True. Time will tell. We might look back and think that Korda was seriously underrated as president. McRae appears to have been an excellent appointment and his roll out of the Do Better report was impressive. Wright also came on board following Eddie’s exit (which were rumoured to be linked).

Best thing Ed did was bring Wright in before leaving. I believe he appointed him before he left.

I think you are right, but the rumour was that Wright didn’t want to come back to Collingwood if Eddie stayed on as president, and only signed after Eddie announced he would resign at the end of the year. Didn’t like his leadership style.

Ned is eminently qualified for the position, so that's not the issue.
It's whether his management style and the fact that his son is at the club as a player become problematic.

Craig Kelly may be very clever and competent, but he is also a head-kicker. He has run his own show for years, and now he is near the top of an organisation which is trying to become more consultative and inclusive.

I have seen Kelly speak at a couple of forums over the years, and he is aggressive and dismissive to those who express a different view.

Is he what we need?

Richmond just won three flags with a modest and consultative president, and a CEO who worked closely to maintain the culture that she championed.

There are different ways to run footy clubs, and we have been turning in the right direction. I hope this is not a backwards move.

Most good CEOs will have the head-kicker trait, they need it because some situations call for it. It’s knowing when to use it and when not to that’s the key. Listening to him on Dwayne’s show on SEN he acknowledged that running a club was different to running other types of business. He also was under no illusions that if he stepped out of his lane Graeme Wright (who is also no shrinking violet) would put him back there quick smart.

I mean, on top of the stuff you just said, there's other stuff I won't go into publicly here.

I hope he does well and all, but yeah, I just...I hope he's not the same person he once was and has grown somewhat.

True, so far some of the appointments in recent years do so far seem to be astute …

… but this is the first appointment under the current President.

New Collingwood chief executive Craig Kelly has refuted any suggestions he will have a conflict of interest in his new role as he outlined his intention to turn the Magpies into a “juggernaut”.
In a major coup for new Pies boss Jeff Browne, the Magpies unveiled the 1990 premiership defender and powerful player agentas its new CEO on Monday after Kelly walked away from his management empire TLA to take charge of his former club.

Kelly, 56, sold his controlling stake in his company which manages hundreds of AFL players and several coaches three years ago, and the club does not believe Monday’s appointment constitutes a conflict of interest.

As a result of his new position at Collingwood, Kelly has stepped down from all TLA executive and board positions.

Kelly said he felt privileged to return to his former club after the Magpies made an unlikely preliminary final under new coach Craig McRae in 2022.

“Social media needs to understand this – I do not manage players, there is no conflict,” Kelly said on SEN.

“I manage a couple of coaches. I’ve resigned, I now work for the Collingwood Football Club and I’m paid by the Collingwood Football Club.

“I’ll be doing everything I can to make that club successful, aligned and a juggernaut in the industry, that’s what we want it to be.”
Kelly pointed to Geelong, in particular, as an example of the whole-club alignment the Magpies needed to strive for.

“In good-run joint ... there is a benchmark there. Geelong have done exceptionally well in the last 12 months getting everything aligned,” Kelly said.

“I personally believe that unless you get it all aligned, unless you look at it and you have everyone playing their position like you have in a successful team, the footy gods don’t give you the end goal that you want.

“I think Sydney Swans, Geelong, Richmond, they are benchmarks and we have got to want to get to that whole level across our whole business, not just the footy department.”

Not sure about you being not sure about a bloke whose background makes him eminently qualified, even over-qualified, for the job - before he has started.

He is objectively a fantastic get. Might be an idea to let him get his feet under the desk.
