Clarkson and Hawthorn are obviously of that view.
The interesting dynamic was it when it came to the captaincy Clarkson and the club were prepared to move Sam on and replace him with Hodge. This was clearly the correct move.
And now essentially the same people are choosing and Sam Mitchell as coach.

Also as reported in the Age on Tuesday that Graham Wright and Clarkson fell out last year in lockdown. And that clearly lead to Wright moving to Collingwood.

Wright was responsible for finishing Buckley's tenure. And the first person he approached as a potential coach was Sam Mitchell. Wright also clearly has an informed and great opinion of Sam's potential.

I love Clarkson and he is clearly the best coach in the competition. What he did will never be forgotten.

I think the board have done a tremendous job in getting us into the position we will now be coached by Sam. As Kennett said in the press conference, these are very difficult decisions. And they clearly understand the ramifications.

The Club hasn't and will not fall apart and just as importantly I feel will be well received by the players.

Just look what happened to Essendon.The funny thing about this is reading the hubris pumped out by Slobbo and seeing his hatred of Hawthorn Clarkson and his schadenfreude belch to the surface.

At least Clarko had the balls to confront our pussy board and knew in the best interests of the club to sort this matter out due to mince pies saga.

I’ve seen a few people raise this and I think the leadership of captaincy and coaching is a very, very different beast. It’s also been 12 years since Mitchell handed over the club captaincy and I’m sure he’s matured and developed as a human since then - in addition to being a qualified coach now in his own right and he’ll have 6 years of apprenticeship by the time he takes over, most of it under Clarko which the last 5 premierships tell us is a decent way to learn the trade.

Clarko, Dimma, Scott and Longmire and Fagan are probably the upper echelon of coaches in the league at present and none of them ever captained an AFL team also. So I can see why Mitchell’s captaincy tenure might raise questions about his leadership but I think in the bigger picture it’s really not much of an issue.

Whilst, like Jason Dunstall, I believe sacking Clarkson for Mitchell was a brave decision, I accept the decision and look forward to watching Sam coaching during our rebuild.
What I am very doubtful about is the succession plan which appears fraught with danger having two strong personalities sharing decision making and communicating with the troops. It may work but it may also implode.

Finally it astounds me that some seem to believe that Clarkson will not end up coaching another AFL club sooner or later. Clarkson is the best qualified coach around, and at his age he still has a lot to offer. Unless he decides to take a sabbatical and smell the roses for a while he will start coaching sooner. Coaching is his passion and I wish him well in whatever he chooses.

For what it is worth, every Hawthorn premiership coach has coached another Club when they were moved on. Clarko will be no different.

Difference is Malthouse never wanted to leave. Clarko has intimated in his press conference the time is right for him to consider his life options at the end of next season. Clarko will do everything it takes to hand the list over to Sam in good shape. Its how the bloke rolls.

We have to rebuild because we were so successful. Why were we so successful? Largely because of Clarkson.

I'm a Clarko supporter and he is unparalleled in modern times. However, his success also could be a major contributor to our current state.

Emboldened by success and wanting more, Clarko has gone the top up route in the last 5 years and is it clearly hasn't worked.
He has to own that; and in reality, it has set the club back 5 years. It was a gamble at the time and it failed.

His record has let him off the hook somewhat and at some stage, time comes for everyone.

One of the club's strengths over the last number of decades has been setting long term plans. If they look fwd to 10 years time, which great clubs always do, Clarko can't really be in the plans. If not now when we are rock bottom, then when do we push on to the future.

If he stands by his word, and the Hawks turn the corner by the end of next year and then Clarko hands over the reins to Mitch with the team in good shape with a bright future, his standing in the history of the game would go up even further.

Imagine a great send off at the end of 2022, R 23 as Clarko farewells the faithful at the MCG v an arch rival like Geelong or Essendon. Huge.

Fantastic post tbh.

The guy is a GIANT of our club. We need to treat Clarkson with the immense respect he deserves. However, that doesn't mean let him go at the end of the year. Please, no more freebies to other clubs. It's in our best interests for him to serve as coach in 2022 so lets make that happen. Collingwood and other opportunities are secondary to the needs of the Hawthorn Football Club. We've been far too generous giving away our players. (For example, watching two of the best wingman in the last 30 years running around for other clubs is extremely frustrating.) Lets not make that mistake again.
