The AFL fund the Northern Academies.
The clubs run them and the clubs keep the best players.

Dispite this the AFL decided that NGA's needed to be capped at not matchable up to Pick 40 (after IQ and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan) backlash.

NGA's were first introduced in 2017, a key objective of the NGAs is to increase the talent pool of Indigenous and multicultural players. After 7 years of NGA and NA there was only one indigenous player drafted in 2024 dispite six Northern Academy players being picked up (Lombard, Marshall, Gallop, Cochran, Bell, Smith) and four Next Generation Academy players (Kako, Andrew, Anderson, Hoffmann).
One indigenous player, Cody Anderson, picked up after 7 years of suposed development to increase the indigenous talent pool is embarrassing.

Things will change now that NGA aren't restricted access for post 40 picks anymore.

When they first brought the NGa in, it was unrestricted access, but they weren't really academies. They were just names on a list of kids who played footy and qualified.

Now that it's gone back to full access and WA and SA clubs have most of their states, which they didn't when it was originally full access, things will change. WCE will spend a bomb on their academy - they get priority access to every 2nd Aboriginal kid from WA. Their academy will become really strong - Aboriginal draftees will start rolling in.

How did Tommy train today ?

They basically had him and Riley on light duties. Tommy spent a decent half hour focusing on tackling drills with a trainer. He provided the kick in to the 1v1 drills they did. Also did some light drills but otherwise they pulled the kids out for the major match play parts.

He’ll be back in January

Thanks to Half Back Pocket who posted the U16 training squad for Oakleigh

We have 6 FS/NGA prospects in this U16 squad ( 6 for 2027. Plus 1 as a 14 year old (2010 born, for 2028 - Joshua Thomas)

Ted Fraser (193cm)
Luke De Valle - 174cm
Tjaegen Egan - 181cm
Cooper Brancatisano - 183cm
Jalen Gorey - 174cm
Eli Kravic - 187cm

Will be interesting how many get into the final squad later in the pre-season.

Eli starting his pre-season with oakleigh well.

Jen2310 Eli kicked 4 at FF and looked strong and energetic despite the conditions. Is starting to get a fair bit of arrogance (in a good way) about him.
