You know, earlier in the year I was at a best mate's birthday where one of the guests was someone who works with Collingwood in their role.

He mentioned to me that he was friends with one of the young players at the Club (won't name the player) who said that the young players in particular at Collingwood really didn't like Buckley because of how they were treated by him.

Just watched this on YouTube (very funny) and timestamped a moment where De Goey most likely unknowingly basically confirms why the kids at Collingwood really didn't like Bucks...

I got the sense Ginni wasn't a fan. He talks about how "Bucks never really coached me" and Ginni only came out of his shell after Bucks left. He probably wouldn't be the player he is today if Bucks was around.

It's pretty obvious that Bucks is a bit campaigner to deal with, when Bruzzy, one of his biggest fans, openly says in interviews that the environment is happier and more positive with the new coaching regime.

Bucks had extremely high standards for his teammates/players and the enforcement of those standards may not suit everybody, hence why he runs people the wrong way.

Oh that too. Could of also been the part where he says he wouldnt thrive in an uptight environment. Haha. The admiration for Pendles from both Jordy and Titch in this was noticeable too

I didn’t know where to place this post.
But I would like to pass on to the Collingwood Football Club, and all the Collingwood family, my sincere admiration for the Club’s efforts in reconciliation with our First Nations community.
It takes leadership and courage to address past wrongs.
And the Collingwood family has shown they have this in spades.
The pre-game ceremony on Sunday, and the ceremony at Victoria Park tonight, should make you very proud.
Your captain’s words tonight were heartfelt and welcome.
Football can separate us, but also bring us together.
Again, my congratulations.

I really feel that the Do Better Report has actually led to positive change and good will come out of it.

Watching the events unfold from the other side of the world, I was very moved by the pre-match ceremony, the "Unveiling an Icon" documentary piece on AFL.com.au, and the news piece from the Victoria Park healing ceremony. There is much I would love to discuss on the subject, at its core, but the one point I wanted to offer up is that your little corner of the world has given this planet a beam of light, of hope, for other nations and, in particular, my country, to step up, be the hero of today, by taking the necessary steps to make right the sins of the past against their ancestors.

Football is an avenue to bridge the difference in skin color. If we sit down, together, and talk with each other, imagine the many untraveled paths which can be walked, together, for the benefit of everyone.

Nothing worth striving for is easy. This is not easy. What took place was NOT EASY! But if a fanatical 54-year-old American Collingwood barracker (since first watching the game at age 14) was moved by what transpired, wouldn't you consider this something worth fighting for?

Peace from the USA!

That's a truly wonderful post. You haven't exactly been a prolific poster, but I'm sure plenty of us on here would like to hear more from you!

Nicky Winmar is the star of last night's show, and his willingness to revisit and reconcile the past is magnificent.

I'm not anti-Lumumba. Some people like to dwell on the man, whereas I just think we need to move on and 'do better' without him.

I've become concerned that Heritier thinks he is the final piece of some sort of puzzle, that we'll never solve the problems of the past and future until we've brought him back into the tent.

Time will tell, I suppose. I'll be happy so long as our club keeps moving in the right direction.

I really feel that the Do Better Report has actually led to positive change and good will come out of it.

Back when the report was leaked, not very many saw it that way. Ed being forced to stand down over “Proud day for our footy club …” is evidence of that. Ed got way way ahead of himself.

He just ****ed up on the framing of it. All he needed to do was go a bit harder.

“Proud day for the club because it takes courage to shine a light on the mistakes of the past”.

“Proud day for the club because today is a landmark, as the first day of committing towards being a completely inclusive and welcoming club for people of all races, religions, cultures etc. etc.”

He didn’t follow through which made it look like a gaffe. He was like Bill Gates shuffling from one foot to the other and giving a half-hearted clap at the Microsoft Windows launch party. It was a go hard or go home situation.

I agree with this. Eddie got the language all wrong that day, and when he was attacked for it, he lost his nerve and didn’t or couldn’t respond in a way which might have calmed it all down.

It was time for him to go anyway.

Hi all

I was there 30 years ago and I was there last night. It was a moving and necessary ceremony.

It was a mark of solidarity of all to attend, including Heretier. Say what you will about Heretier, but having a go at him about last night is extremely wide of the mark.

Im not going to wade into the detail of arguing the case and peoples various opinions of Heretier, but as someone who was there last night, you can take it as fact that if you want to have a go at H, this isnt the hill to fight on. It was an amazing ceremony and respected by all.

Dont fall for the divisive red herrings of social media and the media spin. All of us in this country is in this together, one way or another.

Cheers

Yes, I guess I didn't see it that way...he did attend, which is a step in the right direction & was a sign of respect. Probably all a bit awkward for Browne & Heritier, tbh. If Browne didn't try to speak to Heritier, that would be reported negatively...and then when he did, that's also reported negatively too...

At the end of the day, the way Nicky Winmar & the club have commemorated this historical moment has been healing & respectful.

Nicky Winmar way more important in all of this than HL - compare Winmar's behaviour to HL's - focus on that growth and healing vs the other

I was there 30 years ago on the wing where it all happened. I was 18, naïve and pretty shocked with some of the stuff I heard. What Gil and Nicky experienced that day was awful. It was a different time and lets face it the main reason they copped it was because they absolutely tore us to bits, some of our supporters could not take it and the weak option was to abuse them because of their skin colour.

While things are still not perfect we have come along way. I reckon a couple of hundred people would have been banned for life that day by todays standards. These days we might get one a month who go that far. It would be better if there were none and hopefully we get that day.

Well done to the club and well done to our skipper who continues to carry himself with exceptional grace.

*On a side note other thank the awful racism and the fact we lost that was one hell of a game. I reckon the standard was up there with the best I've seen. If you get a chance look at the highlights and you will see how bloody good those 2 St Kilda Champs were.
