Charlie Curnow - The Return!

sure, there's lots of things to weigh up - undoing 2 years of misery/hard work just to see him this year would be nuts - but the lift it would bring the group.....

And my pants.

But in all seriousness, I wouldn't have too much expectation on him. Just happy to see him getting around and moving freely.

Well said.
No risks with Charlie.
Just great seeing him play some footy again this year even if it was a scratch match.

charlie playing limited minutes in the bigtime may not be the best thing for our game strategy - yes I'm aware we may not have a game strategy but if we did!

Step 1 - Get the ball to Sam Walsh at all costs
Step 2 - Repeat step 1.

I think you know who'll be the judge of what is well or not well said, my very very very very very very very very very very good friend.........

Some guys play in the 60% match time on a normal week, Paddy Dow has 3 games this year in the 60s and another 3 just over 70%. Chuck could manage that I'm sure.

Depends how one defines limited minutes I suppose but I think we could give him 65-70% game time without too much damage to the strategy.

if he has been training with the main group for 6 weeks and had a practice match
you would play him in round one, yes
not a great deal of difference
play harry further up forward, and have curnow stay in the arc
ideal game to come back against wooden spoon team

No VFL again this weekend, I don’t think he’ll play AFL this year, he would need a month at VFL level you’d think.
Surely another scratch match will be organised between 3-4 clubs?
Increase his loads and game time if he's pulled up well. It's a bunch of AFL listed players trying to maintain match fitness and impress for selection. Don't think it would be far off a VFL game.

I thought his return would be something like:
50% match time
75% match time
full game

Return to seniors.

Based on the report though he played 3 qtrs already, so is a week ahead of my guesstimation. If he plays a full game this weekend I could see him in the seniors next week. I don't think it being a scratch match as opposed to VFL changes much. In fact you could argue the competition is harder, instead of playing part time footballers with the odd AFL listed player it was all AFL listed players.

Those AFL listed players still have a lot to play for. They want to get into the senior team or earn another contract for next year. They still have a livelihood to play for, I doubt they'd just phone it in and play at half effort just because it wasn't a VFL game.

Would say it's a chance, if they can play and if he can increase his loads. Would have to be an upturn in form though, IMO.
To come in after 2 years with 75% and say maybe 90% game time from two scratch matches, he would need to be showing those cobwebs are gone and boot a few to be in the mix.
If it's 90% game time, but still a bit rusty, I'd be happy for him to have another week.

Agree. I was also thinking that 3 week return would work both in game fitness and touch. 3 week build to full gametime and also 3 weeks to blow off the cobwebs would be about right.

If he kicks 3 or 4 this weekend though I think I'll start getting excited...

If Ed and Charlie really want to play together in Ed's 200, simple solution drop Ed until Charlie has played minimum 4 full games at VFL level.

We have been blessed with having 3 ridiculously good mids in succession: Judd, Cripps, Walsh

Yet it has amounted to sweet FA.. In thepast we have waited back expecting the superstar name to carry the rest of the underwhelming midfield when really we needed a good mix that complement each other... On paper with a midfield of Kruezar, Gibbs, Murphy, Judd we should have been winning flags, but never got close because they didnt work as a unit.

So drop Ed for the rest of the year?

I don't reckon Charlie plays 4 VFL games before returning. There's no VFL now anyway, so the closest thing is multi-club scratch matches.

Sounds like Charlie's still got his fitness, played 75% in last week's 4-team scratch match (and from Riley Beveridge's report hadn't lost 'his engine') and probably plays a full game this week in a similar scratch match before returning round 20 or 21 if all goes well.

it was a bit tongue in cheek, but yeah i dont feel the need to bring in Charlie anytime soon. Its always the 2nd game back from LTI where players pull up sore.. He needs to get his body used to playing footy again, and no amount of training and running can prepare him for that, particularly brining him now playing against defenders with 20 games under their belt, it will destroy his confidence when he inevitably struggles to get a kick. If we want to give him a taste bring him in round 23 against the Giants..
