Player Watch Chayce Jones - Re-Signed to End of 2026

Greenwood annoys me. I wasn't opposed to trading him if we could get a good return for him. But my bar for "good return" was a 2nd round pick. For a future 3rd and 4th like we actually got, I would have rather just kept him. We should probably be thanking our lucky stars that this year's draft is so stacked with academy / father-son prospects. It's questionable whether the draft will even go to the 3rd or 4th round (especially if list sizes get cut), so the only value those picks have are the points.
Followed up with moron Roo trash talking him in public about only getting 10 touches a game and since then he is killing it!
He always had X factor with being able to go forward...
Just so annoying looking at our list knowing we let these guys walk for peanuts

I think we're going to have to accept Jones doesn't have the body to play as an inside mid. Maybe he does one day or maybe not, either way we're going to need a role change for him in the short term. Wing, forward or back?

I get what you’re saying but I think we need persevere with him in the midfield as a hybrid.

We’ve a host of players developing to fill roles, Jones absolutely must anchor the midfield in time.

This could be seen as an issue. Somewhat concerning.

Second year player struggling with the theory part of the game.

For a midfielder that is a concern.

Many may read that and think it as positive.

But if he cant get to terms with structures and reading the play, he may get churned out.

Hopefully I am over thing that question and response.

Weird that Nicks would respond like that.

Strange he would comment, I would have thought he'd just say "he needs a break" and not indulge in theorizing with a reporter.

Brad Crouch has admitted he's struggled at times. Nicks is trying to do some more complicated things with team defence than what Pyke had in place and not all the players are picking it up instantly. Chayce for one definitely seems to be overthinking his defensive positioning and is focusing too much on his man and not the ball at times.

The thing I don’t get about that is if he is doing it wrong, surely he’s been told to correct it. I mean it’s been going on for weeks.

They probably have, I imagine there's also the issue of our scratch matches being 14-16 a side that kind of makes it hard to work on things like team defence as much as a regular game would, so probably thought/hoped the best way for him to learn was to keep him in and hope he turned it around. Unfortunately hasn't, so has to go back and work his way up again.

Brad Crouch is probably not very smart.

Hence he has never taken that next step.

Yes injuries have been an issue.

But he plays dumb football.

Even though question was about structures, this bit is telling for me:

"needs a freshen up to take the weight off his shoulders"

Comes across as a confidence guy - bit of an over-thinker. Even in his earlier games last year where he looked ok and got a bit of it he butchered pretty much everything around goal. Raw skills are there, and has shown glimpses. I still think theres a better than average chance of him becoming a B+ 200 gamer.

I think our e-sports team are sporting a better physique than some of our guys.

Nicks “Brad we need you to run both ways.”
Brad “I have no idea what you are talking about Nicksy”

Sorry to bump this thread again but watching the progression of Jones still intrigues me week to week.

Last week he had 2 goals and 13 touches which was a huge step forward. Last night he was a bit quieter with 9 touches. Took a strong contested mark in the second half, but still seems a little lost/second guessing himself. Also wants to get rid of the ball as soon as he gets it.

I’m hoping with a strong off season in the weights room he’ll have a bit more confidence and have a real breakout 2021

Watched his 2nd half again last night, wasn't as bad as it looked at the ground

Applied pressure well, burst from the stoppage on a few occasions and took a great contested grab. Not as good as last week but not as bad as I thought. Probably needs to be settled down in 1 spot

As we have seen with berg, McAdam, let's give him 10 games on the wing before we get too carried away with him not progressing.

He's taken steps forward in his last couple of games IMO, getting 10 or so touches, impacting the game with goals, tackles. I don't see him having a 'breakout game' but getting a good 3 or 4 games in a row where he is really contributing and becoming more comfortable.

He played everywhere last night, very bizarre. Even Scho was all over the place at times, hence the low possession count.

Yeah, i've stopped trying to be overly critical with him. He's down on confidence this year which is clear as day, whether that's because we tried to put too much on his plate at the start, or whether he's hit a 2nd year wall I don't know, but i'm glad we are letting him play through it to try and take something out of this season.

I have a feeling he's the kind of kid that will be filthy with how his season went, and will attack the offseason with a vengeance.

If I had to pick a spot for next year its wing. Just set and forget. Let him run through the line of the ball, attend stoppages around the ground, use his running power to be a 2 way player!
