News Coaching Thread: The Hardwick Era

Hardwick is understood to be the Suns’ first choice to replace Stuart Dew. Hardwick cited burnout when leaving Richmond earlier this year and Edmund believes the Suns wanted to see for themselves.

“First of all, they had to go, they just had to go there for those wondering why Bob East and Mark Evans went there,” Edmund began on SEN’s Crunch Time.

“You’re not going to sign a guy to a five-year contract over Zoom or on a WhatsApp chat, you have to get in front of him.

“They had preliminary conversations remotely and Dimma said all the right things, but you’ve got to go there and you’ve got to look the guy in the eye, the guy who said, ‘I’m burnt out…’ you have to look him in the eye to make sure that what you’re saying marries up with what you’re seeing.

“Mark and Bob did that, they had a formal meeting in Cinque Terre, then they followed up with a more casual dinner…

“They were there Monday, they got back yesterday, the Gold Coast travelling party.”

Edmund now understands that the Suns are set to go all in on securing the triple-premiership coach.

“My information is the board gave them a set of criteria to work with in and around the conversation with Damien Hardwick and what they saw was what they hoped they would see, that is he’s hungry, he’s ready to go again.

“It now goes back to the Gold Coast board to what I would contend is to sort out the formalities, the finer details of what will be a five-year contract with the board in conjunction with his manager, Paul Connors.

“All the right things were said, all the right impressions were given.

“It’s a fait accompli he’s going to be the coach of the Gold Coast Suns.”

Despite not getting the win, I was impressed with King's coaching adjustments that got us back in the game after a poor start. That's after losing Touk on short notice. Feels different to visually see a coach make adjustments that turn a game. Not used to it at all.

I’m starting to think Dew had instructed the team not to show any aggression. I always wondered why we never stuck up for each other like we have in the last few weeks.

Seems that way. We've probably shown more aggression in the last three weeks than we ever did throughout Dew's entire tenure. You just can't let opposition physical dominate you like we saw under Dew.

AFL said no to marketing money
But negotiations going well.

Sounds like it's a done deal and they are just ironing out a few little things. I guess the big positive for us in terms of not getting the marketing allowance is that if we do secure Dimma then we know that we've done it without the AFL's help and opposition supporters can't use that against us.

And sounds like he is being fair and reasonable in negotiations. Not asking for the moon.

Interesting that we're eyeing off a move to land Brisbane's GM of Footy Danny Daly to serve as an assistant under Dimma. Daly has been Chris Fagan's right-hand man since before their rise up the ladder and I would assume is highly rated within AFL circles. Seems like he'd be a great addition to our club and this is what comes with securing a coach like Damien Hardwick.

Now how do we get Charlie Cameron 😬

Oh Great
So we’re well on our way to winning the post season again and ready for the usual outlandish claims of next level improvement in 10 list cloggers in the magical 6 weeks between Grand Final day and return to training
I’m soooooo excited
Meh just 3 games to go
Cue in the rack time eh

So many years
So much mediocrity
I know how Roy felt
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion... I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain... Time to die"

Wowzers

So do you think Damien Hardwick needs to rebuild? Go back to the draft?
