Who is Alex woodwood?
Was on Hawthorn's list but did 3 ACL's or something around that.
Captained Collingwood VFL for a couple of years.

Reckon he got in trouble being a runner for collingwood a couple of years back too in the grand final

I highly doubt we are trying to build a team that will suit Clarko I'm 12 months time.

Much more likely we are just trying to build a quality team that we hope will see our current coach succeed.
Bird Man dropping truth bombs lately

Rendell is so hard to listen to. For example he wanted to tell his story about how the head trainer is important. He starts telling this long story and before he gets to the end he ends up getting side tracked and talking about 5 other side points he wants to make.

Was probably telling the story about how we should have won the flag in 06 but the trainer was too soft in pre season and we were t fit enough ... have heard him tell that a hundred times

I genuinely cringe when he speaks…when the Gold Coast list manager came on the first thing he did was diminish him because of his job title, somehow trying to throwback to the good old days when they didn’t have none of dem fancy titles. Then he carries on about Wayne Campbell trying to pull him down a peg or two and then starts talking about how astute he was watching preseason training and being able to predict future success or lack of.

This is the boys club at work. Honestly Rendell should be made to carry a pot plant around and apologise to it for the sheer volume of CO2 that comes out of his pie hole.

The younger lads are so far ahead of Rendell it’s embarrassing and no amount of anecdotal story telling will revive that dinosaur. SOS’s IQ is skewed down just by being in the same room.

I kind of like listening to him, he's like a drunk guy in the pub ranting about shit. More interesting than most of them even if he's just making shit up. Hangs guys out to dry too.

Not for me. He sounds like that boomer who thinks that being ‘brave’ enough to ridicule others will make himself more popular with the in crowd. The name dropping is incessant.

How about just trying to get ahead on the strength of your opinions? Like his opinion on the importance of the head of fitness within a club…there was no need to denigrate others to make that point.

I thought Grant Thomas was the head of Fitness back then.
and Head Coach
and Forward Coach
and Chief Recruiter ( with Bev as an assistant ).
and Head of Football
and Canteen lady.

Sorry for the intrusion guys. Just wanted your thoughts on Aaron hamill coaching wise? He’s come back to the blues as the backline coach

It's pretty hard to gauge, really. The default response of supporters will generally be to not rate assistants if the club hasn't had success. If the club has had success, fans will rate them. For that reason, I expect most saints fans probably don't rate him that highly. It's hard to know what impact (positive or negative) an assistant has had from the outside. He's never struck me as being overly articulate or strategically advanced, but there is a place for coaches who focus on the basics and coach in a meat and potatoes kind of way. Good luck to him.

At training he seems very upbeat and popular with the players. Doesn't look very rushed or stressed and looks like a good cop type. You don't last years in the system if you are crap.

Is it me or does anyone else think it strange that this thread knew about Hamill’s appointment as a Carlton assistant coach?
Early in August.
Before the Clarkson, Lyon, Clarkson, B Scott, Clarkson, C Scott and Voss performance theatre.
Odd.
Very odd.

Savro maybe? Seems to know him.

This is the most logical response I’ve seen from someone talking about assistant coaches

How could someone possibly profess to know if someone is any good or not other than what you hear

Always think it’s garbage when someone says ‘ oh they’re ranked 18th in clearances the midfield coach is no good’

Often it’s dictated by the players at their disposal , and the game plan which is largely dictated by the senior coach

Mostly an assistant is the messenger (I am aware there is more to it than just that)

Well if you are a defensive coach, I would have liked to see some semblance of a clear 16 man defensive system being implemented on field by the players, and you can look at KPIs such as I50 conceded, scores against, Marks conceded I50.

We were dreadful in the first half of the season with some of those KPIs, and I think the huge scores against which completely wiped our percentage early on was not satisfactory at any level of football.

Hamill also never spoke strategically or philosophically regarding how we wanted to defend as a team.

I may have rose coloured glasses from the Lyon era, but you see someone like Longmuir at Pies with a technically sound defensive minded approach to football, and he gelled with Buckley and made them a formidable team without the ball.

That's my expectation. It worries me a little that we have committed to Boris being a generally untried coach with a great background. I would have preferred someone who has runs on the board and is known within the system as a great defensive coach, backed up by team performance, but it may end up being an astute pick up.

It was being reported as early as June so I don't think it was the biggest kept secret.

Good summary. I think he got appointed early with no experience as a coach in any aspect. Correct me if I am wrong. My memory tells me he got a crack due to having good relationships with senior people. Not convinced about certain Saints assistant coaches we have had especially forwards turning into defensive coaches and the rest just swapping around ala Sexton and others. I would not recommend the saints coaching over the last 7-8 yrs apart from 2020. Enright is Defence with a capital so based on others being appointed with no coaching experience I just cannot see a problem with hiring him. Hamill is certainly experienced now and will need a strategy at the blues, but they do have a couple of key backs and good runners as a good starting point.
