Turner to Saad ? one of their main rebounders, also someone close to Docherty so he doesn't get too many uncontested marks.
Turner to Saad. Goater to Docherty.

Shut those two out of the game and their engine won’t be able to get near it.

We will try to return to and test the high zone that was doing so well in the first two games suffocating the oppositions run. We will have to be tighter as Carlton have lasers coming out of the back half.

I think all is fair in love and war just thinking about whether I should put some sought of curse on the Blues this week to even it up a bit. I received a buy 1 get 1 free curse with my JHF one . Perhaps I should keep it for another time like this yrs GF lol
Blues not worth it. Save it for *, Sydney or Port.

Win the midfield battle and most likely we win the game. The forwards back debate is all peripheral. Clarko should be able to structure a defence no matter the cattle but it will break no matter who is playing in it if it keeps coming in with no pressure
Yep. Shut the middle down with good defensive structure like in rounds 1-2 and we are in for a chance. Our mids need to wipe the floor with the blues midfielders, Larkey needs to fire, Chom needs to break skulls and Zurhaar needs to kick a couple if we are any chance.

The good thing is we are massive underdogs so it’s Carlton’s to lose at this point! Go Roos!

Whispers Sam Walsh might be back for the Blues.

i don’t think mitch really threw any curve balls at us though, hawthorn just played smart uncontested footy and we weren’t accountable and left players free all over the ground for the full four quarters.

Backline was one thing, probably predictable.

But he changed the way they'd played all season so far, going short and wide avoiding the corridor, which we set up to defend. Also lack of a KPF was something they exploited (and I wish we'd have done it more over the last few years.) After all the talk in the media and Kingy giving it them over their ball use during the week we, well Clarko, should have seen it coming.

Clarko set up a zone defence to combat Hawthorn's previously fast corridor attacking approach. But Mitchell clearly told his troops to move the ball slowly around the wings, chipping it around and proritising accuracy rather than speed. It was a curve ball. And he won't be able to pull it off again for as long as he did
LOL - snap.

I honestly had a feeling he'd try something like that. clarko should have too, tho he's probably focusing on us developing our game not the specifics of this game.

Wonder if Clarko will tweak the game plan a bit and try not to give their forwards space to lead into. Reckon we have to play a lot slower, like we did against Freo, because if we turn it over in transition their tall forwards will have a field day.

Clarkson had a really poor day against the Hawks...

i. Persisting with the corridor defense for 2.5 quarters before adapting
ii. Went in with a far too one-paced midfield group
iii. Moved Howe back which came at the expense of Sheezel in the first half (Sam Mitchell must have thought it was Christmas when Howe was taking kick outs, when he was considering tagging Sheezel)

ii. & iii. could have been somewhat addressed pre game.

He just cannot afford to make those mistakes against Carlton this week or it's going to get messy. Thankfully ii. will be addressed with Simpkin & LDU returning.

I don't want to see iii. ever, ever again. If Howe plays, play him in a defensive wing role.

So much of what Carlton want to do is based around winning clearance & contested possession. Our midfield needs to be on the top of its game for us to stand a chance.

We also can't afford to not play Dawson. Bonar on McKay would be sending lambs to the slaughter if we don't dominate clearance & contested possession.

As Kingy always says, don't get beaten by what you know, Alastair.

Looks like another long Good Friday game.

if we had both Mackay and Login we had a chance, I was optimistic with just Login
unless the mids can have a blinder we are in trouble, I can hear the media now “ North shouldn’t have Good Friday “ Caro will
go nuts.
Login ... I don't mind it actually.

The Blues will be forced into a couple of changes, with Matt Owies hurting his hamstring in the early stages of last week's win over the Giants and with Blake Acres suspended for round four. Lochie O'Brien has been the sub in each of the team's first three games and would be a natural wing replacement for Acres, while Matt Kennedy is a chance to return from a calf injury and could be the man to come in for Owies. The versatile Jack Martin is recovering from his own calf complaint and could be another option, while Paddy Dow was again strong at VFL level and finished with 28 disposals last weekend. - Riley Beveridge

R3 sub: Lochie O’Brien (replaced Matt Owies)

The Kangaroos should get some much-needed midfield support, with Jy Simpkin back from suspension and with Luke Davies-Uniacke expected to recover from a minor calf complaint. However, key defender Griffin Logue is suspended while Ben McKay won't return in time from a foot problem. It will give the Kangas a headache down back ahead of a meeting with the last two Coleman Medal winners in Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay. Expect the Curnow match-up to be given to Aidan Bonar, who is likely to return to the side after 17 disposals and eight marks at VFL level last week. He looms as the most likely replacement for Logue, with Kallan Dawson also earmarked as a potential inclusion. Darcy Tucker should be in the starting 22 after an impressive cameo as the sub last week. Last year's No.4 pick George Wardlaw continues to close on an AFL debut, impressing again in his ongoing conditioning block with 24 disposals at VFL level last Saturday. - Riley Beveridge

Bonar can’t possibly be given the matchup on Curnow. Is giving up 6cm and 8kg. I’d play Dawson and Bonar and give first crack to Dawson purely based off height and weight. At the very least he can provide a contest, we all know neither are going to have much success.

We recruited Log specifically for this matchup, but the Ivory Tower had other ideas.

We’re going to be extremely exposed down back so hopefully Clarko has a cluster in mind to nullify some of it . Jack needs to be sitting in the hole to force Curnow and McKay wide.

Prefer McKay shanking 45m snaps from the boundary instead of kicking them from the goal square.

Dawson Corr Ziebell - Dawson is that bit taller than Bonar. But I liked Bonar’s 2nd half in the Twos last week.

Stevo Comben Powell
Zurharr Larkey Curtis

Goldy Cunners Simpkin
Greenwood Turner Taylor Bergman

Emg: Tucker
Out- Griff, Will, Howe, Tucker

VFL: some good ins

Archer Bonar Young

It really was a fine piece of coaching from Sam Mitchell. This is essentially the same side that went 1-20 against professional teams last year, just with one of the greatest coaches of all time in charge. The first 2 rounds showed what we are capable of with clear directions in place. What happens when the opposition does something totally unexpected though? Well, it falls apart because now our competitive advantage is nullified. These kind of surprises are a minor problem for experienced and capable sides who can adapt on the run, but for us it's just about game over.

The good news is that nobody plays as distinct a game style as Hawthorn, so other teams don't have as much scope to try something like this.
