I could be mistaken but I thought Docherty's dad passed away a few years back? Isn't it his uncle who was sick? Either way if that is the reason he had to come back to Melbourne then so be it, I'm not one to pass judgement on that sort of thing.

However if this was the case I don't see why he had to nominate Carlton and only Carlton as the club he wanted to go to, thus ensuring we were bent over the barrel by them. Surely anywhere in Victoria would have sufficed if the circumstances were that dire.

My mum could play for Carlton and I'd boo her. Doc shouldn't take it too personally.

Your mum probably could play for Carlton at the moment.

Maybe just a banner "Sam-Mum called, wants you home by midnight"

That's actually quite clever.

Not sure about the whole hands off 'he's had a hard time' thing.
The implication then is, it would be alright to boo someone whose background we're unaware of?

No it isn't.

We never know everything about those we judge. Every time we cheer or boo or pass judgement in some other way we base it on what we do know.

Will people be booing Lachlan Henderson? I hope not. Did we boo Luke Power and Daniel Bradshaw? I can't remember. I definitely used to boo Alastair Lynch, even after the merger, because he left FITZROY. Back in the day, I booed Warwick Irwin when he went to Collingwood, but I unbooed him when he came back. I also booed and unbooed Leigh Carlson in the one season. I never booed Akermanis, but I booed Sam Sheldon because he was a spud and I booed Travis Johnstone because while he had silky skills, he wouldn't RUN when we needed him to. I occasionally booed Michael Voss when he was coaching, but I am increasingly feeling that I should unboo him a little. I've never booed Marc Murphy, but I booed his dad when he left FITZROY because he went to South Melbourne and I booed him even louder when he went to Nth Melbourne. I would have booed Kevin Murray when he left FITZROY to go to East Perth in 1965, but I was too young to know what was going on and I'm kind of glad I didn't, because he came back, played another 167 games and won on a Brownlow. Just goes to show that sometimes it is better not to boo. The other thing is that in the modern game there are so many players to boo that you could do yourself a mischief. After Broderick, Dundas, Gale, Elliott and Baldwin all left FITZROY at once to play at Richmond I booed so much at the MCG one day that I couldn't speak for a week. When I got my voice back, I lost it again because I went to a FITZROY game and saw Jeff Hogg play.

That was a good read, surprisingly. haha

We had a few boo-able players back then; McCarthy, Sartori, Dwyer and the list went on.
My word we did, but they used to try their guts out. Just not enough class. One player who proved the booers wrong was Peter Caven, who left FITZROY and ended up winning two Premierships at Adelaide, after a stint at Sydney. The transition from whipping boy to dual Premiership winner is one of the most remarkable comebacks in football, particularly as Tony Lockett nearly knocked his head off one day. I've got a copy of a FITZROY v Carlton game in 1992 where he absolutely murders Stephen Kernahan, to the point that they move Kernahan to centre half back just to get him away from Caven. I never booed Peter Caven.

Yeah, remember all of that. Didn't boo Alastair Lynch. He was offered a 10 year contract on unbelievable money. I couldn't blame him...He really had no choice. Fitzroy had no way of matching the offer.

In hindsight it's hard to blame any of them. Particularly after everyone saw what was done to Gary Pert. There was no doubt that other clubs offered more financial stability.
Absolutely! I would never boo Gary Pert or Paul Roos for the same reason. I didn't boo Matt Rendell either when he went to the Brisbane Bears. I did boo Scott McIvor when he left FITZROY to play for the Brisbane Bears even after the merger. Booing him was a hard habit to break. Luckily for my throat he only had a season at the Brisbane Lions and to be honest, I really don't like booing our own players.

I'm confused then.
So, it is ok to barrack against players if we don't know their personal background, but not ok if we do (and if they have had some hardship)?
Or are you saying that it is never ok to barrack against an individual? That would seem unfooty like.
If the first statement is correct, that we can boo someone because we are ignorant of their personal situation, that seems to contradict the caring nature of the second part of that equation.
I am not inclined to boo players traded out at the club's choice, but care little for those who asked to leave.

What we know about young Sam, is that he didn't want to play for us anymore and instead chose a horrible team instead.
Whilst he may have had some horrible personal tragedy that influenced that decision, I don't recall him stating that tragedy as the total reason for wanting out. If he did say that, I probably wouldn't believe him.
Personally, I won't 'boo" him just because he left. Frankly, I just didn't rate him all that highly and business is business and I'm very much over it. I just don't care. I won't be appalled either if others choose to and in fact am very much okay for him to feel some anger from the Gabba crowd. A bit like players stepping onto the ground and having a bit of whiteline fever, on a personal level (though I don't know players personally) I wish them all the best, but as soon as they are at work as an opposition player, game on.

I was perfectly clear. Disingenuously claiming confusion demeans us both.

We never know everything. We make judgements based on what we do know. This is always the case. I hate having to repeat myself, Skoob.

I don't have any more insight into Docherty's motivations than anyone else, but I can think of plenty of reasons why he wouldn't want to publicly talk about the terminal illness of a close relative.

I'm glad you won't boo him. I'm disappointed you don't think his personal circumstances are relevant, if I understand you correctly.

I am interesting to hear whether people think there is a chance that Zac O'Brien might get a chance in the senior team in this half of the season. Does he need to be promoted from rookie first? If so, McGuane's injury would seem to provide the opportunity to do so. I only seem to hear positives about him from the regular NEAFL watchers. Or is he a bit like some players we already have in the senior team, without enough of a point of difference. He is older than the average rookie so you would think he is more likely to handle the physical aspects of the top level. I would like to see him get a start at some point just to see what he can offer us. I suppose, though that it really just means another inexperienced player in the team. But if a younger guy needs a rest, maybe O'Brien would get a look in.
