Our inside 50 is far too crowded. Should be 2 talls and 2 smalls at any one time. Giving the talls plenty of space in front to lead to and giving the smalls plenty of space to find space if it spills.
If they don't bother following our forwards up the ground there is nothing we can do about the outnumber. We probably need to hurt them more for not doing it. Having some players that can kick from a distance is one way.

Our slow build up chip it around game plan gives the opposition too much time to flood back.

It also exposes our KPF weakness.

Need to start taking more risks through the corridor.

That's the key point. We can handle a flood if our talls can take a contested mark.

Talls outside of defenders who took a contested mark in the first two rounds:
Taberner - 2 (1/1)
Darcy - 1
Fyfe - 1
Amiss - 1

Now if we include all marks, but still only non defender talls:
Taberner - 8 (4/4)
Amiss - 2
Jackson - 1
Darcy - 6 (5/1)
Fyfe - 7

Those aren't averages. Those are totals.

Our highest tally player for marks inside fifty: Liam Henry, Switkowski

Duh, we're not taking the risks through the corridor because that's being blocked off too and our lack of talent up forward exacerbates the situation. The opposition don't just flood our forward line as soon as we get it in defence, they just flood within kicking distance and move back as we move the ball forward. They (the opposition) know what we'd like to do i.e. take it through the corridor and are setting up for it.

JL giving Luke Ryan coach's votes just shows how out of touch with the modern game we are as a club.

Either that or Clarkson is just trolling us. Fair dinkum.
I have to admit I thought Ryan was very good defensively both weeks and I understand him getting votes

We have tried the kick into the corridor but they've been chopped off and then we are defending against the opposition charging their attacking fifty arc without any structure.

I'd like to see Jackson in the middle of the ground and I'd like to see him either drawing a tall opponent or taking a mark.

All this talk about flooding our forward line because of our slow ball movement ... but I don't see any comments on what I witnessed at the game ... our entire side going on the defensive side of the centre circle at every opportunity they could. Clearly under instruction.

It was the norm for any passage of "non-fast play" where North had moved forward. When we get the ball back, it is little wonder it is so hard to move the ball. Half of North's work has already been done by our own players. We also have nobody inside the forward 50 if there was some kind of miraculous passage of play that carved through the horde of numbers.

It was maddening to watch. Collingwood hold forwards back inside 50 (or at least near the 50) at all times. Their opponents have to man them up. And then continue to hold their ground until the ball is in range. Creates space to pass and run the ball from the backline. Such a simple tactic that seems to have escaped the brains trust at Freo.

Great intercept mark. Total liability with ball in hand.

He’ll be basically undroppable from the coach’s POV but he’s absolutely a massive part of why we lost both matches. No one in the AFL is slower at moving the ball.

The worst thing about it is he can actually kick when he tries to more attacking - he almost never takes risks with his disposal.

Dropping someone that’s ‘undroppable’ and publicly stating it’s because they don’t move the ball quick enough is exactly what we need. Doesn’t have to be Ryan but I can’t see anything changing until the majority of the side genuinely feels like they’re playing for their spot.

What’s the odds we see no changes other than Walters into the starting 22 though? (obviously has to happen, but it’s a bit of thoughtless change it’s so obvious tbh)

NOD for Hughes
Sturt for Taberner
Walker for Wilson
Walters maybe for Banfield/Amiss I'd prefer to keep Amiss in

Ryan Cox Chapman
Young Pearce Clark
NOD Brayshaw Aish
Switkowski Sturt Jackson
Schultz Amiss Walters

Darcy Jaeger Serong
Henry Walker Brodie Frederick

Brodie on thin ice and maybe the sub with Johnson to come in

I’m tipping the Toast!
By some margin too!
Probs be the same as Nth, where they get away and we try like shit to get back in to it.
This team isn't going to win until GC in Adelaide

The moment below is when I knew we were in for a dour afternoon and nothing much would change. Because if you can't take the game on in the early stages when you should have come out with a strong message to do so, then you never will.

Ryan had just looked straight at Clark and decided, nup, not going to kick it there. Just turned and bombed the ball down the boundary line. To be fair, this would be JL driving this sort of play. Went out of bounds. From which we actually got a shot on goal (that Freddy missed from the boundary line) from the stoppage. JL would have been well satisfied by the outcome. Good play son, I'll give you some votes today.

I wouldn't want the likes of Pearce or Hughes trying this kick, but Ryan is more than capable of putting it in a spot where Clark can get it and run away in space. It is a kick that Noble or Daicos would take 10 times out of 10 and execute probably 8 or 9 times out of ten. They don't give a shit about the 1 or 2 times it might be misdirected and cost a goal, as there is a greater chance of it creating a score.

Pretty obvious he should have put it here:

Correct me if I'm wrong but Clark could easily run onto that and then it's a straight shoot up the corridor? Hard for the North player to defend because he has to double back to get there and we have support just outside the 50 arc.

How you so certain it was Ryan's own poor decision making lol

If he was skilled enough to make the kick.

I’d even be interested in moving Young somewhere up around the ball. Wing…midfield around stoppages. He’s no slower than Pendlebury
Nah his intercept marking is elite and much needed out back. I would at least wait for him to get an AA before considering moving him. Best best would be to debut Johno on the wing to fast forward his development.

we need something.

have to get the ballin our hands and moving quicker

IN: Walters - Add Class
Sturt - Class
Johnson - Skills, size. He can start on the wing instead of Hughes
NOD - Better wing than Henry, plus his goal kicking is very handy

Out:

Banfield - Should not near the AFL side
Taberner - Not sure what is up with him this year, struggling to run out games.
Henry - He is too outside, not to have elite skills
Hughes - Need more attack. Not more defense
Yes Sturt the 4 game veteran of AFL adds plenty of class.

Yep. If you fast forward, there is essentially 20-30m of grass in front of Clark (nobody until well into the centre square). Clark even looks up field to check, so he knows his surroundings. Aish in the bottom right has a player loosely trailing him who may have closed a bit of that down. I'm sure some other North players around. But then you just draw them and start a running chain/overlap handball and drive it up the guts.
