Dale or McLean for Jong. Whichever one Bev reckons can implement the zone best. Hrovat into the guts for Jong, Bont to take 3rd man up duties. Let's stick with what's working and Hopefully Jongy is back against Freo.

Not impressed with using Bont as 3rd man up, Snake. This would be like using a Lamborghini to do the supermarket shopping.

If I was a betting man, I would be counting on Cordy to retain his spot.

Given the injury to Jong, think...

Out: Jong (injured), Smith (rested), Roberts (lack of a match up)
In: Wallis, Grant, Biggs
Emergency: Hunter, Dale

If Wallis doesn't come up, then Hunter for sure.

They might keep Roberts if they think he is quick enough to keep up with one of the Saints mosquitoes. I worry our back line might be too top heavy...God, how many times have I thought that in the past...lmao

Saints played 2 rucks last week and Riewoldt due back that's Riewoldt Bruce hickey/longer and membry in their f50 need Roberts this week

Haha fair play. But he did it a couple of times in round 1 and they were the best taps to advantage we've had all year! But I guess it's up to Bonti, if he's feeling like a bit of ruck dominance he'll jump in there.

No way webb is sub
blokes all class down back

I just wasn't sure who should be sub, I went with Webby because after 3 full games I reckon he could be a bit sore and a mini rest might be good for him. Also allows the fresh legs of Biggs to get a full game.

Reckon Biggs could be a chance of playing sub. Get him used to the pace and then use him to quieten one of their small forwards if they start cutting us up. The other could be Roberts as a swing man if he gets to keep his spot.

Delaney is pretty solid down back these days.
Would still give up about 6-7 centimetres to Boyd though I'd say. Not expecting domination or anything of the sort but I'd be looking for Boyd to have a solid game.

Where did everything land with the roof? Are they still going to judge it week to week. Makes no sense, just keep it closed in my eyes.

Yeah think the rule is the same, I agree, there's a roof, use it!

In: Minson, Biggs
Out: Cordy, Jong

Grant shouldn't be back in the team unless he starts tearing it up in the VFL. He might be showing promising signs at AFL Level, but his output has still only been serviceable, whereas a player like Biggs or Hunter could potentially make a huge difference. Not to mention, Grant wouldn't be able to fulfil Jong's role in the team; they're completely different players.

I'd prefer to keep young guys like Bailey Dale and Toby McLean in the VFL. Competition for spots is very strong right now and I don't think it's a good idea to rush a first year player in while we're in red hot form. It's easy to say Dale's an ideal replacement for Jong because of his speed, but the pace and intensity of AFL is completely different to VFL, and chances are he's going to have a tough time, even against the Saints.

As for rucks, while I think it's extremely important to get games into one of our long term options, I don't think Cordy's going to work out, and there are still big question marks over Campbell, particularly his fitness, so I think we're better off sticking with Minson for now, as he gives us a far better chance of winning games. He might not be ideal for Beveridge's gameplan, but against the Hawks, we were competitive in the stoppages when he was in the ruck, whereas Cordy gets beaten all too easily.

As for Wallis, while he definitely as a spot in the team, I think he should be given an extra week's rest simply because we can afford to.

What kind of footy do the Saints play? I haven't watched much of them.

Do they play a heavy press like us or more one on one?

What is the key to beating them and where can we exploit and score heavily?

ie, what did Collingwood do well against them?

They are extremely slow movers of the ball. They focus on winning contests and then work the ball short and attempt to maintain possession. Also use the boundary very, very heavily. Their pressure is inconsistent - they're very capable of forcing repeated contested situations and when intensity is up they can make it difficult for opponents to work the ball out and find space. However, when that effort is not there they lack both talent and experience. In short, if that effort drops off they become quite easy to beat.

As it stands, there are two major steps to beating the Saints: (1) pressure them heavily, and (2) disallow them short marking options defensively. These two combine to expose their average foot skills, force them into turnovers and take advantage of them on the rebound. They don't defend rebound footy well as a consequence of their game style and it's the most direct method of scoring against them.

Went to the open training session tonight. Surprised not many fans were there.

Team divided into 5 or 6 stations doing different skill/ball movement activities run by the assistant coaches.

Saw mostly Gia run his station on the near side. He got players to run towards the incoming ground ball and tap it to the side/behind and turn their opponent.

Some of my limited random observations:
1. Didn't see Minson at training tonight. (Maybe I just missed him- but from my eyes he was unsighted).
2. Tala left as I arrived with a staff member. Didn't train.
3. Bonti, Libba & Pearce were on the bike the whole session.
4. Morris' arm still in a sling.
5. Boyd just really doing kick to kick with the one handed Jordan Kelly (hand/wrist in a cast)
6. Wallis and Caleb Daniel both trained unimpeded
7. Murphy didn't favor any of his shoulders which he got a knock to on the weekend. Looks fine and was quite jovial out there with the youngsters
8. Dickson kicking well for goal from the boundary b4 they went inside. Such a natural goal kicker. JJ failing to score on his attempt would have been lucky to land in the goal square.

Got some video but will see how I go with uploading

Sounds a bit like our game plan last year?

Funnily enough we actually moved the ball quite quickly last year. People got sucked into the groupthink, I feel. We were the fifth-fastest side for average defence-to-offence transition time in the competition IIRC and over the course of the year we began to play on from free kicks/marks more. The problem was that we had no real system in transition - we blindly moved the ball quickly, but couldn't convert these transitions into actual opportunity.

The Saints use the ball shorter, slower and more methodically than we did last year. Also use the boundary much more.

Dannnnnnnnnn I agree with your analysis of St Kilda's ball movement with one difference. What you described is their movement against a well structured and set up defence. Their ball movement is slow transitioning from defence to attack when they are confronted with a game situation where the opposition has had the chance to setup defensively.
From a turnover or midfield stoppage win they are competent at moving the ball quickly and kicking long into Bruce or Membrey or Reiwoldt if on the side. This transition is usually fairly swift if they can complete the handball chain without disrupting it due to poor skill execution.
Unlike us however they do not create as many of these opportunities, meaning that throughout the course of the game, they do look like slow ball movers overall.
