Teven Jenkins out with a back injury, Bears were “well aware” of issues before draft

Posted by Josh Alper on August 11, 2021, 11:55 AM EDT

It wasn’t long after the Bears traded up to select Teven Jenkins in the second round that he was installed as the likely starter at left tackle this season, but Jenkins hasn’t been able to solidify that spot in training camp.

A back injury has kept Jenkins from getting on the field at all during camp and Elijah Wilkinson is now listed as the No. 1 left tackle on the team’s depth chart. During a Wednesday appearance on 670 The Score, Bears head coach Matt Nagy said the team was aware of Jenkins’ history of back issues when they drafted him and that everyone is working to get the rookie back on the field.

“Teven is doing everything he can right now to get through this,” Nagy said. “We were well aware of everything, with some of the back issues that he had in college. Right now, this is just a part of the process, and we know that. So we’re just going to keep staying positive with him, and we have a plan with Andre Tucker, our head trainer, and our doctors. Obviously, Teven is frustrated, because he wants to be out here with his brothers. But right now, that’s not the case. He’s just doing everything he can do each day to get better in the training room.”

Jenkins’ back problems may not have taken the Bears by surprise, but they’re messing up the plans for the offensive line this season and that’s nothing the team needs when improvement on that side of the ball is a must for the 2021 season.

Justin Fields had some strong moments against the Dolphins over the weekend, but the first-round pick’s play in the preseason opener isn’t causing Bears head coach Matt Nagy to rethink the plan at quarterback.

Nagy told reporters on Monday that Andy Dalton remains the No. 1 quarterback in Chicago and that he remains on track to start against the Rams on the first Sunday night of the regular season. Nagy also said that the plan for this week’s game against the Bills is for Dalton to spend more time on the field than he did against the Dolphins.

“Andy had six plays. It’s hard to say much good or bad. We’re going to get him some more snaps,” Nagy said, via Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times.

While Dalton will start and get more playing time, Nagy also said he wants Fields to have time with starting offensive players against the opponents’ starting defense. Unless or until they change their plans, balancing that desire with getting Dalton ready for Week 1 will be a delicate act for the Bears.

Teven Jenkins having back surgery

Posted by Josh Alper on August 18, 2021, 9:43 AM EDT

When the Bears signed veteran tackle Jason Peters this week, it was a sign that they were not counting on second-round pick Teven Jenkins being ready to start the season at left tackle.

That fear was well founded. Jenkins has missed all of training camp with a back injury and head coach Matt Nagy said on Wednesday that Jenkins will have surgery to address the issue.

Jenkins’ back issues date back to his days at Oklahoma State. The Bears traded up to take Jenkins despite being aware of the problem and that gamble has backfired on them to this point.

Nagy added that the team hopes to have Jenkins back this season, but it’s unclear when he might be healthy and asking him to step in to play after missing all of his first NFL training camp will be a tall order.

4D chess by Scott Fitterer, lost my sh*t draft day when we traded the pick to the Bears and they took Jenkins who I wanted bad.
Fitterer proven to be a beast and anything he does must be trusted. Even a trade for Watson

Pace cant hold his nerve. Horrible drafter in terms of that
I agree but it’s yet another glaring need that needed to be addressed urgently. Jenkins was projected as first round by many so I’m ok with this one.
Looks like Akiem Hicks is holding out on camp until he gets an extension.
Im a big fan of his but hate the hold out to ransom era we see now
