I don't know why people stress so much about Buss playing. He missed heaps of his first year with his shoulder. He's being developed as a full back. That role takes a lot of strength and, bar a few, most take years to develop that. He's developing great in the VFL. Still contracted next season. Regularly in the emergencies. Seems right on track.
He missed a chunk of his first preseason with the shoulder but was available for pretty much the start of the year. 2 and bit years in and we havent seen him in the team at all isn't great, particularly when players like Gardner were getting picked ahead of him (and we threw a hail mary and moved Lobb to the backline ahead of him)

He was serviceable against the pies decent against the blues and woeful last week,

The stand up hug the ball tactic was just bizarre haven't seen that since auskick,

As much as he is a good story he is 25 now and has not shown enough to keep getting games especially as a KPD
You are another of the posters that have the slows on Buku or pot him each time he makes a mistake.

He is no superstar, but he is maturing into an intercept defender role (not a KPD) and could play the 3rd tall forward role much more effectively than JOD in my opinion.

He has deficiencies, but most footballers do. I think he deserves his chance.

You and several others on here don't rate him and that’s okay - I have a different view. Plenty on here didn’t rate VDM prior to this year, but the MC showed faith and he has shown significant improvement. Buku is hopefully on a similar path and at 25, the time is now.

At 25 the time is now how many intercept marks did he take last week?

I watched the replay with him in mind (among others). I thought he was OK.
Thought he got lost a bit too much did a few things alright. The fumble on the transition killed momentum and is maybe symptomatic of not enough experience.
It was at a crucial point when he didn't need to do anything but just be clean and he couldn't and instead ended up a stoppage.
I'm only a mug supporter with limited TV vision of the game obviously match committee thought he did enough hopefully he performs better this week.

Buku when is playing well is definitely a serviceable AFL player. He just needs to be more consistent.
When he is not on, it’s really bad. But prior to last week, he was going okay & saved us a few times with his defensive efforts against Carlton. Hopefully gets back to that this week.

If he doesn’t become more consistent, I could see Buss taking his spot in the coming weeks until Marra is back which will move JOD back.

Yeah I'm another of those (ie a mug supporter with limited TV vision).

At times I've been doubtful he'd make it but I can see that he offers something. At the moment he is doing enough to hold his senior spot. That said, if a good third tall prospect such as Buss can press his case then Buku's spot isn't guaranteed.

Remember he didn't grow up with a footy in his hands like Sam Darcy and most of those consummate midfielders did. I think some of his play (his anticipation, decision making and reading of the ground ball) reflects that. This is what we should expect of NGA players and what the program is meant to be about. It's why we need to be patient. Even at age 25. The fact that he is making incremental improvements in these areas each year is encouraging. I could easily see him becoming an automatic selection in a year or two without the need for any raised eyebrows.

That hugging the ball thing is interesting. I expect the players have been told not to try to break free of a tackle once claimed. That's because umpires (perversely) have been instructed to pay a free kick when the struggle to break clear is protracted. IMO the AFL doesn't value the clearance getter enough. They would rather do a quick ball up to re-start the game than see tedious rugby-like mauls. So if the player doesn't quickly concede that he's been held they pay a free against him.

All players do it. They "fold" in the tackle and accept that it's a ball up. It's just that some do it less obviously than Khamis does. It's another of those little things that might not come as naturally to a kid with an NGA background. What he's doing is probably a response to the coaching instruction "don't fight the tackle if there's no obvious handball boys, just accept the ball up".

The risk is that an umpire might see it as prior opportunity and award a free anyway. So he'll be getting some tips on how to be more subtle about it in future.

on Buss. one of the more interesting cases. Bevo is usually very generous in giving people their first game. why not Buss? theres been a number of weeks where a debut would not have been too charitable.

on Buku. 25yo. 5th season, 30 games. lots of VFL footy. still makes howlers, looks like a footy novice at times, and has poor games along side some good ones. would want to find consistency pretty quickly for mine. i personally dont think he'll make it. not a natural footballer.

He’s not AFL standard unfortunately
Billy Frampton was genuinely one of the worst talls in the entire league for a long period of time, and is now a premiership player.

I’ve also seen more than enough criticism of Ryan Lester over his career, as well as Darcy Fort. Both played in last years flag.

“Not AFL standard” is just such a terrible, unfair label to give a player. Every single player on an AFL list right now is AFL standard, or else they wouldn’t be there.

Reminds me of my 15yo son who sprouted to 6'2 suddenly at age 15 and started playing basketball for the first time. Got him a hoop for the backyard so he practices all his solo skills -> shooting, dribbling, layups until he is pretty good at those. But in a proper game his game sense and awareness is not there - either does something random, or more often takes so much time to make a decision that he is mugged and coughs the ball up. Im sure he will get better at that, but lacking the 1000 hours of competitive practice of his teammates who started playing when they were 8, he is a long, long way behind.

100% no doubt thats the reason for it he lacks a lot of football common sense which he could mask with athleticism at a younger age which is why he is now getting exposed more as like Kieren Collins types it doesn't work against men,

I have no issue with him on the list as a last resort back up as he can play 2/5 serviceable games 1/5 decent/good games and 2/5 howlers,

He is 25 now no longer a kid and if he is being picked as an "intercept" player whilst taking 0 intercept marks I just don't know how we can continue to persist as he offers literally nothing else

That's not true,

There are plenty of "developmental" taller players on lists that are not actually good enough they're just experiments e.g when Goetz was given the flick he went back and played u19s level not even local seniors

I like JJ in.
its also a sign that match comittee recognise a lack of experience and class, which was costly last week
We have been in desperate need of someone to chop out Dale,

With Freijah moving on ball and Bramble not kicking on from last year, it's been a noticeable issue getting the ball from defence to attack without it going through either Lobb or Dale

Well clearly he is not being picked just as an intercept player otherwise he’d have been omitted by now. That was his early claim to fame, and being unable to do much more than that for a while held him back.

I see it as a positive indication of his development that he now has more strings to his bow, even if he still has limitations.

It’s hard to shake an early reputation in footy. Even when the underlying form that led to that reputation has changed.

I’ve no idea if he’ll stay in the side long term but I like the fact that he has applied himself and is hanging in there against what seemed like long odds.

His only other "strength" at the moment is spoiling so he's essentially just a smaller Gards now

We have very different definitions of “flourish”. I am hoping Buku can cement a spot in the team but I do not believe it will be as a KPD. I thought he had done ok recently but his efforts to a couple of ground balls in the last game and his new tactic of taking the ball and just standing there upright waiting to be tackled left me shaking my head. I hope he makes it but his latest game was so- so.
That tactic looks to be a coaching move, to accommodate the holding the ball rule change. Liam Jones did it a couple of times too.

Good ball users replacing our poorest ball users (but Vanders probably injury, and has been good this year). Narrow ground too.

You are so ridiculous right! I would love to be Darcy Fort with a Premiership medal that hundred of players who never got one. He was brilliant in the most important game for Brisbane and his career!

Went down later in training today after a big knock with Darcy. Knee tests done, he got back up and did some 25 metre run throughs but then headed inside looking deflated.

Hopefully nothing more than a knock or jar.
Hey BulldogMuscle this post has very borrowed information in it from another forum.
Firstly probably not a great idea to pass it off as your own, second maybe some attribution wouldn't go astray.
You're a dogs man so clearly a legend, just need to ensure we respect other forums.
Cheers !
