When considering the Suns’ performance in 2021, it is worth remembering that in 2020 Witts, Collins, Day, Greenwood & Weller all played every match. If they’d all been available for every game in 2021, I reckon we’d have snagged at least a couple more wins & had less blowouts. That would have had us knocking on the door of the 8. Most of our young players improved in 2021, but they are not physically ready to carry the load that those senior players could. Just my opinion I know, but I don’t think replacing the coach at this stage would help. We need to recruit mature players. If we can’t, we’ll have to wait for the players we have to mature

I agree. If Witts didn't go down we would've won that match in Adelaide. If we had him for matches against Carlton early on then St Kilda at home results may have been different too. Collins plays and Fremantle/North loses were chances for wins. Snag some of those and we are on the edge of finals!

Every year every team gets injuries though. Obviously for teams lower down losing their senior players is a bigger issue, but can't be an excuse.

Exactly; we lose witts early and took a month to adjust.

Burgess and Graham as our main rucks very bad, but you have to make do with what you got

Smith was ok…….. for some games but it ended up being burgess being the catalyst in our wins

Burgess since he got picked up has been a forward, defender and ruck, and surprisingly his best position was a undersized ruck.

Witts coming back will be great next year but seriously we have to target chol or any young ruck that wants a game or else we’ll be using the same excuse next year and I and every other fan will be sick of it

With the Hawks moving above us, the crows likely to beat the Roos and the possibility of the Pies beating the injectors we could end up with pick 2, that’s right pick 2 after 4 years and countless concessions

I would laugh if I didn’t feel like crying

Hard to defend a club when they spit in our face and get pick 2

Just watch Dews presser and 2 comments were very interesting to me

1.Q:has the club given assurances you will be coach next year. A: yes

2. the players and I are close and building

why, these smack of desperation, the club looks bad if we assured him and, players leaving if I go

the truth is players are going to go anyway if we keep serving up shit. The message to Dew needs to be finals or pack your bags, you’ve had enough time

I also don’t buy this talk about getting new assistants around him. He handpicked them all.

I have no doubt the club, including Coch want him and have told him so.
It’s just this constant media noise (others than just Caro) saying that senior AFL officials want a proven experienced coach and are pressuring the Suns to move him on.
Who wins that battle?
Follow the money

CLARKSON AND THE GOLD COAST SUNS
The Gold Coast Suns excitement is believed to be reaching fever pitch at the growing prospect of securing Clarkson themselves.

The Suns’ executive are making changes behind the scenes with senior coach Stuart Dew’s tenure seriously precarious and the club crunching the numbers on a potential pay out.

Football boss Jon Haines appears to also be in the gun, with a possible exit as early as Tuesday.

A Gold Coast local is already in the Suns sights to take over as head of footy.

Clarkson has a link to the Suns through chief executive Mark Evans.

And the club has a lot to offer with AFL backing, an improving list with stars like Touk Miller, Ben King and Matt Rowell and the liveability of south east Queensland.

If Clarkson took a trip north he could write his own ticket, choose his own assistants and demand a pay cheque in the vicinity of $2m a year.

If there is one thing to take out of this. Haines is gone at least.

Club was always going to publicly support Dew until they get their successor over the line, and they have supported him. But he was gone 6 weeks ago, Haines longer before that.

I just couldn't get my head around the rookie coach going down the youngest list pathway again
It was like 2010-2014 never happened
I think the biggest issue facing the Club is player retention in 2022 and they would not have considered that was the case under the "surefire" plan where we would have been close to finals last year and playing finals this year
Now there will be panic and while Dew may pull it out of the fire next year it might be too late even if we made top 8 to hold onto our star 23yo's
They know if they can bring in Roos or Clarkson it's likely people will stay whatever
I mean....Rory ****ing Atkins FFS

But if we went the second or third time coach again it could've been a Rocket situation again. The best coaches probably still had jobs at other clubs. Dew was the right man for the job at the time.

I had and in a way still have no great problem with Dew
It's the combination of young coach with no senior A graders or senior director of football
