I watched about 30 seconds of 360 the other night and Robbo was talking about it not being play on, but actually awarding the free kick against the player who has ducked even if he gets rid of the footy.

I wasn’t sure if that was him stating facts or being hypothetical. Or just getting the whole thing muddled as usual.
That was my understanding too from reading the news report.

Almost certain to be confusion among players and fans alike this week as they get used to the latest AFL whim. They have NFI.

For those wondering Weightman's kicked 25 goals this year with only 4 of them coming directly from free kicks (16%).
Passes the eye test. Weightman hasn’t really received any howlers this year. In fact when he’s clearly accentuating the contact, the umpires have been correctly calling play on.

If that was the new rule it would be the final straw for me and I'd comfortably walk away from footy for good

That would be a nightmare, it’s 100% definitely not the case though.

This is directly from the AFL, it’s pretty straight forward I think all the clubs/players should be able to interpret the ruling -

In theory it’s perfect and exactly how it should be adjudicated, let’s see how it plays out in real life though.

Yup completely as expected, expecting an out of touch English to ruck one out against Gawn & Jackson. With back up from ??? A half fit Bruce maybe who can’t even run out a game as is.

Sounds like we’ve lost ourselves a winnable game on Thursday night once again but who would be surprised?

Hannan probably going to do his best shot at losing the game anyway, if we manage to overcome the ruck situation. He’s going to be an absolute liability in defence against a good side - brilliant experiment, make it end pls

That's an excellent early melt

Why are the bottom two "play on"? Shouldn't it also be HTB if they don't dispose of the ball? The bottom four should be the same in the results column, shouldn't they? What am I missing?

Is it possible to get a poll going in this thread one ruck or 2 for this game. If there is i am voting for 2 against the dees. Do not think Bevo has watched the nightmare of the last 1.5 quarters of the grand final.

I'd guess 'driving' or 'ducking' is considered to be prior opportunity (similar to a fend off) whilst 'shrugging' or 'dropping' is not. I don't necessarily agree with it but that's my guess at how umpires are taught to officiate it.

I always feel more comfortable and confident with English and Sweet in the side. I know many will bring up stats to back up one or the other but it won’t change my confidence when both playing as opposed to English alone.

On a positive rapt to see Garcia go around again.

I would play Cleary ahead of Hannan.

I think it’s suggesting that a tackle hasn’t been laid yet, ie you shrug a tackle high but it slips off, being play on.

They clarify in the article that they still have to dispose of the ball cleanly or it’s HTB if tackled and no disposal. But yeah all 4 should be the same in the table.
