Is anyone else warming to McHenry?

I've been a critic but don't mind the bits and pieces he's put together this season
I was, but for me there was a long list of things he had to improve upon and I just don't see the improvement. He's not quick or as agile as a player of his diminutive size needs to be to survive in AFL. He still fumbles a lot probably because he's got tiny hands, and my pet hate is that often he holds up momentum after taking a mark or getting a free, hesitates and lets the first best option slip away. That said, he's a bit of a barometer. When he's kicking goals and picking up marks in the forward fifty or causing turnovers because of his manic buzzing around, the Crows are usually in full flight, but not so much because of Ned. He's a symptom rather than the cause.

No one could possibly question his ferocity at the ball and his harassment value nor the number of times he's in the thick of things getting down and dirty but Jeez there's just something annoyingly missing for mine.

The AFL seem to be over compensating for lack of concussion care previously by going over the top now
The horse has bolted for compensation claims.

Now suspending players where the tackled player doesn't even leave the ground.

At this rate there will be plenty rubbed out of the Brownlow... perhaps that is what Neale is thinking... ;)

If the AFL cared about head injuries they would stop rewarding dickheads for putting themselves in harms way.
It's a strange situation that Laird gets a week for not hurting a player and yet a player can smash the back of a players head with their knee. The way the game is heading I can see that soon you will need to jump straight up without using another player to mark a ball. In other sports such as F1 you don't see lawsuits for crashes resulting in deaths. Drivers know the risks just like players know the risks in regards to football. I think the league needs toughen the laws for players like mccartin who obviously have a susceptability to being concussed. These players must be made to retire much earlier when it's discovered they are susceptible to concussion. This would fix most of the concussion problems. Perhaps a compensation scheme could be setup for early retirements related to concussion.

I also think we need to get to the point where all players sign waivers that they except the risks of the game and if they are injured the club and league aren't responsible. If they don't sign they don't play. Sure make the game as safe as possible but you can't legislate all contact out of the game. It's impossible.

One last point. If the league valued player welfare which they don't they would decrease the amount of teams and decrease list sizes which would result in a pay increase of around 50%. The average wage would increase to around 600k which would then more accurately balance the risk v reward decision for playing football. The afl is killing the game by increasing the teams.

He fits the experience metric which the club highly values. Would be a dumb move but I wouldn't be surprised.

Its a tough one. Whether they have enough trust in Berry or Schoenberg to bring them in

Clearly they have faith in the older guys as a known quantity - Keays, Sloane, Crouch

Obviously they can run Soligo Rachele Pedlar Jones more through. Wouldn’t surprise at all if Parnell comes in and they shuffle the other guys and have Schoenberg as the sub

Massive game for the club - another “most important since 2017” as a win here sets us up for a massive show at finals.

I think we rotate Pedlar, Soligo, Hinge, Murphy, Jones, Rachele while having Dawson and one of Keays and Sloane in there. What about giving Murray a few bursts in there as well as a mobile ruck. Worth a look. We probably go for one of Berry, Schoenberg, or Hately as the sub as well.

No , not warming to him

Do think he’s the best sub we have though and if we are serious about winning games like we should be as never say never then we should be using him as sub close to 50% of the time

I'm not even sure how over compensating now will have any impact on ongoing claims.

Surely the most simple decision moving forward it to sign a waiver when a player is drafted. I don't even understand how the AFL is liable for a player who is willingly playing a contact sport. There are inherent risks of the occupation and that's that.

I think he got excessively shat on last year, people write these kids off so bloody quick here. Most of the guys from that draft are all improving quite a lot this year it's not just our own boys. Lukosius starting to show why drafted where he was, Jones we've seen really elevate, Butters has gone on even further, Blakey taking his game further, Rankine, well his steps forward are pretty huge too & yep even McHenry is taking some good steps forward with very limited opportunity.

I'm no lawyer but I reckon waivers aren't worth the paper they're written on. If you're negligent, you're negligent

i cannot see a place yet but I was very impressed with Cooks game on Friday night. He can still work on a few things but his run and carry and ability to break the lines was notable. He is also winning more of his own ball and he generally uses it pretty well.

I have generally liked Sholls performance this year but Cook is coming fast. He is a much improved player from 2022 and deserves a chance soon if his form keeps up
Yes, yes please

Many ways a waiver can be null. Coercion is one

'' if you dont sign you dont get a $300,000 contract''

If it was the Clam you were reading then yes probably excessive. In general everyone wrote him off because he was so average in his 4th year with no stand out features other than effort.

This year's he's just doing everything a bit better consistently. You could probably call him good enough to be playing AFL now just like Jones. Not sure how many games they'll both end up with though.

He's depth in our best team. In another side that doesn't have our upside he's definitely best 22 and that's why he will leave at some point imo. It's in his best interests..Keays is a very similar example to Ned.
