Wouldn't be against picking up a bargain price ruck-forward to aid in an emergency, like we faced when Cox and Cameron were both injured, and McStay was exposed. Not sure what the go is with Levi Casboult and his family's plan for life beyond footy, but if they wanted to come back to Victoria, he'd be an option while we're in contention. He'd chop out Steene in the VFL without stifling Steene's development and be ready to be called upon if we ever needed a forward or ruck in the firsts.

I’m happy to back Steene in. Will be 20 in August and have another full preseason under his belt going into 2024.

I’m also more optimistic about Begg than others seem to be. His improvement has been really solid imho.

Add Cox and Cameron and the likelihood all of them would be unavailable at the 1 time as they were this year is extremely remote. Then you’ve got Frampton and McStay if needed.

You want to get a 34 yo (before start of next season) to relocate from another state and you think it would be cheap?
And you want this older player to be Levi Casboult?

Begg's a very hard no for me. Has only looked like a VFL standard ruck when he's gone up against the worst rucks (like Schache last week), and he simply won't make it as a KPP. Even Tom Downie from Williamstown took him and Steene to town.

Steene will get a new deal and I like his potential, but I wouldn't expect him to be near AFL standard for some time

Casboult hasn't made a 14 year career out of being a useless potato. He had a career best year for Gold Coast at 32 last year, age has not stifled the way he plays. Strong contested marking big men who hit the scoreboard and fill depth in multiple positions at once are very valuable.

Fair point about him not wanting to move interstate for a one-year low salary deal though. He'd probably retire instead or stay at the Suns.

Steene, yes. He's a great player and we're starting to see that in the VFL. Hine admitted he would have been ready had we really needed him but they wanted to wait.

Begg, no. Part of his problem is that he's too skinny. He's more of a KPD than a ruck. Modern rucks seem to be units and Begg in comparison is more twiggy and nimble.

They've only one AFL standard one, haven't though? I don't watch them often, but anyone other than Lewis?
Riccardi should be one we target. Unpopular opinion, but he's better than Johnson and I'd rather him.

Dylan Moore is at AFL standard ... but after that there's not much depth.

I'd be loathe to 'blame Sidebottom.' He ended up getting burnt by Beams too.
As a whole, everyone at the club

But I feel making that trade taught us a lot about who we trade for. Beams could have won the 2019 flag with us. He made a choice to jeopardise the team. There is an element - a slight element - of mental health. But I also think he could have taken more steps to ensure those problems didn't get out of hand, which they most certainly did.

That said, he could want to move to have a shot at a flag. I can't imagine Gold Coast will be a serious contender next year whereas he would get that shot at the Pies. Rather than target a veteran, a kid would be a wiser move, especially if we lose Bianco and Ruscoe.

We might not agree on Ollie Henry but I’m with you on Begg.
I think he’s got huge upside.

Begg is heavier than Finlayson at PA who regularly relieves in the Ruck.

Think the key part of that is relieves in the ruck and has another position. Begg seems to play almost exclusively ruck and sometimes, only sometimes, defence. If there's a ruckman I'd be pursuing in the comp, it's Kieren Briggs at GWS, who is statistically better than Cameron and Cox. Very underrated player.
