OK, so I definitely read this post - and you want to take Busslinger on the potential he may be better than Edwards or Bazzo, or the potential that he, Bazzo or Edwards might be able to play forward. But you also say potential is a dangerous word....

It's a contradiction. We may well take Busslinger as he is the best player available at 8. However he absolutely does not play a position of need for us. We're screaming out for Mids (inside, balanced - we are probably OK for developing outside mids at this stage unless a potentially elite one slips - i.e. Tsatsas), small forwards (we need at least 1), HBF (probably need one - or we will be taking our outside mids to put here), Key forward (a LOT riding on Jack Williams at the moment - otherwise we are shot in 3-4 seasons). So taking a KPD with the highest pick we have had in over a decade carries a huge amount of risk for our list profile.

I'm not opposed to drafting him, but I do acknowledge that he plays in the one position that is not a need for our list (and if another club wants to pay to trade up for him I would absolutely consider it if he was there at 8 and they wanted him!).
There is no way anyone could confidently say deBussy will be better than Bazzo or Edwards.

Doubts on Edwards are strange within this context, the guy is a beast who beat Curnow one on one multiple times.

Yep agreed.

If Edwards can keep developing as a lockdown defender we look to have a good mix with him, Barrass and Bazzo going forward (post-Gov... and he should still have some good years left).

Busslinger at 8

Busslinger at 12 :thumbsu:

Have to take the best midfielder at 8, if Busslinger slides to 12 then you can take him and hope to strengthen the midfield further at 20 and 26.
The Western Bulldogs have pick 11. They would bite your hand off and get their pick in in point 3 of a second if he made it through to them. If the Pieman wants him it will have to be pick 8.

Conversely if The Team want a KPP then Busslinger at 8 is the go because after which the quality KPP become scarce.

There will still be four quality mids still on the board at 12.

That would be paying the odds IF they wanted a KPP.

Personally I would prefer the two best mids at 8 & 12.

Yep i agree.

I have no interest in him at 8, and would not expect him to slide to 12, but could live with picking him there if he did.

I think we have a long history of being able to find good key defenders with later picks. We don't have that record with mids, would prefer we spend up big on mids this draft.

If we go the BUSS then we are kind of hamstrung going ahead.
Say a KPD falls to our pick 20, or in subsequent drafts we have a highly rated player at our pick then we miss out on value.
We do need a developing KPF or two so theoretically taking one would be ok. (Ruck as well)

Speaking with a guy tied up with Swan Districts the other day. Couldn't speak more highly of Hewitt from a football sense, but kid sounds like a loose unit. Expelled from school. Bulldogs and Bombers pretty keen on him.
I heard he was on his 3rd school in a year.

Bombers pick too early, unless they trade back to increase trade capital.

Dogs might take him just before our second. In this scenario, I think there would be a very good option still at 12.

Trying to work out how pick 8 might play out.

Safe to assume the first three picks will be the following and hence no chance of getting to 8: Cadman, Wardlaw, Sheezel

40% chance as a slider to pick 8: Tsatas, MacKenzie, Clarke

75% chance as a slider to pick 8: Busslinger, Ginbey

90% likely to be at our pick: Phillipou, Humphrey, Hewett, Hollands

You could almost say that if one of the above 40% chances as a slider made it to our first pick, would be our first pick. If not, one of either the 75% chances would be.

I heard Hewitt's GF got a teaching job in Melbourne.

I heard he's already bought a house in Tasmania in anticipation of the new team.

There was a kid like that at a school where I taught (until he was "withdrawn" to go elsewhere). He managed just over 100 AFL games, but players with less athletic ability from the same school had much better careers.

I know a lot of people mention Phillipou at one of our picks, but is there any love for Humphrey? Seems to also have game-changing attributes.

I certainly wouldn't be disappointed with Busslinger at 8, but I do think our greater need is midfielders.

There is a query on his ball use and/or decision making from what I've seen and read.

True, but that can also be said of Dangerfield and Fyfe. There's probably still a role for a bullocking mid-forward who can blast away from stoppages and get the ball going in the right direction quickly. A lot of other clubs seem keen on him.
