Coll v Ess v Carl who has the best kids 21 years and under?

I hope someone bookmarks this ridiculously stupid comment.

why, it is correct

Essendon/Carlton

Collingwood a distant third.

Collingwood are assembling a very mediocre list and lack class. Carlton's numerous high picks cannot be ignored and there would be something wrong with the system if they were not to get much better over the next few years. If they were to win a flag they certainly would not earn too much respect for it given their blatant tanking. I believe Essendon has a solid list that will be topped off nicely in this up and coming draft. Been bottom 5 for the past 4 years and have had our fair share of high picks. Can see Collingwood loitering around mid table without the capacity to be genuine premiership contenders.

You are kidding yourself, Essendon's young list is miles off Carlton, and a fair way behind Collingwood as well. No backup ruck, no class a grade midfielders, and older players proping up team to win a few games, been the same for 4 years and will continue for another 4. If Lloyd, Lucas and Fletcher start dropping off or Hille goes down next year Essendon will be in bottom 4 again, if not then 9-12.

Carlton:
Joe Anderson - Who?
Mark Austin - Who?
Clint Benjamin - Who?
Paul Bower - Hahaha
Steven Browne - Who?
Jake Edwards - Who?
David Ellard - Who?
Bryce Gibbs - Couldnt exaclty stuff a Number 1 pick.
Shaun Grigg - Not bad
Shaun Hampson - Potential
Lachlan Hill - Who?
Sam Jacobs - Dud
Aaron Joseph - Who?
Matthew Kreuzer - See Bryce Gibbs
Darren Pfieffer - Reject

1. Essendon
2. Carlton
3. Collingwood

Very strong argument there. I am totally convinced that Essendon are going to win 5 premierships in a row because you are smart enough to count from 1 - 3. You should be proud of yourself.:thumbsu:

The following all played on the weekend and are 21 or under:
A.Toovey
C.Dawes
D.Thomas
H.O'Brien
J.Anthony
J.McCarthy
M.Clarke
N.Brown
R.Cook
S.Pendlebury
T.Cloke
T.Goldsack

All of these players have shown somthing at AFL level (yes, even Toovey has shown a glimmer of hope as a shutdown player). 12 players there. Any team can wank on about how much potential their players for the future but half of our team RIGHT NOW is under 21 and will most likely be playing finals football. So go on about your Gumbleton's of the future who have shown absolutely jack squat at AFL level and just go on blind faith and a few U18 comp performances. Collingwood's youngsters are delivering, Carlton's youngsters are delivering (actually prasing Carlton makes me want to hurl but there youngsters are undoubtebly very very good), Essendon's youngsters..... well.... we'll have to wait and see.

Semantics alert:

21 years and under.

Being 21 years and a couple of months does not make you under 21. Guessing no-one else in here tried to sneak another year in under 12's?

Keep underrating us, it's okay :)

Just like how were a certainty for bottom two. As for no A Grade midfielders... We have an absolute abundance of young midfielders, who have shown enough that they will be more than capable at senior level.

This argument hardly matters either, a 22 year old is still considered young.

It's 21 AND under.

If you're 21 and 4 months, you're still 21.

This thread is about players that are 21 years of age AND under. Not just players under 21 years of age.

My thoughts exactly :thumbsu:

Why 21?
In the last 3 seasons, only Brisbane & Port Adelaide have produced more RS nominations than Collingwood. 2 Collingwood players have finished R/U in this award.
Barring a major slip up, Collingwood's youngsters will play in their 3rd Straight finals series, on the back of a Top 4 finish in 07.
Carlton & Essendon on the other hand have had less nominations & haven't played in 1 finals series between them.

Dale Thomas, Scott Pendlebury & Travis Cloke are all 21 or younger and are 3 potential A Graders. All 3 were rated in the top 50 players in the AFL by Sheehan.

Collingwood easily.

I am excited by the potential in Collingwood's young brigade but I do agree that just yet there is no classy leader who will galvanise the rest into something more than just a top eight or even top four side. Hopefully, there is a superstar mid or two in there.

Firstly: Rising star nominations are largely selected by whoever gets the most media exposure for the week.
Secondly: Sheehan has absolutely no idea if he rated those three in the top 50 players in the AFL.

Murphy, Gibbs and Kruezer look a very good trio. Wait another 2-3 years and BANG! Carlton fans are drooling already and so they should be.

I really like the look of Dawes and Brown for the pies... Cloke, Pendlebury, Clarke and Thomas are guns.

Essendon's kids need to stop getting injured! Good talent there. Ryder, Myers, Reimers, Lonergan and Neagle look very good.
Gumbleton, Dempsey and Hislop have shown glimpses.

All 3 teams have a lot to be excited about. I'll just leave it at that. :)

Say hello to the next Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury.

When I looked at his post in regards to other peoples opinions on this thread I thought, wow, he came from left field. but when i searched his posts in reference to Collingwood I realized that this guy is consistently pessimistic. Thanks for the other posters responding with both eyes open. I believe all three have exiting young players which makes this thread great. Even better for me, I believe Collingwood has the best of the three. :thumbsu:

A B&F in a Top 4 side puts Cloke there.
Pendlebury is also the only 1 player at the 3 clubs (who is 21 and younger) that was selected in the HOF game. He was voted 3rd best for Victoria.

