Newbie here, but after watching round 1 we desperately need hard ball gets in the midfield. Its been missing for some time. Horne-Francis exposed this gaping hole in our mids. Why they didn't make the change to throw Rayner in there is beyond me! No offence to the finesse of Neale, Dunkley, McLuggage and Ashcroft, they all have some skill and probably have what it takes to negate one Oliver. But with Gawn having the upper hand over the big O we absolutely need a Zorko or a Rayner in the mix. Demons mids hit the ball hard. Based on what Horne-Francis did to us, Petracca will be unstoppable.

I think regardless if it's a disappointing season or not we need to upgrade our line coaches. Cam Bruce was midfield coach at Carlton when Carlton were rubbish so it beats me why we hired him in the first place. Adcock has had his time, I couldn't even tell ya who the other line coach is.

We've signed Fagan for another 2yrs, and I think he is probably one of the best man managers out there but he does lack a bit of strategy and tactical nouse. Because of that he's relying on his line coaches to provide that, and the line coaches aren't up to it. I think it's fine for a head coach to rely on his troops to a degree, but his troops have to provide quality feedback and alternatives.

Time will come when Fages tenure is up but let's get him some "A" grade assistants before it comes to that. It will improve the team, improve Fagan and improve our flag chances.

As for a replacement for Fages, when it's due, I think we will be needing a young exciting innovative coach to come on board. The only one I can think of atm, one that not only has the bones required but a real meaning to the club is McRae. Talk to him now, tell him we want him bad when his contract at the pies is up. Line him up for the future.

To me it makes a lot of sense to upgrade our assistants giving Fages better support, better coaching and better feedback. It also gives Fagans contract extension a chance to continue success, until we can poach Fly to take over without the need to rebuild.

I think it says a lot that many of our line coaches have been around since we were a basket case. We either just so happened to put together the best assistant coaching lineup in the league while everything else was going to shit or it is time for a shake up.

I thought they’d make that change sometime after half time. Rayner looks in form and lively which is exactly what the midfield needed yesterday to try and jump start it.

Having rayner behind the ball defending those entries when the midfield is getting smashed is pointless.

I don't know what we should do with the ruck situation. You're not bringing in Fort to help win the ruck, it'd be about load management for O going up against Grundy + Gawn. Otherwise stick to our plan and plan around losing the ruck contest, which is what will happen regardless of whether Fort plays. I personally think we are a better chance just playing O.
Knowing that no matter who we bring in we aren’t going to beat the Gawn/Grundy ruck combo IMO it makes more sense to look elsewhere. I would still bring Fort in but drop Oscar.

Or just Fort?

I would seriously think of bringing in Fort for Daniher. He just is not doing enough.

Rayner was the only one who turned up in the prelim too until he limped off. Hard to see a change this early in the season though.

I was a supporter of Rayner in the backline for the interim until yesterday. It's fine to have him running rings around the opposition down there when we're winning games and the others are doing their job.

Yesterday he was needed in the M/F

But of course if the midfield unit actually turned up and played as a midfield unit, Rayners importance in defence may have also been more noticeable.

I'd bring in Fort for Big O but ask Fort-Daniher-Hipwood to take turns at center bounces. One goes to center and other two stay in forward line. Out of the two staying in forward line, one stays at goal square and the other one leads out of F50. Leave the rest of the space for Gunston to work on. Also, for Christ sake, Just don't stand around and then dive on top of everyone's head spoiling a marking attempt from our own forward.

We need to invent more ruck depth from those on the field. Hipwood and Daniher did ruck during pre-season. There is no reason to stop now, just keep doing it. We might uncover something more, may be Hipwood could be a force at center bounces and we leave more space for Gunston to operate in forward line.

I think out backline has been crying out for a Luke Ryan type of player, Rayner could be that plus more. His impact can be replaced in the forward line, by all accounts he doesn’t have the tank to go in the middle, if he did it would be a no brained to play him there though, he stopped more than a couple of goals yesterday IMO.
Something is missing in our mix but it isn’t Rayner playing down back.

I think we need to look at what we can do with Hippy. He isn’t strong enough to be a key forward but he is a great athlete and maybe we need that somewhere else where he won’t be lining up on a strong key defender. Id love to trial him on a wing or something ala Richo in his last year or two.

Is Hipwood on a wing for periods too bizarre to think about ?

He'd benefit from not being tagged by a strong defender where he often gets out muscled. He's got some pace and is a beautiful kick on the run.

And here I was thinking it was a ridiculous suggestion. I love the idea of him on the wing. He could also push down to impact defensive contests with a spoil and get a get out of jail quick hack kick under pressure to his side.

In: Zorko, Joyce
Out: Tunstill, Coleman (concussion)

Joyce to go back in lieu of Rayner. Zorko to half back. Rayner to move onto the ball. I think we saw a player ready to break out yesterday but ultimately played a role for the team down back. He's shown a lot of development in the past three weeks in terms of winning uncontested footy all the while still excelling in winning contested ball.

I want us to start with Neale, Rayner and Dunkley on Friday night. It is time and he is ready.

I just think if we're going to continue to kick long down the line we at least need someone with the physical capacity to make a contest in the air. Especially if we're going to continue to play one ruck.

They've been a few experiments like this over the years that have worked for their teams. Richo almost won a Brownlow.

We finish round 1 in the bottom 4.
It doesn’t feel that bad with me, especially given most of my life the club has been in the bottom 4.

But now though given our season expectations, yeah it pretty much stinks :poo:

IMO Hippy would not have the tank to play a decent amount of time on the wing.
No doubt Mr.M.

But just in bursts to shake it up a bit. Hippy's a player who goes better when he's got space and some freedom. Might help him as well as us.

Or maybe just in the too hard basket.

I think we flagged pre season that if Tunstill and Wilmot were our main wingers we'd get creamed in that area and that's how it looked (to me) yesterday.

Of course they got zero help.

I don’t see mass changes helping us tbh. Probably bring in another tall down back and that’s about it. The loss yesterday was purely mental! Didn’t even show up to play 4 quarters.
Tunstill and Wilmott need to come out for Lyons and Madden at the very least. We need mature bodies and experienced players against Melbourne.

If fully fit I think our best wing options are Berry and Ah Chee, would not be against Hippy doing it for short periods as you say.

Not keen on bringing Lyons in. We need run and Lyons will not give us any of that.
