The AFL fund the Northern Academies.
The clubs run them and the clubs keep the best players.
Dispite this the AFL decided that NGA's needed to be capped at not matchable up to Pick 40 (after IQ and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan) backlash.
NGA's were first introduced in 2017, a key objective of the NGAs is to increase the talent pool of Indigenous and multicultural players. After 7 years of NGA and NA there was only one indigenous player drafted in 2024 dispite six Northern Academy players being picked up (Lombard, Marshall, Gallop, Cochran, Bell, Smith) and four Next Generation Academy players (Kako, Andrew, Anderson, Hoffmann).
One indigenous player, Cody Anderson, picked up after 7 years of suposed development to increase the indigenous talent pool is embarrassing.
