Changes for Round 2 v Brisbane

Cloke has as much chance as being dropped as I have being selected. None!!!!

He's our CHF now, doing well and the reason he's there's is to provide another target we never used to have and has a physical presence we haven't had the for ages.

Agreed. I've been a Cloke basher in the past, but I actually think he's gone past his brother now. His presence as a strong CHF pushing up the ground can't be taken for granted. He's important for our structure as it allows Waite to shine down back and Kreuzer to play in the midfield.

I have just one change this week: Walker IN, Garlett OUT. And that one change is probably one too many IMO.

We made a statement when we picked four debutants, putting the whole list on notice. I wouldn't now want to be soft and safe like Richmond were in their team selection. I want every player chomping at the bits to play for this great team. If that means leaving out quality players than so be it. :thumbsu:

Watching Bris v Weagles last night the Weagles gave us a pretty good template on how to beat Bris, unfortunately they couldn't sustain it!

We should go in favourites for 1 thing to kick 9 out of your 14 goals for the game in 1 quarter just shows it was more of Weagles sleeping and feeling affects of the Brisbane climate and round 1 travel.

1. We have an extra 2 days rest
2. We don't have to travel
3. We beat them last time at home and we've come of a huge win so mentally we should have a slight edge.

I'm not saying it's going to be a walk-over but we have to get Brisbane to play defensively for the game, for when they attack their 3rd quarter showed enough. And so we must have pace in our team so....

Garlett - his pace and X-factor could be valuable
Armfield - pace again and strong terrier attitude
Walker - pace and attack

I think Garlett will hold his spot as having both him and Eddie playing together can be a handful for teams to cover (plus Garlett and Yarran have made Eddie a better player - competition).

I think we'll see Walker in as Walker for his first game back will be an ideal tagger plus also can get some of the pill himself.

I also think Simpson is a chance to miss (suspension or form/skills ) with Grigg/Armfield taking his spot. For mine

Joseph out -> Walker in
Simpson out -> Armfield in

B: Thornton Jamison Grigg
HB: Bower Waite Johnson
C: Simpson Hadley Gibbs
R: Kreuzer Judd Murphy
HF: Houlihan Cloke Walker
F: Betts Fevola Wiggins

I/C: Scotland Robinson Jacobs Russell

In: Walker Grigg (if fit)
Out: Garlett Joseph

The biggest positive is Jamison, Betts, Robinson, Johnson and Hadley have been added to the team that beat Brisbane at home.

Russell>Johnstone
Grigg>Hooper
Robinson>MacDonald
Murphy>Rich
Gibbs>Power
Judd>Black
Johnson>Sherman
Jamison>Bradshaw
Thornton>Brown
Bower>Clark

Waite can be a dangerous swingman again if Thornton, Jamison and Bower hold their opponents.

Kreuzer v Leuenberger will be a great contest.

Bower will go for Grigg
Russell will go for Walker
and maybe Jacobs will go Hampson

Unless he is injured, Bower is not going to be dropped from the starting 18.

I dont think that they will drop Russell for 1AW... While he had a couple of misfires Thursday night, you would have to consider dropping most of the team if that was the only reason.

Jacobs played a blinder in the ruck. Once again the only reason they would drop him would be to rotate the ruckmen so that no-one gets burnt out over the course of the season. And you definitely wouldnt be starting the rotation after week 1.

If Simmo gets rubbed out, then I see Grigga coming in instead. If he doesnt, then Garlett might be dropped back to the emergencies. But thats a pretty rough deal for the young fella and he deserves at least another week playing in the big league.

Too many variables at this point to know who is going to be sitting out next week and who isnt.

Lets wait until after the tribunal and start really debating it.

Hard to know which way the club will go here, given that both Grigg and Walker would be pretty close to selection. I'd like to leave AJ in, as I really think he could be a good matchup for Hooper. Johnson might be in the gun also, but I like his kicking off HB, and we need to persist. Just need to find a better match up for him.

I think between Jamison, Waite, Bower and Thornton, we should be able to find the right matchup for Brown and Bradshaw. And, we obviously can't tag all of Brisbane's midfield, but you'd think both Hadley and Russell will get a job.

On what I saw last night, we should be too strong for the Lions, and would think we'd win by about 20 points.

Given that we won by so much on Thursday night, I think we might go in in an un-changed lineup.

Grigg and Walker should both come in if they are fit.

Not sure who you can take out of a team that won by 83 points but think maybe Joseph and Garlett will be the unlucky ones.

