I'd say Vardy's ruckwork this year has been pretty good given he's almost always played primarily forward.

Giles' ruckwork has been okay too.

See, we've actually done pretty well to make up for the loss of NN's rucking - those two have been decent in that respect. What has happened, though, is that the whole midfield looks slow without him. I kept thinking to myself on the weekend that we forgot just how fast the bloke is - we are struggling for the contrast he offers when running through the midfield (especially when the ball is in the hands of the opposition and the implied pressure he brings).

I think Vardy and Giles have both been good relative to what's expected of them. Same can't be said for a fair few others.

Darling is not the best below the knees.

Schofield would be a better option same height as Petrie.

Can add a bit of pace through the midfield he was once a wingman after all.

I'm having flash backs of the North game where I actually Lol seeing Darling go against Goldstein
True but it's his second efforts and tackling that would kinda be a plus. Sydney are great contested side and darling size and precebse should help us lock the ball in. I still want schoey and those two should split the secondary ruck duties. Imo darling getting his hands on the ball and applying some strong tackles in the middle should help his confidence and it could possibly get him going up forward. He just looks totally out of confidence atm.

True but I think he should go up against Sinclair who isn't a great tap ruckman. Yeah I saw him lining up on Goldy. He did have one good play where the ball came towards his way but he was able to keep Goldy off it and tapped it to Yeo who busted his way through congestion and offloaded it to hill for a goal.

Shep is getting by without offering us much. Don't want him dropped but needs to lift. He will have some serious pressure soon when coaches believe that Franky is ready.

Was there much in Darlings ankle problem at the start of the game?

Might explain the lack of second efforts and run?
Lol didn't realised he got hurt. Tbh I only watched bits and pieces of the first half and watched the second half on my phone at a mates house.

12 months ago he was arguably our best forward and was in the form of his life. Just needs that to return and hopefully stay for the remainder of the season.

If darling is rested, he should be made to prove his fitness by playing for ep. It should send a subtle hint to him.

A good reasoned post, but to me the manner of last weeks loss was predictable and a well worn path for this squad. So while you are probably right in terms of meeting this weeks challenge, IMO we need to look at the bigger picture in terms of finding an outfit that can challenge teams on the big stage.

Classic example is Masten. A reasonable fortnight then right on cue he shits the bed. So predictable as he does it every time. So in my mind you f..k him right off now and even if you do lose a tiny bit in the short term - play the likes of Watson, Sheed, Mutimer, Partington, Cole and Duggan. Its the only way to improve.

I think we should give Partington, Duggan or Sheed and get rid of Giles and Hutchings. At least Duggan has good foot skills and SHeed provides some grunt.

Yeah I reckon we would have won with Naitanui, not because of his rucking, but because of his amazing hard ball gets and defensive pressure.

Seriously, Naitanui does SO MUCH to paper over the cracks in our midfield. Taps to advantage like no other. Hard ball gets. Our best at chasing and tackling hard.

He's like a dominant ruck plus a defensive inside mid rolled into one.

It's sad to think that we may not have capitalised on how uniquely awesome he is.

Midfielder Dom Sheed put the disappointment of being axed behind him, amassing a game-high 37 disposals, eight tackles, seven inside 50s and kicking a goal in East Perth's 36-point loss.

Defender Eric Mackenzie (21 possessions) remained composed down back by taking several intercept marks, while draftee Daniel Venables (13 possessions, two goals) continued to impress in his second WAFL appearance.

I def think Daniel Venables & Dom Sheed need to be in. Give them a go they will go better than Giles and Hutch.

Is very sad to think this. We miss his presence immensely.

Nelson named twice. Hnnngggg

Darling rucking is just stupid

Yes and I understand the suggestion was just too pinch hit etc But you might aswell not have a Ruckman because he won't be pinch hitting anything at 191 cm. Maybe going third man up but that's not allowed so how's he even going to be competitive ? I don't think doing this helps his form or confidence and I thought we were over the whole Darling to the Midfield thing......
Darling pinch hitting actually isn't that bad. He has been in a number of ruck contests and he has been good. I have been surprised at his body work given the height he gives up. He has actually won a few hitouts and in others has halved the contest and has been first to the ground ball. Pretty sure they threw him in the last couple of games last year and he has certainly rucked a few times this year. He has been more effective than Gov in the ruck that's for sure.

The rucks are a really shit situation. On the one hand we are slow and too tall, thats clear.

Alan Richardson was on sen last Friday and he made a point that the 3rd rule up is making ruck contests more predictable. He noted that midfielder with confidence of the ruckman winning the tap have more aggressive running patterns at a stoppage, so when they win the tap they can really hurt opposition.

Insert darling, Schofield etc and it can have repercussions. Its a shit situation and I'm not sure what the right answer is, I'm so gutted we have no nicnat this year.

One way we can improve our speed is getting the midfield balance right. I like the calls for mutimer and sheed and would add duggan. We really need more run. Enough with the likes of redden and hutchings, were not winning a premiership with these blokes.

It's different now there is no third up.

It was designed to give genuine Ruckman more chance etc

I don't mind if he has a go every now and then in the forward line, hell I have even seen shuey do that before

Simmo on 7Sport saying that Jack Darling will be touch and go playing on Thursday , I reckon Jack will play sometimes its not as bad as it seems sometimes and we need him to play against a hungry and good opposition .

Sam Mitchell will play , Simmo says that Mitchell will tell him if he is not right and as yet he has said nothing about not playing .:$