Oh yeah the "what if's".

While we're doing "what if's", what if Gumbleton has an injury free season? or for that matter Dempsey, Neagle, Houli and Davey?

Paradoxically this recognition holds enourmous credibility.

You obviously don't know Essendons youngsters very well... There may well be several A grade midfielders wearing red and black in the years ahead. You may well be surprised.

Obviously each of the respective clubs supporters are mostly putting their clubs kids at the top of the pack, and that is the trend of opinion here.. However, what I will say is that I don't know Collingwoods or Carltons entire list well enough to know how good or bad they are - they may well prove to be great teams.. However, I have a much deeper knowledge of Essendons youngsters and what I can say is that Essendon's midfield will be very well served in the years ahead by a combination of; Watson, Stanton, Lovett, Jetta, Monfries, Winderlich, Houli, Myers, Dempsey and Lonegan. Even Davey and Reimers may well float in and out of the midfield for short stints. What we will see is a very fast midfield supported by possession gatherers Watson, Stanton and Lonegan who will offload to the speed of the other names above. It will be a very potent midfield in 4 years time.

The forward line will be interesting. Don't rule Paddy Ryder out of being the next great CHF at Essendon. Whilst he did not take all his marks last weekend Vs Adelaide, he showed he has an enormous leap, can take a spectacular mark and kicks well. Knights is now experimenting - as was the case with Ryder last week, he wants to know if Ryder will be a greater CHF than the already great prospect that he would certainly be at CHB. Gumbleton and Neagle are obvious choices for the other KP forward / back.

Essendon will be looking to either draft - or trade for another ruckman or key backmen. Maybe even a talented KP from the west may find his way back to Victoria!

Don't know how good Carlton or Collingwoods youngsters are - don't study them closely enought, however, Essendon will be a very good side in 3 - 4 years...

Haha! Look at us all. It's like when you enter the door of this topic you must collect your complimentary rose coloured goggles.

Why does it have to be glasses tinted red?

Surely it's simple in black and white
 True that!
Anyhow, make peace.. one thing we can all agree on is that we should all be tuning into channel 7 for Australia V USA in Basketball!

Essendon with 18, Pies with 16, Blues with 15.

Gibbs the pick of the bunch of all 3 clubs, ahead of Pendlebury and Ryder respectively. Really happy with how Bower, Grigg and Kreuzer are practically starting 22 players now. Browne's a decent depth player, who you know what you'll get week in, week out.

Hampson is the one I'm most excited about potential wise, if only for some of the stuff he does that just screams smart player, which for a bloke who's only been playing AFL for 3-4 years is great. Austin is someone who's obviously being groomed for a key defensive role, and could go either way.

Really disappointed in Anderson and Edwards. Plenty of time to see more from Pfieffer, Ellard and Joseph. Don't expect to see Jacobs or Benjamin on the list next year, and haven't heard much about Hill.

For Essendon - certainly a lot to be excited about, it's a core to a side that you have a lot to look forward to. Ryder could be anything. I love Remier's attack on the footy, and would have hoped to seen more of the same from Hislop this season. Jetta and Houli have a lot to offer and are also best-22 quality. Dempsey and Gumbleton could be in a similiar boat if he could go 2 weeks without getting injured. Scary prospects really.

Collingwood - Pendlebury obviously the standout, Brown scarily good for his age, Clarke also a handy performer. McCarthy I reckon could be better than all 3. If Dawes and Anthony continue with the way they've started, then it's a non-event.

Collingwood get the most out of their youngsters, Essendon have built a good 22 around them, and Carlton have the best individual young player of the lot.

Fair enough?

Perhaps the most reasonable and thoughtout post this thread will get - unfortunately

why, it is correct

If Essendon's young list is "miles" off Carlton and Collingwood for that matter, how/why did we smash Carlton twice, and most recently Collingwood by 8 goals?

Collingwood and Carlton have had no where near the injuries Essendon has had to carry this season yet Carlton are just one game on top of Essendon and Collingwood not much further infront.

Essendon have added Reimers, Houli, Lonergan, Jetta and Neagle as definite best-22 players for this season and beyond - next year there will be many more young players staking their claim for a best-22 position (Myers, Gumbleton, and Dempsey just to name a few)

We do not rely on Lucas, Lloyd and Fletcher as heavily as before - Lucas has been injured for over half the season and hasn't been great when playing, Fletcher has been well below his best (Ryder has actually taken the mantle of #1 defender) and Lloyd was well down early, before enjoying a form resurgence.

Collingwood's youngsters are in front because of the fact that they have played more games than their counterparts and are thus further ahead in their development. Your RS nominations have been skewed higher due to the fact that Pendlebury and Thomas are top 5 picks.

When you compare Essendon's nominations this year (Houli and Reimers; picks 42 and 47 respectively), Essendon have managed to make the most of their later picks with both players looking very promising.

I have no doubt that once Essendon's young players get more exposure at the highest level, they will easily surprise many opposition supporters.
