Ratts is going to be under a lot of pressure next year. Only one year left of his contract, he needs to get results early.

I hope he can really get this side to click, the last thing we need is a year of questions being asked of the coach a la what Carlton went through this year.
If that happens… it only stops being fun when Clarko rules himself out.

yeah I get that, but Gringo was asserting he wasn't any good because he was at Carlton.

It's like the plague going to Carlton. Once you've been Carltoned the stain never leaves.

If we can carry on from the 2nd half of this year with a fit and further improved squad then we'll make finals and Ratts will almost certainly get an extension.

Let’s say we finish 4th and Clarko says I want the saints job.

What would you do?

only asking as I’m Bored but I also believe Ratten gets an extension

Saw we've been in contact with Dale Tapping.
Would we be 'happy' with him?

Actually l wouldn't want Clarko around unless it's at Ratts' behest.
If we have a coach that the boys will play for, and that coach has made finals 2 of 3 seasons after a decade of nuffin, you risk destroying that which has been built.
It has Malthouse to Carlton vibes to me.

That‘s what you call a conundrum…

I mean Clarko would be great, but that means we’ve have a cr*p year.
I’d much rather finish Top 4 - in which case Ratts deserves the extension!

We finish 4th next year and I'll be getting an extension, no idea what happens to Ratts......

I thought we would carry on from last season, this season. It didn't start off so well. Some injuries to key players and we were under the waves.

I'm wary of club propaganda these days but this piece is the most important thing in the last years:

We were a mentally broken club and it was stuck within the playing group. From the outside it seems that our brains trust has managed to repair the break now and we aught be able to expect continuity of performance from here on.
I'm not counting my chickens just yet, but like I said I rate this as the watershed moment for our playing group and without it there was no amount of coaching or recruiting that was gonna make a difference.
This is the damage to the psychology of players that the wrong choice of coach can make. Not only was Richo inept at coaching, but he destroyed the mentality on those under his charge.
Neild was probably similar in the same way but was sufficiently destructive that he was booted much quicker.

Saints are still to replace/employ three or four coaches and maybe a fitness guru and that will make make a big difference if they get the right people. No-one seems to discuss that.

What's to discuss though? Everyone wants Leppa, and there's no opinions on anyone else because we're not to know how good or bad other assistants of fitness staff are. The discussion over the dismissals wads had in the space of an evening with unanimous agreement of: Good!
Players on the other hand have a body of demonstrated work available at a touch on Kayo.

Coaches have a history as well dont they? A body of work to demonstrate how good they have been, are or will be.

Head coaches certainly do, but how does a football outsider determine a good or bad assistant coach?
2 examples are Malthouse replacing Ratten, which demonstrated the intangible quality of connection between Coach and players, and the difference that Choco seems to make to clubs where he's become an assistant, yet he's deemed to crazy to land another head gig.

WE are all outsiders but you can still read records, listen to what head coaches say about their assistants r.e Matthews on Fly McCrae etc etc. Go to VFL games- there are plenty of ways to get an insight...not just leppa , leppa leppa.

I'm not sure about that, when you look at the lists Richo had he was pretty hamstrung. You would happily delist his best players without blinking but you think he was the cause. It seems a bit like he was an average coach with a below average list and was playing to make finals which meant we didn't even get many high picks. Injury ****ed his final year like it's done with Ratts and we're still middling. The club has given Ratts better support, better players and more trades for good mature talent. Trout and Finnis for not watching Trout should be the real villains.

We never really looked broken under Richo, we were bland but hard working and lacked polish and skills but I never saw us like Carlton or Melbourne used to be. They got to the point where the could lose before they'd even turned up. The pieces we have are better now but we still lack that real top end.

I don't disagree that Rich wasn't given much to work with, but I firmly believe he destroyed whatever opportunity we had to continue a winning culture and he quashed whatever talent or spark was present on out list. He did have Carlisle, Bruce, Stuv in their prime years and JB looked like he'd be that star we needed. .
Richo was a spud.

And the accompanying soundtrack?
Surely something inspirational…
Das Rheingold, appropriate and so st Kilda like the espy with the gershwin room. The private school boys will nod ah Wagner, jweb will say I love this guy his music is on bugs bunny and romo will ask when’s his next album come out, so st Kilda.

Richo is a 2nd in charge type- can do that stuff on his ear all day every day because there is no direct pressure on him. Doing a VG job at Melbourne i believe. But could not get the saints moving at all. A few wasted years there.

Weren't you one of the ones saying Bruce wasn't AFL standard? Seb and Stuv were our two premium mids during the Richo years. He had a pretty turd worthy list. You say Seb is an actual liability but he was our best and fairest in a number of the Richo years. That says all you need to know about his list.
