recall!!!

Also Brisbane have some hardened bodies so players like Garlett may be unlucky.

I think this is what may happen.

Simpson -> Walker
Joseph -> Grigg
Garlett -> ??? (maybe Yarran as he's got the better build more suited to the big Brisbane defence).

I'm not calling for him to be dropped based on what I saw last year I'm calling for him to be replaced by a better player. Grigg and Walker are 2 guys that should never be kept out of the side by Russell if they are fit and available.

Drop Fev! He only had 6 kicks for the night.

No, seriously. I'd rather he be rested up to fully recover from this leg problem than play injured for another fortnight with injections and hyperbaric chambers. He was clearly under duress last night.

Would you see him kick 3 goals next week at 80% fitness and 4 goals the following week at 90% fitness? Or rest him a week and have him kick 7 goals in Round 3? :)

Only if this week of treatment makes his leg 100% that he can play without painkillers would I select him in Round 2.

It's a long season - we need depth AND preservation of our players for September. If that means 'playing rotations' and not playing injured stars, bring it on.

I think Ratts wants to see players fight for their spots and will give everyone a chance to prove their worth. Wouldn't be surprised if there are a bunch of changes with no other logic than that.

Hoops was brilliant, the way he read the ball of the pack twice in the third(i think) was just great, never missed a beat running flat out and just picking the ball straight off the packs, nothing better than seeing a player do that.

I wouldnt think that this thinking is part of our clubs mode of operation. I believe players that perform get rewarded by staying in the team. I doubt it would not matter how well someone at Preston pressed for selection, if the 22 perform they are safe. You reward effort with loyalty. What message are you sending someone if they do everything right, have good stats etc, and the team wins (by so much!) and they get dropped anyway. You could do that with the kids for long term management of them issues, that is more likely a hidden reason someone like Garlett or Joseph would suddenly be dropped but not just to give someone else a run.

History would suggest there will be no changes. Sides just don't drop people after 83 points wins, it sends the wrong message.

Having said that, if the MC really wants to bring Grigg and Walker in, it would be for Simpson and Garlett respectively.

And that's got nothing to do with Simpson's possible report, and everything to do with his 59% disposal efficiency and 6 clangers.

Just putting it out there, but people suggesting that Cloke needs to be dropped must have rocks in their head.

Some people have NFI. There is absolutely no chance Cloke will be dropped. None. Zero. Nada. Get it?

Jacobs and Kreuzer doing well in the ruck will have absolutely no bearing on Cloke's spot in the team.

Laughable.

Said what I wanted to say (but more emphatically :)).

Cloke didn't have a great game last night, but he is quality.

simspon will not be dropped
yes his kicking let him down last night
but you don't drop one of your best players because they had a bad night
which simpson didnt
i thought he still played ok

I think he is a chance to be dropped..

Walker is faster and fitter.... Walker is generally not used as a step-ladder (2 instances where Simpson was too easily made the step ladder in marks last night), Walker generally makes opponents his step-ladder.

Both are equally as good with their kicking and handball and tenacity.

All in all Walker is fitter, faster, stronger and can take a mark.

Do you have any idea at all? Players that play different roles dont just get dropped to make way for someone else. If we are gonna make silly suggestions then why not drop Jacobs and bring in Walker, we go in without a ruckman but surely Walker is better than a rookie with 1 games experience?

Make some sense at least. Say something like, drop Russell and play Walker as a defensive half forward but dont just throw out silly prejudices from last season of all things. Go have a think about it. I am sure you can post better than that.

Well you clearly have no idea either. Drop Simpson? Thats all Australian Simpsons? Do you have a clue at all. Playmakers, creative types, the ones that move the ball into spaces to create oportunities often have the higher clanger rates because they are risk takers. Risk takers are essential to a side remaining unpredictable and dangerous.

If we weren't looking to increase our depth by rotating younger players through the team early in the season, how do you explain the four rookies last night? I agree that players are rewarded with spots after showing endeavour, but I smell a long-term plan with this year's finals in mind. It makes sense that you'd explore the worth of the whole list by throwing them into games where it means more than the NAB Cup. That means you've got more options to cover injury, counter specific opposition strengths, and become multi-dimensional to make it harder to get shut down.
