Great pick South of the Yarra! I was hoping he'd be there for me. I really need to make my next two picks count, as I don't get back on the board until in the 40's.

With pick 21, I select Des Tuddenham for my centre position. Tough as nails, great leader.
Great selection. I was tossing up between him and Muzza

Damn, I really thought one of Todd, Lee, Moore and Regan would slip and I’d be able to swoop in and claim them with my pick and set up my spine.

With those options off the table, I think I’ll persist with the 1990 Premiership theme and take Darren Millane. Probably a slight reach but there’s no better winger to ever pull on a Collingwood guernsey.
If it wasn’t for strategy! I would have picked him well before pick 18. One of the all time greats without a shadow of a doubt.

I'll take Bob Rose with pick 7.

151 games, 4 Copeland trophies, 1953 premiership, TOTC centre and the most courageous player award named in his honour. Lacks the longevity of other champions, but his impact was just as great imo. Was the driving force that propelled Collingwood back to the top after the bleak decade of the 40s. An inspiring leader you can build a team around.

Thankyou.....for an excellent choice!

When the great man Peter Daicos burst onto the scene in the late 70s and early 80s those old diehard supporters around me said this kid reminds us of Fothergill. The man they called the magician, maestro or ‘wunderkind’. Could play in the middle or on a HFF. Incredibly kicked 50 or more goals 5 years in a row including 15 goals in 3 Finals in 1938. He won a Brownlow, Team of the Century, 3 x Copelands, was our leading goal kicker 3 times and the league leading goal kicker in 1946. Only war, injury and the lure of the VFA stopped him becoming our greatest player ever. Pretty happy he slipped to pick 20. To compliment the hardness and brilliance of Albert Collier I pick the genius DES FOTHERGILL on the HFF with selection 20.

Dang it! Was hoping one of the Des' would somehow fall. Might have been a tad ambitious

Nathan Buckley at 5 and Scott Pendlebury at 10. Hmmm.

Knightmare, I'm interested to know what you mean with the "Hmmm"?! Are you suggesting that both should have been rated higher (lower!), or simply that the gap between the two is too large?

FWIW, when I rate our all-time great players I'd say Buckley at 5 and Pendlebury at 10 would be pretty close to where I'd have them. I really like the fact that the OP said this (in a later post): "Pick a best 18 that tries to be as true as possible to the position/s that the player made his name in. Within reason of course, no problems putting a Steele Sidebottom in a forward pocket, bit dicey if Jarryd Blair is lining up in the ruck though. Every player picked is judged against his contemporaries, not how they would perform in today’s game. Syd Coventry’s height in regards to modern ruckman is irrelevant, he was a champion ruckman in the 20s and 30s and is judged on that." I too think it's important in an exercise like this that you ignore the fact that players like Dick Lee, Albert Collier and even Gordon Coventry were not big enough (for today's game) in the position they excelled in in their heyday.

I'd say the posters/players have followed that quite well, though the mighty Dick Lee (the League's "most dominant all-time leading goalkicker") and Jack Regan (who just had to be the AFL's TotC full-back!) have probably been somewhat undervalued! In Lee's case, it's probably forgivable, as even Collingwood FC could only find a spot for him on the forward flank in our Team of the Century!

Anyway, I really am enjoying this thread, and think the more attention given to our club's fantastic history the better!! Well done again to the OP, and to the posters who are making it such an entertaining read.

I reckon he thinks as they are regarded as the two best of all-time (or generally the discussion) why they went too low. The thing is we're not picking a best of list, we're picking a best 22, so positions have to come into account, hence a ruck, key forward and key back going in the first three picks.

Yeah, I love this thread too. The first 20 selections is a little like shooting fish in a barrell though - the latter rounds are going to be really interesting.

If I had to pick, I think half back flank has done pretty strongly so far getting Rose and Todd with their first two.

It’s the synergy of their number draft number matching their jumper numbers?
That's very likely to be the answer. Nice work! I did think of the jumper number 'connection' when Pendlebury was chosen in this 'draft', but didn't even consider it when I read Knightmare 's post!

Nathan Buckley was #5 and Scott Pendlebury is #10. Quirky it worked out that way for this draft. I was more-so wondering if I was the only one who noticed it. Stuck out like a sore thumb as soon as I saw the list.

What's crazy to me is how often the older generations changed numbers. I get it for captaincy, but take Gordon Coventry: he wore #3, #5, #6, #7, #8, #9, #10, #22 and #29 over his career! Imagine Buddy Franklin changing his jumper number every other year :p

The potential for cash generation with fans wanting to keep current would be huge if done today. Albeit it would annoy a lot of people at the same time.

Back then I think they awarded the numbers alphabetically, so players would shift around as the list changed.