The only one I can think of is Joseph. Dosen't deserve to be but may have to make way.
Otherwise I can see who will make way.
Question. How does Yarran get into that team?????
Maybe Garlett will start to drop of later in the year because he is so young and slightly built??

I was waiting for a comment on Yarran!!!! I thought he would be in ahead of a couple of others and even have him on the bench in my dreamteam.... Is he gonna play at all?????

He will play when he is ready.

He has the talent but needs to gain fitness and show a real desire to play.

No harm him not playing much this year, it will only make him more hungrier for 2010.

Be interesting to hear Bullants match reports.

The only way Simpson will miss is suspension. His form was damn good even if his disposal was a bit rusty first up. No chance of him being dropped.

Johnson won't be replaced by Walker due to the role that Johnson plays. Johnson has fantastic skills and will be used for kick-outs and the go-to man when coming out of defence whereas Walker can play defence better, but has horrible kicking skills. You need players like Johnson to pin-point targets through the oppositions rolling zone.

Two different players that won't be substituted for one another.

FWIW, I dont think any players outside the 22 that fielded Thursday night are walk-up starts other than Stevens, so I dont think any changes will be made. Although come Round 3 depending on injuries, performance in Round 2, form in the 2's, etc we will start to see players like Grigg, Carrazzo and Walker come back into the team.

you make some valid points, but he must be able to defend first, then use his skills...pinpointing passes is terrific, but having your forward spank you isn't.
Perhaps he's better suited to being the loose man in defence as oppossed to being responsible for a forward.

Read that Yarran played a half and kicked two great goals, but lacked intensity and didn't re-appear in the second half.

Might be carrying an injury if that's the case.

Yarran is just 18 and moved to a new state, so he needs more time to put it all together and play AFL.

Reports on the Bullant's game are saying about 2 kicks for a couple of very good goals. No chasing/defensive pressure. Not seen after half time - either on the field or on the bench. Why, I don't know.

Russell out - grigg in
Joseph out - walker in
Yarran out - Rich in

Completely agree, i have no doubt he will be a gun.

I am sure the club will manage him in the best possible way :thumbsu:

Reports that Walker played in a Bullies practice match against Coburg this weekend and was a standout. Yarran was quiet, even though he kicked a couple of "loverly goals".

Walker would have to come in if he is "in form" - probably to replace Joseph or Garlett

Walker kicked 3 goals from a wing :thumbsu:

Hope we dont drop AJ, we should play him on Travis Johnstone who always has huge possesion games against us.

In so many ways I hope we don't drop him either but at the same time I'll understand if he does get dropped to make way.

Garlett will make way for Walker you'd reckon. Nothing against Garlo, but Walker is ... well Walker!

Grigga ... for either Johnson or Joseph I reckon, but I think they'll stick with Johnson for a fair few games on the trot. Awesome kick on him, not so great in the defensive aspect.

if you look at brisbanes forward set up. we have the defender to shut down brown and bradshaw with waite and jamison or thornton and bower. the problem i have is johnstone and hooper. i think joseph would be a good match up for hooper but i think grigg would be the best match for johnstone. on the other side we need to stretch there defence fev would be a handful for merrett and cloke shouldn't have any problems with patfull or macdonald (could be the week cloke kicks 6). brisbane have a lot of trouble with small forward so i wouldn't drop garlett and with betts, robinson, houlihan and maybe add yarran (if ready) we could boost our already high %

the players i would drop from our team would be russell and wiggins. i would bring in walker until he is 110% fit and if he is fit maybe look at johnson (who imo was great on the weekend) or leave out yarran and rotate walker throw the midfield and forward line.

Cant drop Johnson all year unless he is shockingly bad... I thought he played well, did a few really good things and did just about every kick out to perfection. Cant afford to drop someone who is such a good kick either.

Only 1 change I would bring Grigg in for Russell who continues to frustrate by making basic skill errors, poor football decisions, letting the opposition walk past him without a whimper and he gives up chasing at the drop of a hat. Call me an arse clown if you like for saying it. The vision of him running outside the boundary line just inside the fence last year when 'chasing' is imbedded in my mind.

Agree with this.

And how can anyone suggest joseph or garlett get dropped? These new players with leg speed are a big part of the improvement curve, we have to stick with them whilst they are doing the job.

Having said that, when stevens comes back I think johnson is next in line. Yes I watched the replay I think he got made to look silly in the 3rd qtr I don't know where others get the idea he stepped up.
