There was some murmurs about us being interested in Aarts. Would be a nothing pick, but probably worthwhile.

I reckon McRae and Leppitsch would recognise the importance of building decent depth. Even if they are only break in case of emergency players.

I wouldn’t mind going for Sydney Stack for the same reason.

Our depth is still pretty bad at the moment beyond the top 24 or so players.
Stack I’d consider, we just got rid of Cal Brown don’t think we need to add a similar type in Aarts.

Who answered it?

It wouldn't surprise me if you were right and they hadn't worded things very well. But let's just say it does go down the free agency route and Collingwood match but insist on clauses that he doesn't want to sign on to- won't he be able to not sign and just nominate for the draft - stipulating a standard contract. Thus rendering our matching pointless. We can't force behavioural clauses on him through the matching process - he either agrees to them, we change them or he plays somewhere else next year.
It was two days ago. I can't remember who answered but there was a good comment and it came from the AFL's website.

It does, though. Matching is only concerned with financial terms. It's been asked on Reddit, too.
No. It concerns periods terms, $ and conditions.
Can’t match a $1m offer by saying that we will pay you exactly that as well, but the condition is you win the Brownlow, Copeland, Norm Smith and the AFL players award…, and you must be good.

I'm cautious of Stack. He needs the right environment to thrive. Could be a Stengle (who has thrived from having Eddie Betts as a mentor) or could be a bust.

But I think everyone is missing the point.. Cameron & Danger WANTED to change clubs, so even if the offers were matched, they still wanted to go, so a trade was organised.
DeGoey DOESN’T want to go, so if the offer from another club (without behaviour clauses) is matched by the Pies, there is no trade.. DeGoey signs the contract and stays. If not, he leaves as a free agent, and we get whatever the AFL give us as compo..

Correct - which means we get really nothing for him if we take McStay. If this were to eventuate we woule likely need to trade for McStay so we at least get some compensation. But the reality is if we match the Saints offer he would stay at the Pies. Quite the conundrum the club is facing

No - the afl rules specify the matching elements- length, base payments, match payments, additional services, individual incentives.

By not referencing any other elements/terms, the matching is limited to the above.

However, I imagine that if we were to seek to match but with behavioural clauses included, it would be pretty simple to apply to the General Counsel to determine that the offers aren’t “matched” in reality. AFL rules allow for various discretions to be exercised by the GC. This would likely be one of those times.

There's a lot of stereotyping around indigenous players in here. Gotta stop comparing every single indigenous player to Shai Bolton.

Happens in every sport for minority groups. Every indigenous player we have will always cause Leon to be brought up. Every white player in the NBA is only compared to other white players regardless of the differences in playstyle etc. Nothing malicious but hilariously predictable.

Very predictable with game style, but it becomes destructive when there's judgements on players ability or willingness to dedicate to their professions.

We won’t be giving up a first for Mitchell, everyone chill. And if we do, it will be pick swaps with minimal overall points change.
Give yourself an uppercut for mentioning points in a scenario where they’re irrelevant.

Ryan Collier Dawkins has shown a bit as a midfielder, feel like we could get him cheap

Travis Varcoe managed to avoid this tbf.

Surprised there hasn't been more media scrutiny over the fact that the AFL generously changed trading rules to assist with salary dumps, what... literally the day before it came out that GCS were offering Bowes and 7 for anyone who'd take on his own salary? What a leg up in order to shed salary and stay within the cap.

If GWS are asking any more than a 3rd rounders we should just take Narkle for free. Similar stats but Narkle averaged half the amount of game time.

Can't be handing over higher picks than the ones that got Lipinski or Kreuger

By what metric has he showed a bit? He only managed 2 senior games this year in a Richmond side that was hit by constant injuries and was crying out for a big bodied mid.

Lol wtf? They don't play similar at all.

Cameron constantly maintained that his preference was to stay at GWS but they lowballed him. Once he made the decision to accept Geelong’s offer, he kept his word to them, because that’s what people do. Once a player commits to a move, they don’t pull out of that commitment even with a matched offer, it just doesn’t happen.
You could be right but I think that may have been a bit of lip service by Cameron.

I did read it was very much a lifestyle decision for him and he took up to $200k less than other clubs may have been prepared to pay him.

Good summary. Not everyone is missing the point.
