Seriously, get Ah Chee in there to Shaun Grigg it. He's very strong for his size, has a great vertical leap and is agile. Darling rucks when the ball is up forward, Gov does it in defence and Ah Chee does it around the ground when nicnat is off. Gets him right in the thick of the action and will offer more than Vardy and stops us from going too tall.

Actually don’t mind this call at all. It won’t happen though.

Interesting write up from Nathan Schmook.

He's predicting Jones in Petch to be sub.

Simmo has also been quoted elsewhere saying 3 talls is a week to week thing as is 2nd ruck set up.

Jarrad Brander was the standout at WAFL level, playing as a big-bodied midfielder and winning clearances and contested ball. He's clearly in line to play that role at AFL level if needed, but the Eagles' midfielders stepped up in the absence of Luke Shuey and Elliot Yeo, so he might need to wait at least another week for a call-up. Balancing the medical substitute will be a challenge for the Eagles after Jamaine Jones remained unused in round one. It's unlikely he would fill the role again and risk missing out on a match for another week. An option for the Eagles is to swap him with Jack Petruccelle, who was quiet with six disposals. Brendon Ah Chee was impressive at WAFL level with two goals and could also be discussed at match committee. Captain Luke Shuey is expected to miss at least one more match with a hamstring injury. The Eagles indicated they would keep a two-pronged ruck structure against the Western Bulldogs.

R1 medical sub: Jamaine Jones (unused)

Verdict: Jones into the 22 and Petruccelle as medical sub. - Nathan Schmook

Petch as a sub would be a waste IMO. He is not versatile for a start (I think this is a prerequisite as you dont know what position may be subbed out), is unlikely to have much impact if he does come on and most importantly, needs to play a lot of WAFL if he is to develop into an AFL standard regular B22
AhChee is the man that fits the bill.

Petch and JJ back to Magoos.
Brander in on a wing.
Ahh Chee sub.

With Dogs midfield size and numbers we need to try match it as best we can while missing Yeo and Shoo.
Maybe run Redden on Bont to curb his influence.

End of the day, win it at the coalface and play keepy off.

Going to be a damn good early test.

I don't entirely agree with the assertion that Petch didn't apply pressure, at least not in the manner it has so far been put forward here. Easy to look at his tackle count and feel uninspired, but realistically tackles are not much of a reliable way to measure pressure from a forward.

In Sunday's game we laid 34 tackles for the match (and the Suns 39). This is less than what we averaged last season, in shortened games. In 2019 our side averaged 58 tackles.

There were 145 to 137 marks taken on the weekend, and the game was played with (what might once have been) exceptional width and steadiness from both sides. In 2019 we averaged 99 marks and the Suns 87.

I'm happy for people to claim Petruccelle didn't apply enough pressure (or get enough ball...) if they have notions to support that, but I don't think having 1 tackle is one of them. Langdon had 1 tackle. Cripps had 1 tackle. Ryan had 2. NN, Cole, 'Mongrel' Nelson and Shepp had 1 tackle. Duggan didn't lay one. No-one got more than 3 of the things!! Only 11 i50 tackles were laid all afternoon by either side.

Additionally, while I'm absolutely slaying campaigners with facts: I see people bemoaning that we don't move the ball with enough dare or excitement, while also being underwhelmed by the ability for our forwards and mids to lock the ball in the forward 50. It's curious because these things largely act in opposition, and Simpson said that too often we moved with abandon and swiftness, causing us to be hurt on the rebound and unable to establish meaningful field position.

IN: Ainsworth
OUT: Naitanui

Good points.

The heat factor makes it hard to assess things properly. And without Ainsworth, Petch is the next whipping boy.

Geez, even runner-up whipping boy Nelson doesn't get his whipping boy credit.

I’d like us to go in with no changes, but realistically I think we need Jones to get some game time and I think Petch will get dropped, even if I’m sure he played a role.

In: Brander (sub)
Out: Petch

on the one hand I am wary of taking brander away from some continuity in his footy- but he’s almost the perfect sub given his capabilities to play back forward or through the middle.

Plan has to be to keep the ball on the outside as much as possible. The bulldogs love the contested ball and rush forward on the back of that. If we can slow down the running and hurt them the other way, we are in with a good chance. One thing Collingwood really lacked last week against them was midfield pressure away from the contest. I believe we have better two way runners than the pies. Even without Shuey and Yeo we can still apply pressure and harass and that’s what we need to do.
