I had a look at the Round 1 game against the Cats last night. Cox, Beams, Langdon played. Our backs weren't the problem. Our forward line was hopeless. We had total control of the ball and won the tactical battle, but couldn't score from our plethora of 50 entries. Elliott, DeGoey and Stevo were all there too. It didn't help that we kept kicking behinds. I'd forgotten how we threw this game away.
I think pace will be the key.

I don’t remember much about that game, but looking at the stats, it looks like we were a bit flat in terms of midfield pressure given the low tackle count, and we only had 7 marks inside 50 to their 14 (which suggests we probably didn’t have many quick entries from turnovers).

We also had really poor rebound 50 to inside 50 conversion, so I’d say our ball movement in transition was pretty poor - as you suggested, speed is the key.

If we can out-hussle them at the coal face and move the ball quickly I think we’ll be okay.

Stats can be so misleading - not saying it was so in this case but if you have control of the ball for long periods of course you will have a low tackle count.
They can be, but it was well below our season average and we only marginally won the disposal count. I can’t really remember the game though as I said.

Outs Magden Noble Brown.
Ins we all know.
Smoky Reid in for WHE.
Moore Roughy down back .
Not a bad backline with
Maynard Roughy Shazz
Howe Moore Crisp
Greenwood 7th defender/tagger

Same here regarding remembering that particular case but I have serious problem with many of the stats which focus on isolated raw numbers with no contextural loading.

The DE stat in particular is a load of rubbish.

does Reid have to play to provide that contest in forward 50? i am thinking he may have to, I would hate for the likes of Taylor, Stewart and Blicavs to pick everything off.

Did Reid look good last night?

Not sure about Reid or the need for him

We should select our best 22 based on who our best 22 is. Selecting on matchups basis is fraught with danger and playing into the oppositions hands.

In Round 1 even Chris Scott admitted they were lucky to get away with that game as they should have been blown away in the 2nd quarter.

We played like ass, lost by only 7 points and should have won easily.

Our forward line was mostly dysfunctional as hell that night. The moment De Goey did that bizarre hesitation, look for a handball despite being in front of an open goal and fluff it thing, I knew it wasn't out night

We were very wasteful in that game, especially from the end of the first quarter until half time. We should have been further in front at the break.

And to make things worse I remember them getting crucial back to back goals to turn the momentum from umpire blunders / BS head high free kicks. One of them in particular I think was absurd where Varcoe went to bump, got nowhere near Selwood’s head and got penalised for a head high, which then lead to a goal (yes you can tell I was traumatised by it).

To be fair to Geelong they did play really strongly in the second half and caught up in all stats so much so that they ended up with 10 more inside 50s despite our first half dominance.

Our team was a bit flat and down that day which plenty attributed to the fact our season prior was longer than Geelong’s. Thing is, Chris Scott has had a knack for blocking our ball movement in the past couple of years and we haven’t been able to play our game against them regardless, resulting in really slow and dour games. It remains to be seen if that negative style is a viable strategy in finals. If our onballers break even, you can bet Grundy will get on top and we’ll be able to break their defensive systems with the dynamic forward line we’re shaping up. But the clearance battle is going to be hot, Dangerfield inside and Kelly inside/outside have had better chemistry/potency than our midfield all year.

What gives me hope is that the past couple of games our midfield has looked more and more cohesive, with Grundy/Pendles/Treloar/Adams all hitting great form. And we all know that Sidey is capable of lifting in finals if he isn’t tagged!

I understand Geelong's frustration at not getting home finals. It would annoy me if the shoe was on the other foot. I think it's also largely fed by club anxiety at their poor recent finals record. Which psycologically is bad for them and good for us.

They're on a hiding to nothing though. It's an AFL decision driven by revenue and that will always win out. There would also be strong backlash from opposition fans missing out on tickets. They're ground simply isn't big enough given the demand during finals. If they want that home game they need to increase the size of their stadium.

Why should they get a home final? They get a massive advantage during the season. When they play one of the big clubs it must always be at the G.

They finished 1st and that makes it their home game. Their home ground is Kardinia Park.

Don't paint me on one side of the argument either way because I can see both sides. Ultimately the commercial interests will win. There are also the opposition fans (us this week) who will get to attend the game live and that's a good thing. Access for all fans is important.

I can just see why they're sore about it. I personally don't think the HnA advantage argument is very compelling.

Geelong always plays Collingwood at the MCG. Don’t think we have played in Geelong since 1999.

They are a Victorian team. Finals get played at the G.

The only change in the midfield that can possibly have changed that dynamic is the introduction of Wills. It is the only factor which has changed.

Only partly I would say.

Wills’ tackling and defensive mindset at stoppages has helped. But he does play the least minutes out of anyone on the ground and doesn’t have as much impact on the overall game than you seem to suggest.

It’s a whole. Adams has been building back from injury and Treloar is being more impactful. And our rotations are working better with Sidey and Pendles spending more time forward.

That said I wouldn’t take Wills out for finals. At this stage I’m thinking:

OUT: Madgen, Noble, Varcoe
IN: Moore, De Goey, Stephenson

Varcoe unlucky because JT has had two very good last couple of games, but you could just as well go the other way for experience instead.

Moore already is in the team.
Sidebottom to come in..

I still think people underestimate how important Adams is to our side

Treloar loves him in the side as it frees him up to use his pace on the outside

Adams is a Bull
