We got absolutely destroyed against Essendon in the centre square. I think hayes started reasonably well in his first few games but has tired, it’s been tough on him shouldering the load and he has done relatively well and it probably is bit harsh if it is in fact an omission but it also shouldn’t come as a complete surprise.

He had the most hitouts of any ruck in that game, only playing just above 60% gametime.
The essendon team came out knowing they were against a young ruck and targeted him early to try to get on top and they succeeded for all of about 5mins before Sam worked his way back.
He’s at the top end of the stats that are the most important for a ruck, and he’s doing that playing less time on ground.
